[x] betweenthewoods: Big Damn Doctor Who Vid Recs, Week One: Chemistry by Holly Gimore. This is what made me finally want to watch this weird, but amusing looking, show. And I fell in love. Based off the Bones It Takes Chemistry To Solve Murders promos, this is a fun and hip look at the first 2 series of the show. Her Eyes by Emily. beautifully shows the relationship between 9 and Rose. Far Away by jagwriter. A happy, sort of AU ending, to Doomsday, with the Doctor and Rose finding each other again and living happily ever after. Touched by humansrsuperior. Still one of my top favorite vids to the day, this is an emotional rollarcoaster of a ride for the Doctor and Rose. The song is perfection for them and I still get goosebumps near the end when Rose starts to fall into the void. History Repeating by rhoboat. Have you ever found yourself watching the show and felt like you've seen this thing before? Well, this vid sets out to show all the similarities between the different companions' journey with the man in the blue box. Fun and entertaining. I Am A Scientist by di-br. This vid is so fun and the song makes you want to groove in your desk chair. all the quirkiness of 10 comes to the forefront here. His Name Is The Doctor by seduff. looks at the companions viewpoint of the Doctor, in all his fire and ice and lonely god self. The audio quotes are perfection. All To Dust by humansrsuperior. Bad Wolf aplenty and beautifully connects her statements in PotW with scenes throughout the series. The audio, combined with the stunning visuals, will glue you to your seat. Handlebars by Seah & Margie. With what's happened in WoM, this vid is especially wonderful. Every scene is a well thought out step to the conclusion. Come What May by butterfly. Doctor/Rose, this vid is haunting and lovely till the very bittersweet end. As the description says, this is a story about love.

[x] Reality Is For Those Who Lack Imagination - Rec: Battlestar Galactica: Like My Very Own Blood by jarrow. BSG. Summary: There's nothing more frakked up than family. Very intense and fast paced. It's not exactly a new idea that Adama and Kara have somewhat of a father/daughter relationship but it really is expressed brilliantly here.

[x] crack_van: VID REC: Star Wars - When you taught me how to dance/Let me teach you how to dance: When you taught me how to dance/Let me teach you how to dance by sue_chose_this. Qui-Gon JInn/Obi-Wan Kenobi. sue_chose_this makes awesome vids and this one is no exception. The images she uses go beautifully with the words of the music and together they show Obi-Wan remembering Qui-Gon and what Qui-Gon's guidance still means to him throughout his life after Qui-Gon's death. And the vid goes even beyond that.... You can see the vid on her lj page, but I recommand you use the generous opportunity she offers to download it to your computer and set it to big screen.

[x] Beyond the Roundels - Fanvid recs: fanvids that make me laugh anyway. This first one is rude (sorry!) but the editing is scarily spot on and ST Voyager meets Avenue Q in The Internet is For Pr0n by JanewayJunkie. Jaws in 60 Seconds by FringeToast Hahaha. Star Trek Meets Monty Python by Jonesy and Killa. Again, :lol:. And, actually, this might be the best edited thing... Oh, well, makes me laugh. Ones you might need to know the show for: Acceptable in the 80s B7 S3 - a tribute or a send up? It's the best B7 vid I've seen (even if it does feature the Sexist Manly Man...) Press Gang Ban the Tube Top by hezzabeth. A tribute to Lynda Day's lack of dress sense. Yay. And three's a whole series of interviews with 1980s cartoon villains, like this Mumm-Ra by MisterSharp. The newsflashes are the really amusing bit, though. (The Venger one is kind of in bad taste...) And, my fave Dunegons & Dragons vid, because it cheers me up and makes me go aw, I expect I'm alone, but cutest cartoon vid (and this is only 1.45 and balances out the rude one at the start) okay? Hearts and Flowers by Random Scribbles. And this - it's cheerful if not downright ridiculous B7 S4! Love it!

[x] crack_van: VID REC: MARVEL COMICS (IRON MAN) - Cuz I Can: Cuz I Can by Arefadedaway: It does a wonderful job of encapsulating the character arc of the Iron Man movie: from Tony Stark, carefree billionaire Merchant of Death; to Tony Stark, a man in crisis; to Iron Man, superhero. It's a cool origin story with a great beat.

[x] crack_van: VID REC: STARSKY AND HUTCH - The Way I Am: The Way I Am by Ancasta. Music by Ingrid Michaelson. Because it’s by Ancasta, who can turn her hand to angst, drama, and light-hearted fluff in equal measure. I’m surprised none of her S&H vids have been recc’ed here already, so let me set that right with this toe-tapping, smiling-all-the-way intro to all that is good in the S&H fandom. It’s short, delightful, beautifully timed and edited to the beat and lyrics of this quirky little song, and even if you're not a fan you’ll be smiling by the end, I guarantee it.

[x] crack_van: VID REC: LIFE ON MARS – The Bad Touch.: The Bad Touch by Ishamaellives. Sam/Gene. A documentary *cough* on the mating habits of Sam and Gene and the rest of their pack CID summed up very appropriately in the song's lyrics: “You and me baby ain’t nothing but mammals, so let’s do it like they do on the discovery channel.” Yes, it’s very cracky, a lot of fun and slashy as hell... What’s not to love? *g*

[x] crack_van: VID REC: TORCHWOOD - Sway: Sway by Leggedxl. Jack/Ianto. This is one of the cleverest and funniest constructed reality songvids about Jack that I've seen. Imagine if Jack told someone in the future the tall-tale version of his time at Torchwood. That's pretty much what this vid shows us, and it's just as gay, over the top and hilarious as you'd expect. The look on Jack's face when he sees Ianto with the wedding dress. Hahahaha. Just perfect! And it gets better with every viewing. *hearts vid to bits*

[x] opportunemoment | Nothing very much.: Vid-things. This one takes a while to get to the bit that made me go 'awwwww!!!' but it does get there, and all the points in between are filled with adorable Kirk/Spock so yeah. The Power of Friendship by armalarm. Also this. Genius. See, this is why I ship everything in Merlin. EVERYTHING. Including, now, Arthur/Chicken. The Lusty Month of May by elderberryink.

[x] thuviaptarth: Recs: The women of Supernatural: sisabet and sockkpuppett, Women's Work. This is still my favorite Supernatural vid of all time. And also the one that I feel offers the most accurate depiction of canon. sweetestdrain, Lagrimas. Supernatural is Mary's nightmare, take one: S1-S2. mithborien, The Devil's Inside My Head. Supernatural is Mary's nightmare, take two: S1-S4. sweetiejen, We Are Mice. Strikingly parallels Ruby and Bela's journeys in Season 3. proofpudding, So in Love with the Wrong World (Bela). I didn't think there was enough footage for a Bela vid, but proofpudding makes it work, illustrating both the obvious parallels between Bela and Dean and the heartbreaking differences. (Also, this vid introduced me to Florence and the Machine, who are probably my favorite musical discovery of the year. That voice! Florence is fucking amazing. The same song was used for a very different video by di_br, Darkening World (Merlin, Guinever and Morgana), which isn't as successful in pulling all its different pieces together but has compelling individual sections.) 0mindthegap0, Our Time (Ruby). Honestly, this is not how I saw Ruby in Season Four, but damn, I wish it was. Because she is snarky and kick-ass and fucking better than you. (Especially if your last name is Winchester.) meg_tdj, Ruby's Lullaby (Ruby). Ruby's view of Sam in Season Four: You did it all to yourself, baby.

[x] taragel: Frakking Friday: Happy Fraksgiving!: Proud by dualbunny (yes, the Starbuck/Pink vid queen!). Nicole said: I watch this and become a breathless fangirl all over again for the Adama/Roslin/Thrace family unit and the perfection that was the miniseries --> Kobol. And I whole-heartedly agree. It's a stunning ode to the heart of the show in that S1/early S2 arc and it made me a breathless fangirl all over again too. If you think your love for this show was stamped out by the finale or just due to time and fatigue and whatever else, I think if you watch this vid you might rediscover and/or be surprised by just how much squee still resides in you. Regardless of what came after, the beginning will always be beautiful. And one of the things that I love most about BSG is sharing it with all of you. It helped me discover the joys of fandom, gave me an outlet for expressing my creativity, and introduced me to some amazingly excellent people. Much love to you all.

