Can anybody get me the text of the Venusian lullaby Three sings to Agrador on Peladon? I'd love to have it for a Jo Grant story I'm working on. Thank you in advance.

Brigadier Three!

(I hope this is allowed here, as it's more about Jon Pertwee than Three. If not, I'm happy to delete.)

Last night my flatmates and I decided to watch an episode of The Avengers, and we randomly chose the first episode of Season 5, From Venus with Love.

About half way through, a character was mentioned who was a Brigadier, and we geeked happily about that. Then he appeared on screen, and [info]silly_cleo said, "You know, he sounds a lot like Three..."

Brigadier Pertwee! Screencaps under the cut. )

And it's an episode about Venus, no less! Clearly this is where he learned the Aikido and the lullaby. ;D

Atlanta Gallifreyans meeting this Saturday, June 21st, at 4:30 PM

I just wanted to remind everyone in the metro (and beyond) Atlanta area that the next meeting of the Atlanta Gallifreyans (Atlanta's own Doctor Who club) is tomorrow, Saturday June the 21st, starting at 4:30 PM at the Doraville Civic Center. (The civic center is within walking distance of the Doraville Marta station, and is a block or so away from the Buford Hiway and I-285 intersection. Directions at the AG site, below.)

Please bring one of the following: food or drink or plate and napkins and plastic cutlery with which to share with all, if you can. :)

We will be watching the last part of The Greatest Show in the Galaxy (time constraints kept us from watching all the way to to the end last month, alas). We're in the middle of watching a Seventh Doctor episode per meeting. Next up is Battlefield. We should be finished with McCoy by October at the latest, which means that we will be returning to the Third Doctor with The Three Doctors, just in time for the show's anniversary month in November! :)

The Tenth Doctor episodes that we should be watching include Silence in the Library, Forest of the Dead, and Midnight. If we are lucky, we will also be watching Turn Left! We are skipping The Wasp and the Unicorn for now, since it was just shown on the Sci-Fi Channel, so most everyone has had a chance to see it hopefully.

The site for the club is here:
http://www.atlantagallifreyans.org/
Directions are on the site.
Any further questions about the meeting, please ask here. :)

We have many other guests as well:

Dr. Kevin Grazier (science adviser for Battlestar Galactica and Eureka)

A tribute to the Third Doctor (and his era).

Cross-posted to my own journal and [info]greenbubblewrap ; segment about companions also posted at [info]loves_them_all .

At the end of series 3, I was inspired to go seeking out old school Master episodes. I sought out Terror of the Autons -- this being back when I had any interest in watching the show in order -- and couldn't find it, so I went for the next best thing: The Mind of Evil. And so that became my first foray into the world of classic Who, inspired by the prospect of our Lord and Master of All.

Within five minutes, the Third Doctor was casually and loudly insulting a prominent scientist's invention in front of him to a room full of observers during a demonstration, and from that moment on my eternal love was pledged to His Glory.

"Apparently, I am some sort of a galactic yo-yo!"
"Dealt with it? You've ruined it, you ham-fisted bun vender!"
"I am no sort of chap, sir!"
"Are you some kind of scientist?"/"I am every kind of scientist."
"Are you serious?"/"About what I do, yes. Not necessarily the way I do it."
"I have always been very keen on survival."
"What kept me?! Of all the confounded arrogance..."
(The Five Doctors, how I love thee.)

Flash forward, I just finished the last Three arc I had left, The Sea Devils.

And again, despite this instance of it, I really think Three is possibly the most merciful Doctor. He puts up a hell of a resistance against aggressive attacks of any sort. He repeatedly declares himself to be a champion of the cause of peace. His solutions are mostly likely to involve him barking about and then succeeding in pulling off a nerdy scientific solution, with less of a mix of him getting into the epic battles that other Doctors sometimes do. His manner of talking things out is the most diplomatic, due to its formality (Two rivals this because he's just so gentlemanly, though not as forceful). He does all this while being incredibly high-and-mighty and bitter about being trapped and surrounded by stupid people, which is possibly the best part.

