Immediately, I began ironing so I could put them on and waited very impatiently for Jason to get home from work so I could have them photographed! Presenting.... Very special goth frillies made by Lady LaSalle. THEY ARE SO FREAKING BEAUTIFUL!!!!!!!!! I am wearing them now and have no plans to take them off. My new gown and hat Last week, I completed a black velvet and bengaline gown circa 1879. I will wear this ensemble to the public opening of The Museum at FIT's "Dark Glamour" exhibit on Friday. "An introductory gallery will focus on the origins of gothic style, which have inspired both designers and goths. The Victorian cult of mourning, for example, will be illustrated by actual mourning dresses, veils, and momento mori jewelry. The main gallery space will be designed as a labyrinth, featuring iconic themes such as Night, with black evening dresses; the Ruined Castle, with fashion inspired by gothic images of the Dark Ages, ruins, and fragments; and the Laboratory, where futuristic fashion "monsters" are created. Other themes include Veils and Masks, Mirrors, and the Haunted Palace – the last of which draws on Edgar Allan Poe’s architectural metaphor for a disturbed mind."On to the gown! The light/flash may make the trim, etc appear grey, but it is all jet black. ( MORE PICTURES HERE )Here's the mini top hat I made for the gown. It is a buckram base covered in black velvet and black bengaline, with a black grosgrain ribbon hat band. I'm going to ball this autumn dressed as a Victorian gentleman, and I have a few questions.
1) Where can I find more or less historically correct waistcoats online, preferably in funky patterns? And in smaller sizes, I'm a woman, and not a very big one at that.
2) Cravat or tie? I'm aiming for a sort of 1880/90's style. Where can I buy one relatively cheaply?
3) Any recommendations as to the hairstyle?
Thanks! | | Tuesday, July 1st, 2008 | 8:58 pm [jaborwhalky]

Who will make my clockwork Polonaise? So I have gathered up the Robert Kaufman fabrics, and a bunch of antique glass clockface buttons, and I would like to have a dress made for the Edwardian Ball in Los Angeles in the Fall. The pattern I want is Truly Victorian 410, 1873 Polonaise. here are my thoughts on this: I DO NOT CARE ABOUT HISTORICAL ACCURACY. This will be a steampunk, punkass, patchwork polonaise with many fabrics, crazy trim, etc. I actually want it to have leatherette straps across the bodice. I will NOT be wearing a corset under it, my natural shape is just fine thankyou! I am looking for someone to make this who has made a Polonaise before, at least once, someone who has no problem completing projects in a timely fashion and isn't so busy that scheduling will be a huge challenge. And it needs to be someone local if at all possible, because I'd really like to do a trade- a portrait for the dress!- it's more fun that way. But I am also open to paying for it. if you know anybody who might be interested, please forward them my info ! cross-posted to lots of places... | | Thursday, March 27th, 2008 | 9:36 am [slave1]

The Midsummer's Night Ball - a masquerade ball in Salisbury Your hosts, Oberon and Titania, cordially invite you to enter our magic hall with your best finery and indulge in mischief, glamour, and magic in historic Salisbury, a few miles from sacred Stonehenge. The ball is taking place on 20 June, 2008, Midsummer's eve, from 7:00pm till 1am. We truly wish to make this an evening for our guests to remember: be whisked away by a horse and carriage to the marble steps of the Salisbury guildhall, where the Oreo String Quartet will be playing music for the season in the Foyer. Fine wines and casked ales are being provided by Shipseys for your enjoyment. Puck and Attendant Faeries, courtesy of Firecat Masquerade, will be making an appearance to entertain our guests while DJ duo Sexbat and The Ingenue and DJ Andy Ravensable keep the trad-goth and industrial music going until the early hours. Photographer Dylan will take photos so you can have momentos of your special evening. Expect a surprise or two as well along the way, as this is a night when nothing is as it seems, and anything is possible! | | Saturday, February 23rd, 2008 | 1:50 am [lady_aranwen]

What is she building in there? Brass gears and cogs, boxes that sing...these are a few of my favorite things...
This charming brass and copper music box in the shape of a Victorian sewing machine plays the tune of "My Favorite Things" while brass gears turn round and round, the bobbin bobs, and the foot moves back and forth. Four large gears are visible, and the bobbin and drawer are accented with brass nuts. Wind-up key is located underneath the drawer. A brown band is included and can be replaced with any rubber band. The music of gears for steampunk ears, indeed! See other photos. Measures 14 cm wide, 15.5 cm tall, and 9 cm deep.

Hey folks, I'm wondering if anyone could answe a question for me. I googled a little bit and didn't quite find the information I was looking for.
What is the purpose of the bustle pad? Well, I mean, I know the *purpose* but is it in place of a cage? Why would you do that? Personal preference? Does it date to any particular years?
I'm very curious! |
