Behold, a blatantly vaginophallic product mascot!
Complete with genital pubic hair, er, I mean "chin stubble".

To this day, I still wonder what it is about our culture that allows the tobacco industry to stay in business. I mean, think about it. Even beyond this blatantly horrible ad.

They sell a product that causes cancer.
They sell a product that causes cancer.
They sell a product that causes cancer.
They sell..a product... that causes.. cancer.
They sell a motherf*#@ing product that causes CANCER.

*sigh*.

"They sell a product that causes cancer."

I could make an argument here about how there are other products out there that are unsafe, and it would be right. But I think there's a more fundamental point: they sell a product that causes cancer, yes... they legally sell it to adults, who presumably have the right to legally choose what to do with their own lives and bodies.

If you don't like that, don't buy the product.

I don't like it and don't buy the product, yet I still have to breath the smoke from my downstairs neighbor--how is that fair? I don't care if he chooses to slowly kill himself, but I do care about how I have no choice in the matter. I have never been able to find an apartment that does not come with smoking neighbors no matter how hard I try.

the #1 cause of death in America is a heart attack, and the most common cause of a heart attack is plaque build up along the walls of the pulmonary arteries cause from eating fatty foods and dairy products, so maybe we should start by banning cheese, milk, butter, steak, pork, ham, etc. etc.

What scares me is that I've known several people who hated cigarette smoking with a passion, and stated that if they could they would make it illegal... and at the same time supported the legalization of medical marijuana, since the government shouldn't be able to force people who wanted to purchase it from doing so.

Oy.

We should really warn people about this. Put it on all the products and adverts and at the point of sales. Maybe an ad campaign or two - and let's make the cigarette companies fund it!

Nah, lets just all keep our head in that sand and ignore the 800 pound gorilla...

The way I see it is if you're stupid enough to spend unbelievable amounts of money to put carcinogenic SMOKE directly into you lungs, you're a shining example of the very definition of Darwinism. I say to anyone and everyone that wants to smoke, "LIGHT 'EM UP!" If your mind is that underdeveloped that a cartoon camel can convince you to do this, you're pretty much out of the running for your genetic material genuinely moving the human race forward. I can't imagine how much more fucked this planet would be if the millions of smoking pinheads that have offed themselves over the past several centuries remained alive and bred - there'd be a billion more people on a planet that's already overrun and can barely sustain itself to begin with...

But, I don't want to rant or anything about it...

Yeah, cancer bad, etc.

You're comparing apples and chainsaws.

To compare the detrimental effects of ABUSING alcohol habitually and for long periods with the detrimental effects of even being AROUND much less USING tobacco products is clearly intellectually dishonest. There is no valid comparison here.

This holds true as well for the other examples being cited, such as being in the sun. Apples and chainsaws.

The closest one would be smog, but last time I checked smog wasn't addictive, wasn't marketed, and wasn't sold.
Which is the entire point of the post; THEY'RE SELLING DEATH.

Tobacco is that harmful, and has no other function in this context than to addict its users so that tobacco companies can make money from their misery.

Someone else mentioned the World Health Organization's study on second hand smoke below, but this part bears repeating: they found NO evidence that living with a smoker increases your risk for lung cancer. Merely being around tobacco products has not been proven to have detrimental effects. Seriously.

I am not a cigarette defender. I grew up with two parents who smoke, and I spent a LOT of time lecturing them about second-hand smoke (they only ever smoked in their own room, but I was a mouthy little thing). I still hate being around people who are smoking, but I have to admit I was wrong. There's just no proof. You won't explode into a giant tumor if someone lights up around you.

Alcohol and tobacco both impact a lot of lives in many negative ways, so it's hardly fair to say that comparing the two is like comparing apples and chainsaws.

Please don't bring the government into regulating our freedoms. Pretty soon homosexuals won't be able to get married and women will won't have the right to choose what happens to their uterus....
oh. wait.

You know what - people would get really pissed if the government told them they couldn't drive Hummers, ride horses, go to a zoo, pick their nose, drink(we already tried that, look how well it worked out), purchase, get married(same sex).

Yes, they sell a product that causes cancer.

Lots of products cause cancer. It isn't just cigarettes. If people are willing to fight for their right to ingest something which could possibly harm them, and spend money on it, and defend it vehemently... why should it matter to you? It isn't like people don't know what they're putting into their body. It's not like it's some new thing, or something they try and hide. No one's making you smoke. And if people smoke around you when you don't want it, they're assholes and that has nothing to do with smoking. That has to do with people being assholes.

You seem to be getting a bad wrap for being anti-smoking corporations.
However, I hate to break it to you. But you are seriously stating the obvious, and when you do that on the internet, people tend to dogpile the offender. Yes it's shocking when you first discover the truth, but most adults already have formed solid opinions on the issue. Don't worry, you're not the only one who has thought about this extensively.

Anyway. I think it's appalling that there is such a corporation. There are corporations. It's not just cigarette companies that are guilty of this. You know that, don't you?

I've read everyone's replies to this and I am doing my best to not be angry about being called stupid, etc. because I smoke cigarettes.

Here is something you non-smokers need to understand. Cigarettes are physically ADDICTIVE - I've heard more so than heroin. That smoker in the apartment next to yours isn't trying to kill you, he is just living with his addiction. Most people start smoking before they are 21 because it is that age where you are spending the most time chasing a buzz - cigarettes, booze, pot, whatever. I started smoking because I liked the nicotine buzz, and after a few times I was addicted. That's how it works, no more buzz, just addiction.

Yes it is possible, but extremely hard, to quit. And not just because they are physically addictive, but they are mentally addictive as well. I know for me, my smokes are like little friends that go with me everywhere. And I share these friends with millions of other people, which gives me something in common with someone wherever I go. It's a social thing, any job you have you have an automatic in with at least one group of people. Any party you go to you have an automatic in with at least one group of people. It sounds silly but there is comfort in that, and I have made some life-long friends because of it.

I want to quit smoking. I really do. I know it isn't healthy, and it is expensive. But I am not smoking because I am too stupid to know it is bad for me! Come on, no one is. I smoke because I am addicted, that's it. I think if a lot of you would examine your lives you would find plenty of things you are addicted to - mentally or physically - that aren't healthy, or expensive... it's human nature.

And we are all a day closer to dying than we were yesterday, if we smoke or not!

I'm a fan of what Canada has done. It's illegal to smoke in a home with a child under the age of 19. I'm also pretty the same goes for cars, or they're moving towards cars.

But at the end of the day, it's all about freedom of choice. Lots of things cause cancer. Lots of things will a person. I'd be up for an attempted prohibition of cigarettes, but I don't think that would go over very well, so I don't waste my time trying to convince everyone that it would be a good thing.