[x] seperis: youtube's fight for a soul: Several vids I had on my favorites that were taken down are now up again and acting like they never left. Map of the Problematique by silverautum. So Much Better by LadyofTear. You really really really need to watch Map of the Problematique by silverautumn, SGA. It's amazing. I would kill or at least beg really humiliatingly for a downloadable in HD, because there is nothing about this one that isn't awesome. She catches every damn beat and the cuts of the city coming up from the water are not to be missed. She also did my favorite Children of Dune vid, Hey Jude. Just--wow. I mean, seriously, wow.

[x] bsgvidrecs - Soldiers by nnaylime: Soldiers by nnaylime. This is a really powerful/creepy show-spanning study of, well, the political landscape of being a civilisation on the run and at war. It makes really good use of its source music in a number of ways - firstly by highlighting the dichotomy between the idealised and sanitised image of soldiers and of war, and the reality of what we expect of them and the politics and brutality that often drives wars in the first place. Secondly, I really enjoy the way she uses the angry monologue in the second half of the piece. Very slick editing and well-worth a watch!

Visit Michael's website to see the wonderful gag reel and deleted scenes. ash48 saw the vid and loved it, and in turn made her own fan vid about the fanvid. Brilliant!

[x] bsgvidrecs - Wild - Starbuck/awesomeness OTP: Wild by canadiangirl_86. (Kara Motherfrakking Thrace) Because it's fun, fast-paced, and full of PURE JOY. It's hard to watch this vid without getting a Starbuck-loving smile on your face, while she kicks ass, flies Vipers, kisses guys, and does that two-handed pistol thing she does. Jo did a great job with the song choice and action!editing.

Whump, crack, and Winchesters: a nostalgic look back on four and a half years of friends, family, hunting, and the apocalypse... because even a show about the end of the world can be optimistic. I don't know why it took me so long to discover this vid but it's pretty much amazing! It's so incredibly bittersweet - a perfect representation of the show. It perfectly balances the fun, light-hearted moments with the serious heart-wrenching ones! I dare you not to smile while watching this - and on the flips side I also dare you not to get a little misty eyed! Not to mention a delightfully catchy song and some great, fluid editing!

[x] bradcpu: Vid rec: If you haven't yet seen kiki_miserychic's latest vid, That Broken Day (The Broken), definitely check it out. It's one of the best vids I've seen this year. From music choice/use to pacing to storytelling, practically everything about it is just masterful. Note that it contains rape, violence, and some extremely disturbing imagery... which probably doesn't surprise you if you've seen one of Whitney's vids in the past. Still, even by her standards this one is nightmare-inducing. It says a lot about the vid that maybe the most disturbing thing in it is a cup of coffee.

Everyone who knows me knows my endless love for Baltar, and luckily he's inspired quite a few awesome character vids. This is a lesser-known but extremely cool Baltar-focused vid from season 1-2, which doesn't overly sympathize or minimize the destruction caused by him. It's a pretty accurate study of how he sees himself and his fatal weaknesses.

[x] trascendenza: My Gus/Shawn love, let me share it.: Money Maker by talitha78. I think of this as the flagship Gus/Shawn vid. The combination of the song plus the dancing plus the damn, I'm so sexy faces these two are always making = priceless.

[x] luzula | Rec + archiving!: In vid_commentary, there are DVD commentary versions of vids, made by both the original vidders and by someone else. For example, here is heresluck's commentary for her F/K vid Out Here, and here is a commentary for the same vid by sisabet. The first commentary is more analytical, and explains what the vidder was trying to do with the vid, and the second leans more toward fangirl squee, which made me smile, since I've never heard that in verbal form (as opposed to written). Anyway, both of these added a lot to my appreciation and understanding of the vid. I also really enjoyed the commentaries to the BSG vid Babies and the Firefly vid Hard Sun.

[x] a true friend - SGU fanvids: You'll Find a Way by xiongky. This is, insofar as I can tell, the first vid for the fandom! It's short and sweet, and I love the song. This isn't a narrative vid, per se, but I think it really highlights the desperation and frantic nature of Destiny's plight, mostly through the song choice and the rapid cuts. In this Together by colls. This vid is so well edited to reflect the lyrics of the song, sometimes quite literally. What I love about this vid is that it emphasizes that they must all work together to survive while also acknowledging the tensions that undercut that solidarity. Hands by Gab. Very moving. I love the examination of character here, particularly the moment where Eli is identified as the one who stands up for what's right. Bonus points for awesome use of show dialogue. how far we've come by shinealightonme. OMG, this vid makes me so happy!! I love the pacing, and I especially love the footage that plays over the section of the song that talks about saying goodbye. Maybe Tomorrow by bionic. This is the only vid of this set that tells a story that is different from the one we're seeing onscreen. It's a Young/Rush vid that does a really good job of creating a relationship between these two men from such a small amount of screentime for all the characters. The song seems an odd choice, particularly in the first like twenty seconds of the vid, but stick with it because I think ultimately, it works really well.

[x] don't expect it to tango - What about aliens? What about you and me? What about gold beneath the sea?: For anyone who hasn't seen it yet, I strong suggest everyone who watched last night's episode of Supernatural and got bummed out to go and watch What About Everything? by emily_reich immediately and repeatedly. It's got clips from all but five episodes of Supernatural (including last night, as it was made last week) and it's fun, comprehensive and restored my faith in everything being ok in the show again. Plus it has cracky fun and whumpy angst in one neat little package. You must partake!

[x] obsessive24: vid rec: that brøken day by kiki_miserychic, The Brøken. Remember that absolutely haunting scene in >Last Days where the camera trains itself on the house and very slowly pulls away while the Kurt Cobain character strings together a relentlessly bleak tune out of resounding guitar loops and senseless howling vocals, and then starts kicking all hell out of the drums? That song is such an immediate, desolate representation of pain that it's nigh on impossible to envision it as vid music. But it is carried off brilliantly here. I know nothing of the source, except that it looks amazing (reminds me of The Machinst. And, weirdly, Mulholland Dr.) and has Lena Headey in it, so that's quite enough reason to be watching. I love the way the editing builds and releases suspense. It's gorgeous work.

[x] bsgvidrecs - Friday Free-for-All: Does Cameron Dream of Electric Sheep?: Does Cameron Dream of Electric Sheep? by kiki_miserychic. Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles. Song: Black Gold Blues , Laura Viers. I think of BSG and TSCC as two shows telling a similar story, but in completely different ways. TSCC's approach to AI and walking toasters is much colder and more robotic than the Cylons, but just as complex. This vid gets inside the mind of terminator Cameron and does a really great job capturing everything frightening and compelling about her. The ending gave me actual chills.

[x] bsgvidrecs - Friday Free-for-All: Tear You Apart (Firefly): Tear You Apart by bradcpu. Firefly/Serenity. It's a haunting look at love and sex as filtered through the fragile, twisted mind of River. I find this vid nothing less than AWE-INSPIRING in the way it repurposes footage (without necessarily being AU) and transforms probably the sweetest and most innocent relationship in the Firefly 'verse into something with such dark and disturbing overtones. (Simon/Kaylee! I mean, Jesus!) The use of repetition and building on visual themes is amazing.

[x] bsgvidrecs - Landing (Gaius/Six/Gina): Landing by fahrbotdrusilla. (Baltar/Six, Baltar/Gina) My kiiiiiids! *cough* Um, yes. This vid is pretty and crisp and has fab editing (I always thought the start of the verse from 1:26 was especially awesome). And it's just kinda them, ambient and techno and dreamy. The shift to Gina as it nears the end is very well done.

