How long is too long for finger waves?
Hello! Yes I am also new here. :-)  I LOVE vintage hairstyles mostly 20's to 30's styles and Victorian era styles as well. I spent my whole life with LONG curly hair. I cut it short recently and have sadly discovered that there are not many vintage hairstyles that I could do with short hair.(My hair is not a few inches shy of reaching my shoulders. It's also super curly but very soft and managable.) I really like finger waves but have no idea how to do them I've searched online but the instructions are difficult to follow.

My ideal look would be Maria de Medeiros in the movie Henry and June

<<--- These are quite nice as well though I prefer the first one.

I was told that in order to do finger waves my hair had to be very very short but Maria's hair was very long in that film. How can I pull this off? Also what's the difference between pin curls and finger waves?

I just have to say that Maria de Medeiros is one of the most beautiful women I've seen. She's truly got that 1920s face and acts Anaïs Nin very well. As for you troubles with fingerwaves; I also thought the instructions on the internet were difficult, but practice makes perfect. I've tried out several different methods, and I'm just recently, after doing it five or ten times, getting the hang of it.

Somewhat OT: I feel kinda proud she's Portuguese as I am too. I also think she is just gorgeous.

Which method was most successful for you? Do have any recommendations for pomade or gel?

I use Wella setting fluid when setting the waves, but I don't like putting other products like pomade, gel and spray in my hair. I just found that soaking my hair with water, towel drying it slightly and then soaking it in setting fluid before making the waves with a comb and my hands worked best. Read many tutorials to find out what works best for you. I also put bobby pins in the creases of the wave when my hair won't stay put, but the best would probably be getting your hands on some good wave clips. Good luck!

I think that the problem doing fingerwaves on longer hair is that it gets weighed down more, and the waves are more likely to be pulled out. What I've done was to just pull it in to a bun/chignon/what-have-you in the back, and then wave it.

Hehe, that's me in the last picture :P
If you go here: http://www.wildilocks.com/treats/ the lady who did my hair actually made a video or two of it, narrating what she did.

Oh wow really? I actually saw that video. Though I think it's only helpful for stylists whose clients request that particular style. I want to learn how to do it on myself.

I hope you don't mind me using your picture ^_^; I thought your hair was lovely example.

The difference between pin curls and finger waves is that although both can be obtained with pins, finger waves are actually the bumpy waves that you have in most of the pictures in your post. Pin curls will result in actual curl curls. I know there were a few girls with long hair that did finger waves for various events and posted pictures, maybe they are in the memories, i know a lot of them pulled back their back hair in a low bun at the nape of their neck so from the front it looked they had shorter hair. I've seen a lot of period pictures where this seems to be the case since not every one ran out and cut their hair in the 20s but they still wanted to be fashionable. Hope that helped some.

Finger waves = setting hair in wave like directions.
pin curls = setting hair by ribboning hair around finger tip and then pinning it to ones head.

You obviously know what fingerwaves look like, but pincurls can also create a similar uniform wave-like look depending on how you take out the curls and how you brush them out.
So with pincurls you can do large defined waves or distinct pincurl curls.
Pincurls can also make the page-boy style.

most 40s style hair use both fingerwaving and pincurls in a hairstyle.

I've never done fingerwaves before, so all I can say do is wish you good luck! :)

so...pincurls and techniques - what are the various ways you take the curls out/brush them out to make what desired effect?

Well I've never actually done Pincurls before. My hair is already curly. The only experience I have with pins is making ringlets. I want to attempt a full-headed and very defined finger wave. ^o^

well, I find with my hair at least that undoing each curl and letting it drop, brushing it lightly (with a soft-medium bristled brush) creates individual pin curl curls (they are distinct because they aren't barrel curls).
But if you you take them all out, or row by row, shake out the curls a little (amuse yourself at the bounciness of your hair for a few minutes haha) and then brush your hair lightly with a bristle brush, the curls conjoin and look wavy.

But it takes experimenting and practicing and it depends on your hair. when my friend did pin curls, all she needed to do is shake out her curls and loosen them up with a comb and she'd be done! But that's because her hair is soft and thin. One time I tried to brush them all out at the same time, and I got so aggressive and frustrated that I ended up with mildly wavy hair, even though I had set it in pin curls the entire night... :(

you have to be pretty tidy with the curls, right? when you start looping them and pinning them, your hair shouldn't be all twisty, yeah? I got lazy once and my waves were all over the place so I had to pin some of my hair up to hide them. :(

yep, the best way to explain how it's done is to describe it as 'ribboning' the hair around your fingers. So it's like wrapping a ribbon around your fingers, you don't twist it around.

and although tags and history is helpful, it's nice to relay messages back and forth and have a conversation of sorts.

OMG sorry. like, totally.

I was just asking HER because she posted advice already, and I asked a question for elaboration regarding her quote "pincurls can also create a similar uniform wave-like look depending on how you take out the curls and how you brush them out."

you didn't have to answer it for me. :/
