This is George. George is a 2 year old neutered male polydactal who came into my care Monday night. George has a very sweet nature and several extra toes -- he has 3 thumbs on his front right paw and 2 thumbs on his front left paw!! He is alert and very curious about his new surroundings, and he’s been a complete sweetheart, which is amazing considering his situation.
The good news is that he tested negative for Feline AIDS. The bad news is that he tested positve for feline leukemia, which means he needs a special home where he will be the only cat, or where the other cats in the home also have tested positve. In any case, he must be exclusively indoors.

George comes from a neglectful home. He was an unaltered indoor-outdoor male with no immunizations. Three weeks ago, he got into a fight with a raccoon that resulted in a compound fracture of one leg and several infected gouges. He received no veterinary care, and spent weeks getting sicker and weaker as the infection spread. Even though the wounds became so infected the owners believed he was dying of gangrene, they allowed him to suffer untreated. Finally, they stopped feeding him two days prior to surrendering him to us.

We took him to the vet Tuesday morning. Based on what I had been told of his condition, I was fairly certain we were taking him in to be put down. To my shock and relief, the vet said he could be saved with surgical cleanup and antibiotics. The worst of it was his left front foot, which was badly infected, and the positive test for feline leukemia.
They put him under and cleaned up his foot, neutered him, gave him a bath, treated him for fleas, and gave him injections of pain meds and antibiotics. He also received vaccinations for Rabies and FVRCCP. He will be getting liquid antibiotics twice a day for the next few days, and he has a followup appointment in a week.

George needs a home where he will be loved and appreciated. He would also benefit from a foster home in which he does not have to be separated from other cats. (I have cats and kittens who are not positive for feline leukemia, so I can’t let him run loose.) If you are interested in meeting George to adopt or foster, please email me at minirth @ gmail dot com, or comment here.
George's vet bills ran $399. If you or someone you know is interested in donating a few bucks to defray the cost, you can do so via the Paypal button below (or send via Paypal to lynxfeather @ yahoo dot com). Any help is deeply appreciated!