This is one of the most famous Doctor Who vids around, so you may have seen it before, but it deserves to be recced many times over, so here goes: This vid captures the Doctor perfectly - whimsical and playful, sweet and empathetic, powerful and alien, and sometimes, terrifying. All of the things that the Doctor is, and what he leaves behind (good and bad) - it is all captured here. Such an amazing video.

[x] bsgvidrecs - Brothers on a Hotel Bed (Kara/Lee): Brothers on a Hotel Bed by sabaceanbabe (Kara/Lee). Not just for shippy balance, but because this is actually one of my favorite vids from Sbabe. (It also made this song a Pilots earworm in my brain forever.) I think because I so often go back and forth on Kara/Lee, but this vid kind of encapsulates them in a way I find really touching. The more they grow and find new and exciting ways to feel angsty about who they are, they're still always connected in this bond of platonic and sibling and romantic love.

[x] bsgvidrecs - We See Differently (Kara/Sam): We See Differently by gigglemonster. Another K/S rec! Hopefully an original one this time! Where Between has more of a linear narrative, this vid is moody and visual. The vidder (formerly dayln03) has a very distinctive and effects-heavy style that makes it simply beautiful to *look* at. It's a perfect slice of longing and angst presented in a uniquely gorgeous way.

[x] Supernatural “At the Movies”: Context, Canon, and Genre in AU Vids | In Media Res: Ash48’s “At the Movies” is a collection of fictional movie trailers that clearly use Supernatural as a source yet recontextualize the footage with music and other features like decoloration to invoke specific generic conventions. In the Saw segment, for example, the viewer recognizes Sam yet quickly rereads the given footage within the genre of slasher movies. Supernatural already combines various genres, including teen and horror, yet this vid moves through an even more diverse array of genres. Ranging from spaghetti western and film noir to slasher movie and screwball comedy, “At the Movies” requires only a few seconds to invoke these diverse generic filmic conventions and create a series of AUs.

By retroactively inserting the showrunner into the vid as its big white guy in the sky, Moon vs. Sun engages the question of how vids can write back to the tyranny of sanctioned authorship, capturing both the futility and, through its very existence, the possibility of this struggle. Rather than incorporating the events of the finale in order to critique them, Chaila’s Order in the Sound excises them completely to offer Battlestar Galactica an alternative ending ... Through the perspective of Kara Thrace, this vid stitches back together the connections—between the central female characters, between technological innovation and divine revelation, between humans and Cylons with a hybrid destiny—that the final season had sundered. [x] Mission Report: The Medium Is The Message | In Media Res: Lim’s multimedia Mission Report imagines a typical Stargate adventure as told by one of the show’s native (i.e. alien) characters. The vid not only imagines the way an oral culture might tell history, it also contradicts the show’s heroic narratives and tells a story of exploitation and entitlement. Mission Report articulates the point of view of Teyla, the Stargate team’s only woman as well as a native of the galaxy the team is exploring. Lim literally gives Teyla voice by composing and singing an original song from her perspective. The song is sung in the round, demonstrating a way of remembering that is collaborative and communitarian, the very opposite of an individually-authored military document. [More]

[x] So Damn Hot – a From Eroica with Love vid by Diana Williams | In Media Res: Diana Williams’s So Damn Hot ... based as it is on the manga From Eroica with Love. This vid raises all sorts of questions about narrative. Ultimately, all vids grow from a multimedia context, since they are part of the fannish intertext including both the source and its multifarious fanworks: but the Eroica fandom is missing the moving image component. So Damn Hot decidedly tells a story, and a moving one as that. Not only it creates the impression of physical movement through a very fast cutting/editing in strict tempo with the music and the song lyrics, and through some subtle animation tricks; this vids situates itself in the slash fandom’s mainstream where a conflictually emotional, moving, narrative genre is distilled from a mostly farcical comic series. It is tempting to say that So Damn Hot extracts movement from stillness in the same way Eroica fans have re-narrativised Japanese slapstick into Western realism: a transnarrative, transmedia and transcultural movement.

[x] I am a woman of a certain reputation. - Vid Recs: Multiple & Various: Creepin' Up On You by WafflesnBrains. Heroes. Mohinder/Sylar. I'm recommending this video because it appeals to my guilty pleasure, which is creepy!love. it does have element of like, a 1980's horror love story. It's definitely a video that re-contextualizes the source (my favorite kind!) And the ending is my absolute favorite part. Shake It by analeian. The Big Bang Theory. this video captures everything I love about the show. Its high intensity, and seems like a longer video than it actually is. It's a good happy-making video. Somewhere A Clock Is Ticking by Cursd818. Criminal Minds. Morgan/Reid? Oh fuck yes, please. My newest attention stealer.It's a really emotional video, and Reid's delicacy really comes through int his video. He's almost like a baby bird here, somehow, such potential contained in this easily damaged package. When You Fly Too Close To The Ground by 404ing. Supernatural. Gorgeous style and flow. This is not just a video about Castiel, it is a video that *feels* like Castiel. It has his conflicted heart in every clip. It examines his relationship with Dean, Anna, and Uriel. There are some beautiful transitions which morph Castiel into Dean, a beautiful metaphor for the videos theme of an Angel getting too close to humans. There is nothing I don't love about this video.

[x] crack_impala: Friday - Vids/Art/Icons/Misc: Rebellion (Lies, Lies) by mithborien. Excellent balance of both their journeys, using both familiar and underused footage for a fresh perspective on the progression of their relationship over all four seasons. Fabulous erotic tension throughout. For My Brother by ancastar. A brilliant song choice and beautiful lyrical editing. The ending is perfect!

[x] Sawed-Off Recommendations - 135: Sam/Ruby fics and videos.: hot n cold by bleeding_muse. Ruby/Sam. I love this vid! Three minutes of everything that makes this pairing so compelling to me, with fabulous lyric matching and just in general great technique throughout the vid. A must-watch if you love this pairing like I do. And the song is a fantastic choice for them. addicted by kjcharmed. Sam/Ruby. I adore this vid as well; again, the song is a perfect match for their relationship, and it's great storytelling within, using clips we all know well by now to create something new. Ruby's Lullaby by meg_tdj. Ruby/Sam. Ruby sings to Sam while he sleeps. This won SVS's video of the month and an SVS gold award, and it deserves it. This vid is incredible, the lyrics match in such a way that astounded me every time.

This is a songvid about Jack, his journey, the people he loves, and just how hard some of it has been. But there's hope too, along with laughter, adventure and lots of love. I adore the Jack in this vid -- he's my Jack, and this vid is definitely one to watch and re-watch. To cap it all off, this is Kaydee Fall's first vid. I'm so blown away by that. Just, wow. Don't forget to leave her a comment saying how much you liked it.

[x] spnroundtable: october 2009 crack_van recs: a mixed assortment: Vid Rec: For Blue Skies by c. This vid is a stunning, heartbreaking and ultimately hopeful look at the disintegration of Sam and Dean's relationship over season 4 and the hope that they can and will put themselves back together again, stronger than before, in season 5 (it contains no season 5 spoilers). I was skeptical of the song at first, but the lyrics are surprisingly apt, and the whole thing works beautifully. I really like the inclusion of dialogue, as well. There is not enough oh, boys in the world. *sigh* It's the only vid I've ever loaded onto my iPod so I can watch it any time the need strikes, and uh, it strikes pretty often. Highly recommended.

[x] bsgvidrecs - Only (Final Fivers): Only by cherryice. Somehow NIN + vidding is always win, and this is one of my favorite Cylony vids. Similar to crickets' Karma Police , it deals with the struggle of the Final 4/5 to reconcile their newfound identity with everything they once hated -- and it's especially impressive considering they'd *just* been revealed as Cylons and the vidder is building entirely from seasons 1-3. I really like the movement and clip choices in this vid. It uses lots of awesome, brutal intercutting (i.e. my favorite thing ever) to get its point across.

