National League for Opposing Woman Suffrage, 1900

National League for Opposing Woman Suffrage, 1900
A man arrives home 'after a hard day's work' to find his children alone and sobbing. Pinned to a 'Votes for Women' poster is a note saying 'Back in an hour or so', written by the mother of the household who has gone off to a suffragette meeting. The implication is that campaigning for the vote meant that women neglected their families.

the art work on that is so modern in many ways. Also for the time the girls old enough I am surprised its not lamenting her lack of caretaking.

She should be home trying to give that man a SON, dammit. So far all he's got are two worthless daughters who won't even be able to vote when they grow up...

It's very disturbing to me that this looks as modern as it does. It really wasn't all that long ago in the scheme of things. And now we have a woman running for president. That's pretty tail kickin' progress.

WE had a woman prime minister in 1979. *sticks tongue out* :)

We're not exactly a progressive lot over here. Give us a couple more decades, maybe we'll be up to where you were in 1979. The trouble is that the the "Dumbass Party" members are seriously dragging us down. I keep hoping that they'll all either decide to secede or just stop voting for their choice of Idiot King.
Does that make me an optimist?

LOL, I'd like to think you guys have advanced enough to have a female president now. Either way this will very likely be a ground breaking election. But the question is... who is more respected: a black man or a white woman? We'll find out soon, I guess.

And now we have a woman running for president.

Women have been running for US Pres for a while now! Even before women got the vote, in fact! All I gotta say is that Victoria Woodhull musta had moxie right up to her eyeballs.

As if a mother's day at home isn't a "hard day's work" too.

Not to mention that the idea of a woman staying at home was very middle class, and that most poorer women had to work 16-hour days or what have you, and still be expected to tend to the little ones.

Mind you, those weren't the ones campaigning for suffrage during the day, either. I'm sure a lot of them would have liked to, but again it's a very middle class thing to be doing.

You mean completely distorting an issue and ignoring anything like a moral compass isn't a modern development?
;]

Nice art, though. Good colors, composition..

Now, I can't be expected to stay home and clothe, feed and care for my kids and darn those socks if I want to vote, can I? Can I?

A mother should stay home and help her kids achieve their day's quota of sweatshop piece work.

Man. I must be too North American or something. At first glance, I took the smoke from the wick of the oil lamp to be smoke from a gun hidden somewhere in the picture and he'd just shot both the children.

Those kids are wimpy. They just need to go to the McDonalds playground and they'll be just fine w/o mama.

I'm a woman voter and I've neglected my family. In fact, I neglected to have one at all. Who wants a bunch of whiners like this underfoot?
