expanding the horizon yet again
I don't even know what to say about this except to try to connect it with [info]julad's and my attempt to classify and categorize postmodern fan fiction in the last post...where would it go? and is it even fanfic? it certainly is metameta *g*

[info]greenet is creating a fictional verse based on rps...it looks like just about every web page...links, picture galleries, fanfic recs, bios,...except that the group is made up...i especially love the xovers with fps *g*...

thanks to [info]pop_tarts/[info]lisew for the link

I would say that if a group of people are writing in the same universe (I would use the word 'verse' only if it's all poetry based storytelling) then it's just a 21st Century slant on the storytelling tradition. See folklore, various groups of Victorians, the Lovecraft circle long-running roleplaying groups that keep the same characters for each campaign and so on.

yeah, that's true, but isn't it just a little odd--not to mention beautifully derivative--how she mimics fan culture?

No odder than say 'Northanger Abbey' as a parody of a particular fiction genre of the era or the roleplaying game 'Feng Shui' as a parody of a particular type of low buget martial arts movie.

but don't you think intertextuality as in na is slightly different than the crossing over of reality and fiction you achieve in mimicking/fictionalizing the real live community of rps which fictionalizes real people?

I don't do RPS for reasons I've already stated in my LJ several times.

So the site just strikes me as another interesting development of Original Fiction and fiction challenges.

well, not 'doing' rps and not theorizing about it are two different things...plus, considering that this community was the brainchild of several rps'ers, the description specifically emphasizes rps friendliness (as well as any number of other taboos...even if they squick me personally, i can still find them fascinating theoretically, right?)

but if you chose to see the project completely divorced from rps and rps communities, i can see how it wouldn't strike you as interesting in the least...

I don't find it disinteresting but I don't think it's anything new either.

Like my feelings about 'Original Slash'. Yes there are some original fics that obey slash conventions but there are also a lot of stories (including some using other people's characters) that don't follow those conventions and could quite easily be divorced from slash entirely if there were a category other than slash, gen or het (adult).

This reminds me of a site mentioned in Brian Attebery's new book Decoding Gender in Science Fiction (highly recommended). In his last chapter he talks about slash fiction, but also the different attempts by gay fans to "claim" a part of the Star Trek future, including the open letter to the producers which I've read about before. Another tactic is this site which mimics fan sites about the shows that did exist but is all about a made-up Star Trek series (PIONEERS) with a ship the U.S.S. Mandela (named after Nelson Mandela, according to the site info)

http://www.geocities.com/starfleetaf/ships/mandela.htm

Fascinating stuff though I'll be darned if I know where it "fits."

I've played in a couple of shared universes where people write fiction and it's a great idea. It builds the same sense of community and a waiting audience than fanfic has.

The faux band is a great idea that I thought about trying a while back with an *NSYNCalike boyband setup. I thought it would be a nice thing for people who liked the idea of popslash but were uncomfortable with the R aspect of RPS.

I thought of structuring it with an 'official' site with news items and tours and so on, and an 'unofficial' fan site for the fic archive , etc. The one thing that I spent a while thinking about were photos -- in the end I decided that the best thing to do would be to ask people if they had any friends who would be okay with being the visual templates for slash fic. I also toyed with the idea of holding a virtual 'pop idol' style thing to create the band characters in the first place, and maybe also the managers, family and other associated characters.

However, I don't actually care enough or know enough about the popslash fandoms to do it convincingly, or that I know enough popslash fans to try to build up a sufficient base of people to play in the world. It would take a lot of work to generate enough fic etc to make it realistic. It'll be intersting to see if this one grows or stalls out.

wow, this is something that'd have never crossed my mind, but apparently it's not that uncommon an idea...

as for it growing, i think the idea tends to be more interesting than its actual execution...then again, how many of us entered bbs without being able to distinguish joey from chris *g* ...for me, at least, it was always more about the stories and the women writing it than the guys...