[x] Menagerie Madness - SPN vid recs: Monsters: Born Under A Bad Sign by proofpudding. This is the vid I always associate with Sam's dark path. Even though it was made before everything came down in season 4, Sam's dark, chilling side couldn't be any clearer. Freak by proofpudding. This is a short vid, made as a kind of coda to 4.21. I really love the music used for this. It's heavy and foreboding and when matched to season 1 and 2 clips, it really conveys the dread for what is to come. Monsters by secretlytodream. AU. The Winchesters tread such a fine line between good and evil, it's frightening how easy it is to make them look like monsters.

And holy shit, Owen Wilson?! It's the End of the World As We Know It (And I Feel Fine) by deirdre_c. Oh my god this is like the perfect recap of S4. It's such an upbeat take on SamnDean starting with Lazarus Rising and ending with Lucifer Rising . A Charming Man by giandujakiss. And the fanvid that kick started this new obsession bookends the rec list. This was cut and edited and pieced together so fucking perfectly, and never mind that every time I watch it I fall a little more in love with Castiel. Also? Perfect song.

[x] FAN VIDEO SUNDAY: EDWARD/BELLA STAY AWAKE - Twilighters Anonymous - New Moon Movie: We have an Edward and Bella video for this week’s Fan Video Sunday. This video is from discoroadkill’s YouTube channel. It is titled Edward/Bella Stay Awake and the music is Stay Awake by All Time Low. The music is so great. I love how fast-paced it is. That’s a little uncommon with Twilight videos. I thought the video overall is very good too. I liked the clips used. I think they really fit. The effects were also very visually interesting. Overall, it’s a great video, but the music really makes it stand out!

[x] crack_van: Fanvid: All Souls Night by: Arendil: As today we have All Souls Day, I'd like to start my month with a vid that is a perfect combination of the theme and LoTR fandom. All Souls Night by: Arendil / aren_chan. Because both the editing and the choice of song create an impression of a fairy tale, world of make believe and magic. World from our dreams rather than film. Arendil did an excellent job on this, and I'm truly awed by the result. It doesn't focus on any central character, rather on the impression of Arda in general, and does it in a way that doesn't make any of the characters seem shallow- they are all part of the greater thing.

Other than it being so friggin' hilarious, I just love the observations that have been made here about the show. I would love to know how long this took them to produce this. It's long. Becca's vids blow me away so much because they are more nuanced and layered than I'm always getting something out of it upon re-watch. This is incredibly graphic and violent but it's well-worth a watch. balistik94 has such a deft editing touch and I've not seen the movie before, but holy crap, now I do. It has such a build to it that I was really holding my breath through most of it. It's definitely a must-see. Pour Lui by chasarumba. James Bond. This is beautiful and a vid by chasa. I don't need to say anything else. *breathless sigh*

The Burly Man The Matrix. Remastered! Reburlied! Mr. Anderson is way cooler than the coolest thing I've ever seen. Plus I freaking love this Limp Bizkit song. And the editing is just so in your face and the clip choices are perfect. Crazy in Love by sisabet and cappy. Merlin. Merlin + Arthur = <3 <3 <3 <3 My roommate laughed when she realized I giggle at the exact same places whenever I re-watch the video. Because. O. M. G. there are not enough OMGs or a font big enough to textually render my adoration and glee for this vid. Seriously. IT IS SO GOOD. Heroes: Oh No You Didn't. Sylar. omg. oh no you didn't! I can hear aurora_84 laughing from across the world. really. Also? *falls on the floor giggling like a banshee* Creeping Up on You. This is what all Sylar/Mohinder fic is like. Really. And I would be lying if I didn't shriek in joy and surprise at 3:18. Decontexualizing clips for. the. win. Oh. I'm not always an automatic fan of constructed reality vids, but here? Here is a big mofo'ing yes. yes yes yes. *jumps around* yes yes. yes. and omg. yes. *has turned into a puddle of fangirl goo* Because I am loving and missing Nathan Petrelli a lot right now, Four Seasons in One Day by greensilver. I will never, ever get sick of watching this vid. Over and over. Oh, Nathan.

[x] bsgvidrecs - Fandom Free-For-All: American Baby (FNL): American Baby by Luminosity. Friday Night Lights. I'm a fan of Friday Night Lights and I know some BSG viewers are too. In a weird way, they have a lot in common despite their differences -- naturalistic acting and camera work, rousing moments of hardship and victory. This lovely season one vid really captures the spirit of the show.

[x] bsgvidrecs - Fandom Free-For-All: I'm Your Man: I'm Your Man by charmax. Multifandom. It's a must-see for anyone who likes femslash, women, or just brilliant editing. Summarized as a celebration of media cliches , it uses clips from a wide variety of femslash sources (both canon and subtexty) to draw attention to the images and tropes that repeat over and over. Like cross-dressing, knife play, dead/evil lesbians, and (in my favorite section) touching between doors, glass, and other barriers. A little snarky and very playful, this is one of those vids I can rewatch any time.

[x] bsgvidrecs - Same Girl - Chief/Helo/Eights crackvid: Same Girl: The Ballad of Chief and Helo by reflectlight and lumosnoodles. Boomer/Chief, Athena/Helo. Proving once again that there are some valuable vids on YouTube, this is one of my all-time favorite BSG crack vids. With flawless and surprisingly non-repetitive editing, it tells the story of Galen and Helo, two BFFs who are shocked - shocked! - to realize they've been dating the same two-timing woman. (Spoiler alert: The original music video ended with Kelly and Usher realizing their same girl was actually twins. Or a Cylon.) My favorite moments in this vid are some of the hilarious facial expressions the vidder found for Chief and Helo, in the sections where they're narrating or talking to each other.

[x] bsgvidrecs - Between - Kara/Sam: Between by sache8. This is one of those vids I feel many people *have* seen, though it may be because my flist leans Kara/Sam. But for some CRAZY reason I don't see it recced here yet, and I aim to correct this. Kara and Sam unexpectedly became one of my favorite couples on BSG and I am not ashamed to say this vid makes me teary-eyed. But I think even non-shippers would appreciate the story-telling. I love how it explores Kara's 'destiny' and Sam's Cylonity as the third player in their relationship, which both connects them and drives them apart. (Bonus: It's one of the surprisingly few BSG vids out there that makes use of an entire story arc through the series finale.)

[x] bsgvidrecs - Headlights: Headlights by buffyann. It's one of my old hard-drive favorites: a sad, mystical, beautifully constructed vid about Kara and the pull of her destiny (through Maelstrom ). I feel like I very rarely *see* vids like this in BSG fandom -- it's not too heavy with effects (though there's some great use of overlays) yet it's extremely visual and dream-like. The way the mandala imagery flows together is especially beautiful.

[x] bsgvidrecs - Moon vs. Sun: Moon vs. Sun by beccatoria. Because I am currently *obsessed* with this vid. There are moments that make me smile and clap like a three-year-old, and moments that are angry-making and thought-provoking. I feel like I could do an entire commentary on it. But I'll just say that it begins as a brilliant tribute to the Roslin/Baltar conflict (which so needs more vids dedicated to it), and by the end becomes a study of some of the squickier race and gender issues of season 4.5. Becca and I differ in some of our opinions and rage levels, but I am fully swept up in the narrative of this vid. It's witty, unflinching, and incredible.

The vid makes me laugh in a good way. 30 Rock: Womanizer (YouTube) by duchesscloverly. OMG Jack Donaghy is such a womanizer. This vid gets many kudos to me for the wonderful editing and best timed-use of clicking tongs, for real. Dr. Horrible: Captain Hammer is also a Womanizer, this one done by winterevanesce. It makes me laugh because it's true. Just as fabulous as the 30 Rock version.

[x] I am a woman of a certain reputation. - Vid Rec: Crazy In Love: Crazy In Love by sisabet and cappy. Merlin, Merlin/Arthur. Merlin as Beyonce, Arthur as Jay Z. Don't tell me you're shocked. If you need something to pick you up and dust you off after a long, dredge-filled day at work, or maybe you just got into a fight with your partner and you're wondering why you put up with him/her anymore... watch this video. For the first person, you'll relax and laugh. For the second, you'll realize that you don't put up with nearly as much as Merlin does and he still TOTALLY DIGS Arthur. What really caught me up with this video was how unapologetically fun it was. I love to find that true joy in a video, where you can tell the vidder had a blast making it. There's also some creative syncing action going on there, where through actions or lip-service, the characters are the mouthpieces of the song. I adore that trick, because it brings a musical-esque quality to a video.

