I am doing research on breweries...believe it or not, PBR used to be the high end stuff. They, along with Schlitz and A-B survived Prohibition by selling malt for cooking (do you really want your bread to taste like hops? yeah, I didn't think so). In order to not be breaking the law by selling something that could be used to make alcohol, the companies printed these pretty elaborate cook books. Yes, some of the recipes might be good, but cooking with malt is not the same as with beer.

My mother used to make a lovely malt loaf using extract of malt.

I bet that was actually really yummy. She probably did not use the hop flavored though. I know there can be some good stuff made with malt, just not so much with the hop malt.

So cool. Thanks.

BTW malt extract is mostly just sugar so people do use it for baking, drinks, candy etc. Hops is an entirely separate plant that is added to the malted grain during the fermentation of the beer.

yes, but the difference is the appearance of hop flavored malt, which before Prohibition was hard to find and pretty much for home brewing.

No- don't tell me- let me guess- did sales of hop malt mysteriously rise during prohibition?

But the housewife in the second ad looks drunk, anyway.

well yes, of course she is! my favorite recipe is in the very back...it is for a hop based syrup, you know, to add in your hot chocolate and all ;)