Another good thing about Three are his elite brood of

Of course, the day wouldn't be complete without

Man, that took forever, and I didn't even use all of them. XD Should you want to snag any, let me know which so I can tell you who to credit. =D

So, there was my long silly tribute to stuff you already know. But I finished him and he deserves it! And there's just sooooo much that is wonderful about his period, there was no getting around that, dudes. It makes me feel a little bit better about having finished with The Venerable Three FOREVER and now having naught but lesser Doctors to comfort me. And don't even try to argue with me. You only have to have seen how totally Above All he acts all the time to understand how that is a totally unbiased statement.

Masterly articles from DWM 311 (crossposted)

I scanned in two extensive articles from DWM 311, the Master special from December 2001. One is a DWM Archive article that goes into great depth about Terror of the Autons, and a lot of it is about the Master's initial character development--basically, how the character was born, and what qualities the writers considered essential in his characterisation and the style with which he should be portrayed. Invaluable information for any Master fan, especially for fanfic research purposes, character analysis and all that. The second article is one about Roger Delgado, with all sorts of interesting stuff in--stage, movies, Who, and with wonderful anecdotes from the people who worked with him. Such a kind and gentle man, and such a great loss:(.

But, yeah, in general, lots of good stuff here. Not just Delgado stuff, but Jon Pertwee and Katy Manning as well. Also, wah, poor Nick Courtney. But overall it's happymaking and fascinating reading.

The scans aren't super-duper, and not cleaned up (sorry for the grit/cat hair/wrinkles), but I just focused on providing scans of the text rather than the pictures (and the articles are long, so it took quite a while to scan them in even without going into a big clean-up process). Other than that, let me know if I've buggered anything up (broken links and that sort of thing).

Enjoy!

What?

Since I do a lot of my old Who viewings via youtube, and am a masochist, I occasionally read the comments. Sometimes I come across flames about how Three was a lame Doctor (GRR) because he was too violent. Now, the fact that I never considered the Doctor to be a pacifist aside, that just makes no sense to me. His most aggressive are his aikido defensive maneuvers. When it comes down to it, I've found him to be possibly the most likely of the Doctors to avoid an aggressive solution. Just out of sheer rationality and cleverness. And, I don't mean it to denegrade the rest of the regenerations, but I can make a rather long list of far more destructive things they've done than him. And in case they mean an "aggressive personality," I think it's really appropriate for the Doctor to be really bitter about being exiled and taking it out on the place he doesn't appreciate being stuck in, commitment-phobe that he is by definition; and being surrounded constantly and closely by militaristic humans of a rather simple philosophy would seriously highlight his natural Time Lord intellectual arrogance.

Anybody else got any input?

I am calling upon your good taste.

I've got a friend who has gotten into Doctor Who via the new series (much like myself, all those...uh, months ago) and has turned to me to recommend old school stuff to her. So far, I've finished all of Five and nearly all of Three (still have Colony in Space, Day of the Daleks, and The Sea Devils to go), so I'm in the best place to recommend them. I've got a list of the Three episodes I want to toss at her -- admittedly, I kept it as spare as I could bring myself to -- and was wondering what you all thought, and if you had any alternate/additional recommendations.

Another thing is that I've heard a lot about how weak Three's Dalek episodes are. Like I said, I haven't seen Day yet, but Death to the Daleks was my second Three episode and, while not the most memorable, I liked it. And I recently watched Planet of the Daleks and, based on this one, I really don't get the bile. I really liked it. The conversation about bravery was wonderful, Jo taking charge and being awesome was...awesome, the Doctor/companion dynamic was very strong and sweet, I liked the overall plot...so, yeah. *shrug* The only thing was that the title totally made me expect it would take place on Skaro and then NO SKARO.

Possibly a stupid question...

...but does anyone know if Inferno is up on YouTube or Google Video? I've been dying to write an Inferno-verse AU, so I figure I should watch the episode in its entirety, but I can't seem to find it anywhere...

(And I know it's available on DVD, but my local shops don't have it and I am a terrible cheapskate would prefer not to pay shipping if I don't have to.)

Tmie Warrior Question

I'm working on a fanfic. Can anybody tell me the name of the paper by Lavinia Smith that Three read and admired? (The one he used to trip up SJS at the beginning of Episode One?) I'd be oh-so-grateful.