This vid yields its meanings subtly, allowing the raw eroticism between the Winchester brothers to lie always just below the surface. Add in equal parts violence and evocative character study and you come out with a stunning and unique portrait of the brothers and their relationship. Not to mention sharp editing, impeccable timing and an amazing song choice. Easily one of my top three favorite Supernatural vids of all time.

[x] bsgvidrecs - Challenge #2: Middleman by bop_radar: Middleman by bop_radar. Song by Bright Eyes. Middleman is a definitive character study of Lee. The vidder obviously knows this character inside and out and has clearly given thought to every clip choice in this vid. The result is a thoughtful, comprehensive vid including all of Lee's important actions--good and bad--and meditating on the reasons for them, as well as all his important relationships and the effect they cumulatively have on him. The vid might not make me love him any more, but it certainly explains him (with a lot more complexity and coherence than the show ever did).

[x] genusshrike | mord-sith destroyed my brain: Watched hollywoodgrrl's Legend of the Seeker vid, 'Doll Parts' – I've only seen snippets of the show, but I used to read the books,* and gosh, if it didn't give me flashbacks to when I was young and impressionable, reading Wizard's First Rule. Oh, the Mord-Sith. They're so awesome, their leather is red to hide the blood when they cut you, yes. ... the epic torture sex. And the pain which put you outside yourself, feeling like eternity in a moment. And then Denna being redeemed through Richard's love (because she was tortured to-oo!), and them having vanilla sex before whatever plot happened to pull them apart. It was totally fucked up and awesome. And I'm kind of disturbed at how well I actually remember it. I'd kind of expected they'd cut that part out of the TV show, but I guess they just cut out the actual sex parts and had some totally drawn out make-outs instead. It's still totally messed up, so it's all good, right? Gods, that book is probably burnt into my id forever.

Vid Recs posted in October, Part 7A[x] wistfuljane: Rec Set: Multifandom, TRC, xxxHolic and Princess Tutu Vids: DancesoHOLiC by Kiril Petkov, xxxHolic. DancesoHOLiC is pure genius. For some contexts: Watanuki Kimihiro, the main protagonist of xxxHolic, is a spazz. He flails, gestures dramatically and makes expressive faces constantly. He's one of the most fun characters to watch/read. In fact, most of the characters of xxxHolic have confessed to enjoying watching Watanuki and his sideshow themselves. For DancesoHOLiC, the vidder edited footage of Watanuki being a spazz and made a dance video. It's comedy gold and one of those see to understand things. Hold Me Now by Marisa Panaccio, Princess Tutu. Okay, I bow to the wisdom of all those who recced Hold Me Now before, because you are right: it is awesome. Hold Me Now is like a condensed 3 minutes ballet concert, full of rising actions, climaxes, dance offs and duels. So awesome. Unbreakable 2.0 by Songbird21, Multi. Unbreakable 2.0 is an alternate version of Unbreakable, missing about a few seconds of lip-syncing footage, but not much of a different. It's an inspirational action vid and with such an upbeat Pop song chosen, I was pleasantly surprised by how effective the action sequences work off the music, but work it did. I couldn't stop re-watching the vid.

[x] wistfuljane | Rec Set: Multifandom, TRC, xxxHolic and Princess Tutu Vids: Pretty Sparkles: Remixed by jaddziadax, Multi. Pretty Sparkles: Remixed is a remix of another vid by the same name and is a delightful, fun and upbeat tribute to the Magical Girl genre in animanga at that. The song choice is genius and coupled with the footage and editing, it perfectly highlights the utter joy that is the genre, of each characters reveling in their powers, in adventures, friendship and love. ♥ Prayer by inverseshell, Tsubasa: Reservoir Chronicle. Prayer is like vid porn -- or the pinnacle of emo(tional) porn in vidding -- for me. The vid hits all kind of buttons for me, not just in term of general story narration, but also in term of exactly the character dynamics that I love in Tsubasa-verse. The story arc on Fai/Kurogane is particularly intense; for only about two minutes of screen time, the narrative packs a punch and is a powerful example of dramatic structure in action in vidding. Fitting song choice + gorgeous imagery + skillful editing + powerful narrative (action + tension) + OTPs = vid porn for me.

[x] sally_maria: Halloween Vid Rec: Since I missed linking to this when it first came out, back in the summer, I thought I'd wait for the most appropriate day of the year. This is a Supernatural/Buffy vid, but I honestly don't think it matters whether you've only seen one or neither of them. Mostly it's a brilliant use of TV footage and editing to illustrate the song. Thriller by Michael Jackson, by Buffyann. The original video for this song was utterly brilliant, but this runs it pretty close, IMHO.

[x] crack_van: VID REC: DCU (Teen Titans) - High School Never Ends: High School Never Ends by Stargazer777. I was tempted by the vidder's What Really Goes On in Titans Tower series (Part 1, Part 2, Part 3, Part 4* (*especially this one), Part 5), all very very AMV in style/humor, but I went with High School Never Ends because the laughs were bigger. The lyrics make sense juxtaposed with the visuals, and there's some clever in-joke humor (Robin's a mess, ha!). Plus I like the song.

[x] crack_van: Vid Rec: Merlin - Empty Hearts: Empty Hearts by sweetestdrain. Merlin/Arthur/Morgana/Gwen. The vidder warns for complete fluff and lack of depth, but honestly, that's what makes this vid so charming and watchable. Arthurian Legend is thoroughly depressing, what with all the betrayals of love and friendship, and while the BBC version has hinted at this future, in the meantime it remains thoroughly committed to (at least in my mind) the OT4 dynamic of Morgana/Merlin/Gwen/Arthur. And I'm a firm believer that this version will prevail. This vid explores the various ways - the little touches and looks between the four that demonstrates their OT4ness and how they all depend on each other. I just want to draw sparkly hearts around this vid and I hope you get a similar feeling when you watch it as well.

[x] Ancasta's Corner - Oh Dear God! :-): I love Sam Winchester and I love h/c with him as the hurtee. I don't know if I would call this vid a hurt comfort extravaganza. Though wounded Sam certainly factors in. Think of it more as a crack Sam-in-peril-needing-rescue-set-to-80's-power-rock vid. Seriously--I laughed so hard watching this, I was crying. I was practically hooting! It's silly and just brilliant. The cutting is first rate, and it's just...good. Go watch it. And while you're at her LJ, look up The End of the World as We Know It. Awesome tribute to Supernatural Season Four. It's so good columnist Mo Ryan rec'ed it in the Chicago Tribune.

[x] crack_van: VIDREC: The UNCLE Knights Affair by Spiritedshadow (G): The UNCLE Knights Affair by Spiritedshadow (G). Fandom: THE MAN FROM U.N.C.L.E. Napoleon Solo/Illya Kuryakin. This video is delightful to watch, brilliant editing and great choice of clips. It takes us on a wacky journey through what our boys have had to endure throughout the series. There's a catchy song which is always a must for a fanvid (having made several myself I know you HAVE to like the song since you'll be listening to it several hundred times as you edit :S), plus I love the clever use of mixing different shots where one of the boys is falling or twirling a weapon. Dang, wish I'd thought of that! Having said that, there are loads of my favourite clips here, so I can't really complain :P Well edited, catchy song, great clips. I spotted some slashy type clips, but then again I always do. All in all, a great video. Now stop listening to me rant and watch it!

[x] crack_van: VID REC: The Sentinel - Stacy’s Dad: Stacy’s Dad by Jane Davitt. Jim/Blair. This song is a spoof of Stacy’s Mom by Fountains of Wayne. I prefer Stacy’s Dad much better – it makes me laugh. Uncle Izzy quite cheekily sings about a young man lusting over his friend’s dad. I like this vid because it also makes me laugh. Stacy’s Dad (Jim in the starring role) shows how “really, really rad” he is with clips of his more spectacular daring deeds. Jumping on cars and crashing through windows, dressed in Kevlar and looking so hunky. No wonder Blair would prefer him to the charms of Stacy (aka Maya). Normally when making a TS slash vid, the vidder relies on outtakes of the guys hugging, holding hands, kissing etc. Jane uses only canon clips to show how gobsmacked Blair is with Jim and how Jim doesn’t seem to mind in the least. The salute to canon’s Stacey from “Sleeping Beauty” at the end of the vid is just adorable. So are Jim and Blair in this fun piece from Jane.

I am a soldier baby, who works just like a slave / sweating through the pain of digging his foxhole that he know is just a grave. // The cutting is fantastic, the mood is grim and the light it casts Castiel in is much more in line with the dark, scary figure he was back in the beginning. The connections between the lyrics and the clips is amazing and the whole thing seems to suggest more than it says up front.

[x] crack_van: VID REC: The X-Files - Walking After You: Walking After You by Erock/silenceandnoise. Mulder/Scully. This video is a beautiful tribute to Mulder and Scully's partnership. It's unique in that every clip is in sequential order, going through their relationship from the beginning to the end. The editing fits the song so well and I just can't get enough of it. This song was re-released by the Foo Fighters on the soundtrack for the first X-Files movie b/c Dave Grohl is such a huge X-Files fan. It's perfect b/c the song just completely embodies Mulder and Scully, their relationship, and what they would do for one another. Check it out! It's a fantastic vid.

[x] crack_van: VID REC: NCIS - Ducky Mallard: NCIS - Ducky Mallard by Kate Todd1989. It is the last Friday of the month and you know what that means…Video Time! Gibbs/Ducky, and Gen Team. I guess because I am a sucker for bagpipes … and for Ducky Mallard. This Vid has lots of Gibbs/Ducky, but also has a nice sprinkling of Ducky with other team members. And some nice Mrs. Mallard moments. The music stirs my Celtic soul and makes me want to go out and toss a caber or two.

[x] crack_van: VID REC: due South - Wanna Dance With Somebody: Wanna Dance With Somebody by CAROSAL. Fraser/Kowalski, Kowalski/Stella. Vidding is about more than putting random clips, or god forbid static images, to random music. This particular vid is so beautiful because it takes era appropriate music - this song came out like four years before the show began - and combines it with some sharp edits and clips that actually match the lyrics. This is a tricky thing to do, trust me. Besides, RayK dancing to upbeat, perky music... Who doesn't like that?

[x] crack_van: VID REC: Supernatural – For Blue Skies: For Blue Skies by alifeuncommon16. This vid is a stunning, heartbreaking and ultimately hopeful look at the disintegration of Sam and Dean's relationship over season 4 and the hope that they can and will put themselves back together again, stronger than before, in season 5 (it contains no season 5 spoilers). I was skeptical of the song at first, but the lyrics are surprisingly apt, and the whole thing works beautifully. I really like the inclusion of dialogue, as well. There is not enough oh, boys in the world. *sigh* It's the only vid I've ever loaded onto my iPod so I can watch it any time the need strikes, and uh, it strikes pretty often. Highly recommended.

There are only a handful of vids in this fandom, and most of them aren't that great, but this one is cute. The tilting edits and the bouncy music combine together for an appropriate sense of teenage confusion.

[x] crack_van: VID REC: Shakespeare (Romeo and Juliet) -- The Wings (Brokeback Mountain Theme): Shakespeare (Romeo and Juliet) -- The Wings (Brokeback Mountain Theme). Vidder: Civilwarchick1862. Romeo/Mercutio, Romeo/Juliet. This is a great example of a popular genre done exquisitely well, such that it really does seem like a fresh idea with something worth saying. Romeo and Juliet, of course, is the iconic love story of the Western world, and Franco Zeffirelli's 1968 movie of same is still the most popular version of it. Brokeback Mountain was about as popular as that movie, and its story is definitely in the same vein. It's formatted as though it were a true movie trailer, even using intertitles just as the Brokeback Mountain trailer did. (That some of the intertitles are selections from Shakespeare's Sonnet 17 just adds to the awesomeness.) The clips from the movie are well chosen to highlight and enhance both relationships, the editing is nearly flawless, and Civilwarchick1862 weaves clips, music, and intertitles together to tell a real little story, not just revel in the pretty. Pay special attention to Juliet's role; every single bit of that is from the film, but in this context, her relationship with Romeo seems completely different.

And then I start wondering who the hell this Mika is (shut up, I'm old), and I end up tapping my toes to this and pretty soon I'm checking Amazon and making a note to have someone get me the CDs for Christmas. ADDICTIVE BRIT!POP IS ADDICTIVE. And then I find this and it makes me think about writing a Merlin RPS story where Bradley watches the vid and realizes he's kind of turned on by watching mostly-naked Mika leap around, which is kind of odd since he's not all that attracted to blokes normally, and then it further hits him that the guy is built a lot like Colin, and what does that even mean?

[x] were_duck | Vid rec: One Foot Boy: giandujakiss posted a new Merlin vid, One Foot Boy, set to a Mika song, it's kind of a great juxtaposition of infectious slashiness and discomfort with the source. It's like, the images are so dark in color and often tone, but the song is so bubbly, it really calls attention to the gap in how I am supposed to perceive the show (light and fluffy) and how I actually do (weird and dark and uncomfortable with a lot of what I see onscreen). The song itself has weird lyrics about a tiny man sitting on the singer's shoulder and is he imagining him? I gave up trying to understand what was going on in the lyrics. But I dare you to watch this vid and not also have a grin stretching from ear to ear, even as you shake your head at the show. My favorite part is just before the end, the bit with Lancelot--Merlin's expression is perfect.

I think I re-watched this vid about 4 times before I realized I hadn't recommended it! really go and watch, the song, the clip choices, the shifting pov, all of it blended together to create this heartbreaking Sam and Dean vid that really showed what they'd been through. This is how I see the Doctor-- yes, he's wonderful and fun but also ever so very powerful and alien. He may consider the Earth (one of) his pet planet(s) but that doesn't mean that he's not scary too. Four Years by Fabella (wistful_fever). SGA. Oh, John and Rodney love each other so much! And then they do Atlantis things! The Temptation of John Sheppard by isagel. SGA. From inside John's head, we look at Rodney. Oh, I love this vid simply amazing amounts. Apple Candy by talitha78. Star Trek Reboot. I love the cutting and the pacing and how well the clips are suited to telling a story along with the song. I love the longing that Kirk feels and from the looks of Uhura and Spock I'm convinced that they all end up together. Open Secrets of the Pegasus Galaxy by yevgenie. SGA. This is one of those vids I had to watch a bunch before I felt that I was understanding what the vidder was trying to do. I like it because it reminds me that the situation in Pegasus is much more complicated than the show often portrayed it and that things are not always simple and easy and such in a war zone.

All Is Full of Love by obsessive24 (True Blood) Masterful use of secondary source and metaphors to amp up the impact of a relationship study (Godric/Eric). Also, gorgeous. The Powerpuff Girls - Buffy the Vampire Slayer Style by jagwriter78. Quite possibly the crackiest vid I've seen so far this year, and I say that in a post that also includes a rec for a Lesbian Vampire Killers vid. Rake It In by thedothatgirl (Dollhouse). S1 overview that puts the blame squarely on the Dollhouse management. Love how the overlays and source effects are used, as well as the theme of eventually reaping what you sow. The Burly Man (remastered) by mranderson71 (The Matrix) Having a bad day? Here's the perfect way to blow off some steam. The original is one of my most rewatched vids, and the remaster is tighter, sharper, and angrier.

And all the vids are so good that . . . it's like, they make me believe that these shows do exist, under there somewhere, and that they must exist because look, someone else saw that show too. I think that's what makes me cry.

[x] smilla02: drive-by supernatural vid rec: Hurt by ash48, whose videos I've always enjoyed - funny or cracky or angsty like this one. The song is by Johnny Cash and the editing manages to rip your heart out for Dean evenmore than the show does. Like I said in my feedback to the vidder, this video, what it shows with its fantastic editing is why Dean is so hurt. How it's not simply about Sam, even when it is all about Sam - not for a matter of blame or whose fault it is - but because it's Dean and everything starts and ends with Sam - and a house going up in flames 26 years ago. Little Lion Man, by killabeez. A more Sam - Sam&Dean centric video that shows the beautiful, endless loop of mistakes, choices and mistakes and at the same time how everything is about LOVE.

[x] Melodramatic Fool - vidrec: Little Lion Man [by killa, song] by Mumford & Sons. This is just a stellar Spn fanvid. Just an amazing exploration of the brothers over time, gorgeous, perfect moments chosen. And superb, subtle editing. A fabulous song that has me frantic to find more by this group. it does require downloading the vid, but the dl is fast and I honestly would have dl'ed it anyway after, it's that spectacular. Okay, had to go rewatch it. And god, I just can't emphasize enough how much I want to make everyone I know watch it, even though I know those who don't dig the show won't care. It's just that freaking *good*. It's the sort of video that I'd wish those that make the show could see, so they could see how gorgeous their work is, and how much and deeply it's affected its fans.

[x] Tanoshii na Mono - [Fanrecs] - Supernatural: 7 Fanvids [PG-13]: Hurt by ash48. Wow! I rarely ever cry for fanvids, but this one sure pulled at my heartstrings. Dean. There are some really great moments in this, but two moments I thought that were particularly well done were when the line 'every one I know goes away in the end' came on. Little Lion Man by killabeez. Guh! This video tells its story so well. I didn't need any summary to understand what it was saying. Very nicely done, and excellent song choice! Human & Monster by newkidfan. Holy crap, what an amazing idea! The video effects are perfect to go along with the gorgeous music. I love how the vidmaker used each portion of the song to highlight their relationships. In Seconds by juicy_11. Oh, just gorgeous! I love the flashback feel, and almost slow-motion of it. And the clip of Dean chosen to represent him remembering is perfect. ♥ Protège Moi by charmax. The coloring is so cool in this! I really like the grimness of this video. Like, a lot, and I'm usually all for 'fluffy with a little angst' with my Wincest. Channel Hopping by ash48. THIS IS MADE OF PURE AWESOME! I laughed a lot, but mostly, I was super impressed! I want this to be my favorite Supernatural fanvid now.

The love between the brothers, and all the tension and pain, just shines through this vid - a wonderful portrait of their relationship. Hurt by ash48. Dean's hurting in more ways than one. Gorgeous coloring and selecting blurring that really add to the overwhelming sadness and pain. Evidence of Faith by secretlytodream. Sam character study vid mostly through season 4 and 5, what he did to have this kind of a future for him. A haunting and breath taking Sam vid, with excellent cropping and effects to highlight facial expression and emotion.

[x] I believe cartoon birds braided your hair this morning. - Drive-by Vid Rec, SPN: Fee Da Da Dee, a vid by Ancasta: In the summer, ancastar introduces me to this quirky group called The Guggenheim Grotto. For one of their songs, Fee Da Da Dee, she remarks that there's a Sam vid in there somewhere, she's just not sure what the theme is. Fast forward to season 5, to An getting her theme, and to her making this AMAZING Sam-growing-up vid. Even if you are not a huge SPN fan, but you know and love her vids from Starsky and Hutch, and from Pros, go check this out. She's a master storyteller when it comes to the vid form and this is no exception. She weaves Sam's past, his present, and his tentative hope for the future into a gorgeous 3.36 minutes, with a slower mid section to *die* for. Ancasta's SPN vid.

[x] Yes! Uhm... No? - Two vid recs and some random observations: 'Blade runner' by newkidfan. It's a Merlin/Bladerunner crossover. Stunningly clever editing and merging. 'My son' by oconel. A vid that focuses on Uther's victims. The scenes she picked, the way she edited them together show the harsh contrast between how pleased Uther is with himself and the suffering he causes. The music choice gives it a nervous, edgy feel.

I really adore the song choice here because it's not the most obvious, but cleverly combines both the joy and pain of the show into a lovely and fun overview through season three. Or as she said: I want to grab people on the street and rave at them about vidding as a way to reshape unsatisfactory canon, and about Sam and Dean and all the different layers and parallels and patterns. And this! This is one of the reasons I fell in love with Supernatural in the first year and what is carrying me through each season: Narrators are not always reliable, especially when there's so much love and hurt and pain involved. My Sam and Dean are both fucked up. And they're both trying to simultaneously hold on and let go.

[x] minim_calibre: [Rec] Two vid recs (Supernatural): Hurt, by ash48, which focuses on Dean's many issues in the S4 timeframe and manages to show the many ways in which the Dean who comes back is fractured and has left me spending the last 24 hours wanting to rewatch S4, watching for mirrors and their positioning. (Oh, Dean. Do as I say, not as I do NEVER WORKS.) It's an especially good vid for watching and thinking, yes, this is exactly how and why things shook out on Dean's part. [x] Sawed-Off Recommendations - 113: same day. same frame [fanvideos]: Above and below by counteragent. Sam and Dean. This video does an amazing job of putting side by side Dean and Sam's journey in season four. With its perfect editing, it doesn't shy away from the mistakes they've both made (using clips that some vidders have avoided) and because of that you only want to hug them both by the time you're done watching. Deus Ibi Est by charmax. John. Because if there's someone who needs more love, that someone is John. This video tells John's story in a way that make you feel for him so much. The song is perfect, the refrain in Latin, especially, is inspired in a video about John. Untitled by Luminosity. Dean, Sam. These are actually two videos, one Dean centered and one Sam centered set to the same song they do a fantastic job of tracing back patterns and parallelism between Dean and Sam. Also they're very pretty. Iko Iko by el1ie. Dean. Because it's FUN with a capital F. Dean kicking ass and taking names. Explosions, fights, throwing punches and taking them. The song works surprisingly well for the mood of this vid. Protége Moi by charmax. Dean. Noir applied to fanvideo. This video is just so breathtaking beautiful. Weapon by el1ie. Dean, Sam. Dean as the blunt instrument. I was amazed how actual this video is after watching the first episodes of season five. Human & Monster by newkidfan. Dean/Castiel and Sam/Dean. Two fanvideos se to the same song. The editing is stunning, the black&white and effects make them very pretty and haunting. Although these are very short they pack quite a punch.

[x] Sawed-Off Recommendations - 113: same day. same frame [fanvideos]: The Fifth Circle by Luminosity. Sam and Dean. Sam goes into Hell to look for Dean and gets lost along the way. This is a beautiful post-season 3 video. Watch it for the wonderful editing and the brilliant use of outside source and the overall gorgeous look. Then you will watch it again and again because of the story it tells. Channel Hopping by ash48. This is possibly one of the most awesome and fun videos in the history of Supernatural fanvideos. I'm in awe by the seamless way the vidder was able to find all the right, pertinent clips so that more stories emerged – or more genres in this case: buddy cop show, hospital drama, mystery, action, sci-fi. This is a must for the overall fun and the in-meta on the show. Let It Take You by thandie. Dean&Castiel. This is a different, darker take on Castiel. What if Castiel hadn't chosen Dean at the end of Lucifer Rising? The way this vidder uses the clips to give them a different spin is brilliant as it's brilliant the incorporation of outside source.

[x] Sleep-speaker - Commentaries, Operating Systems & BIRTHDAYS!: I would encourage reading a whole bunch of the commentaries over at vid_commentary ... point out a few I found especially wonderful: Babies commentary by the vidder aycheb is an interesting audio commentary that is very concise and also really interesting in its discussions of themes not often vidded. Clint Eastwood by the vidder bop_radar is interesting because it discusses a vid the vidder has a complicated relationship with and was never entirely satisfied with and yet (in my opinion deservedly) gained a lot of acclaim. Jolene by the vidder nicole_anell. To my shame, I haven't yet had time to comment on this one, but it's a truly fantastic video and the commentary is really good. I have to say, it didn't add all that much to my understanding of the vid (although there were some moments of OOOOH!), but that's to the vid's credit that it manages to convey such a multi-layered story so clearly, that the vid can simultaneously judge Cally and side with her, and make me do the same. This commentary is more like having a gleeful friend to walk through it with you, letting you relive all the awesome bits. So you guys, go do that now.

Bei dem Song muss ich sonst immer an ein anderes Vid in einem anderen Fandom denken, aber solche Gedanken vergisst man hier ganz schnell, denn der Song passt wie angegossen zu diesem Pairing und die Geschichte fängt einen sofort ein. Nicht zuletzt durch die visuellen Parallelen, die bestimmte Szenen miteinander verbinden, zwischen denen man sonst nicht unbedingt eine Verbindung herstellen würde. Hat mir gefallen. [x] don't expect it to tango - the ants are marching two by two...: Freedom Fighters (Choir) by Two Steps From Hell ... I'd search for it on YouTube to see if anyone was using it in other music videos. That was how I stumbled across this video, which is a professional-level trailer for the fourth season of Supernatural. I was intrigued but not hopeful--yeah, I looked for vids using that song all the time but most turned out to be crap--then I actually watched it. This is one of those fan-made trailers that put the real CW-sanctioned ones to shame. No joke, the moment I stopped watching that trailer by emily_reich, I went and bought the third and fourth seasons. It's just that good. I strongly suggest that you watch, even if you're not a fan of the series. It's an excellently crafted video and teases you just enough get you itching for more. Another thing I really enjoyed about it was the connection between clips, not just to the narration but between the images themselves (images of people looking up, hands, light, camera movements that mirror each other, etc). I also liked the homages in the text and, in some cases, even the action to the original Star Trek trailer. Because yes, I AM just dorky enough to have watched both trailers enough times to catch them.

[x] always question answers - Almost Monday Recs: Leverage: Seemed Like a Good Idea At the Time by halcyon_shift VID!!! They are hard to find for this show (hint: anyone have more?). Great, fun team gen vid with excellent timing and some absolutely hilarious moments. Chronicles of Narnia: Red Dust by tehlime (Vid) Edmund, Peter and the war. Makes good use of the WWII footage from the movie and wow do I love the song. Go support a very excellent first time vidder. :)

[x] toftoft - the best vid of all time: YOU GUYS. thingswithwings MADE ME THE MOST AMAZING PRESENT OF ALL TIME. So, you may have noticed that we both love mythbusters. We had had this conversation - well, actually she details it on her post, but anyway, the upshot is, she made a ridiculous, OTT, sappy vid about Jamie and Adam's love, to the Weezer song 'Jamie', with SYMBOLISM in it (their love! It's like electricity which shocks them when Adam has his hand on a Van de Graaff generator and pokes Jamie! it's like tomato sauce that Adam pours over Jamie! But repression and obstacles! They are like heat-protection suits, and falling off a levitation machine made out of a leafblower and a surfboard!) and it is the best thing I have ever seen. I laughed so hard when I watched it that I probably scared birds away across the street. If you're having a bad day - ever - I guarantee that this vid will cheer you up. It has made my life 100% better. It is called, an OTT Mythbusters vid that I found for you on youtube ('you' being ME BECAUSE I AM THE LUCKIEST PERSON IN THE WORLD

[x] I Am Establishing A Position On The Internet - The icon is an accurate depiction of my travails.: apparently there is a slightly distressing trend of making Kuroshitsuji AMVs with Disney songs ... But I am learning not to judge people for that. Also the AMV might be pretty good as a recruiter vid, I am just saying, it is a very fun and non-spoilery demonstration of the series. *cough*

Most of the time, I only watch ones for things I've already consumed because that's really the only way they make sense at all, but today I really have to rec this one that's going around. I've only saw one episode of Twin Peaks in my Television Studies class a year and a half ago, but this vid really captures how fucking creepy that show is. I really would like to see the whole thing. Plus the song is Kate Bush, which, of course, is irresistible to me...

[x] [some kind of title] - vids recs: Supernatural, Star Trek: Supernatural: A Charming Man by giandujakiss (Castiel, Castiel/Dean) One of the few things I broke my self-imposed LJ hiatus for was a new SPN vid from giandujakiss. I love the sense of timing & pacing in this, and internal movement is used so incredibly well. Two sequences that really stood out for me are 1:42-1:51 and 1:59-2:10. Technical construction aside, I loved the mood & tone. Castiel and the angels are darn creepy. I love this darker take on Castiel. It really hammers home that he is just Not Human--he's something else entirely. Juxtaposed with the demons (especially the similar scene blocking of the Crossroads Demon), you get the sense from this that there is really very little difference between angels and demons in the end. I approve! Star Trek (2009): Apple Candy by talitha78. The edge in your affection broke my skin. (Kirk/Uhura/Spock) This video is so achingly beautiful. The editing is somehow delicate, with such a deft touch. Although the POV remains Kirk, the subject change is so subtle and natural that the progression seems to flow seamlessly. That is not an easy thing to achieve. I am so impressed by talitha78's skill here. The shift at 2:28 killed me dead. There is so much emotion and longing and wistfulness and tentativeness wrapped up in this, I think I could watch this a million times and never tire of it. OT3 ♥ ♥ ♥

[x] pslasher - Apple Candy: Kirk/Uhura/Spock Vid and Fic rec: I've just seen Apple Candy by talitha78 and it's so goddamned beautiful I squeed and rewatched like 10 times. It's a Kirk/Uhura/Spock vid and it's achingly perfect with Jim's angst and need and desire for them. This makes me love Jim So Fucking Much for how much he wants the two of them, for how it's just *written* all over his face through the whole thing. Lately Jim is my favorite character from the movie because of the depths he seems to hide behind all the charm and arrogance and BS, and she just captured that SO PERFECTLY here. Gorgeous song choice, too. It's obviously made for OT3 goodness. It's deep, and touching, and thrilling and makes me want them to be together in the worst way. Seriously, this has to be the best threesome vid I've ever seen with a perfect fic to boot, and it reawoke my K/S/U OT3!!!! K/S/M has been my OT3 for months now, but K/S/U was there first, and it's beautiful. I'm shipping Kirk/Uhura/Spock so hard now, flist! Plz to be reccing fic and vids!

[x] Closet Geek - Six Glee Recs (and an honorary mention): Fan Vid - We are Golden. Vid by x_rose_tyler_x, song by Mika. Teenage dreams in a teenage circus. I wasn't familiar with this song before seeing this vid, but the lyrics are so perfect for the Glee kids, and not only does the vid show the character growth so far, the way the vidder intended, but the editing is spot on, making me want to watch it again and again.

[x] Sleep-speaker - I AM HOME! (What I Did, Who I Met, Recs and Assorted Lunacy): everyone should go watch chaila43's latest TSCC vid - Somewhere Over The Rainbow. It's beautiful and creepy, just like the show and really is a song choice that is so obvious in retrospect it's shocking no one else has made it yet. Except I'm glad they haven't because now I get to see chaila's version.

[x] elz: Oh baby, baby: I missed One Night Fandoms: A Tribute to Yuletide by eruthros and thingswithwings when it was first posted, but, oh man, how awesome is this vid? CARE BEARS OMG. And I'm so impressed that not only does it have a clever concept and clips from a zillion different sources, but it's actually a good vid that flows really well from clip to clip and section to section. I can't even imagine how long it must take to find the right footage from so many different sources.

[x] Yellowwolf's Journal - Vid rec: I'm in love! With a music video, yes. A while back, fatedcinderella posted a kick ass trailer to a series she wanted to make, called The fake boyfriend . Pairing: Jared/Jensen, Jared/Chad(Kinda), possible!Chad/Sophia Summary: Jared and Jensen have been friends since they were little. Jared is gay and Jensen...says he isnt. Sophia (one of Jared's other best friends) thinks that Jensen just doesn't realize his feelings yet so she comes up with a plan. She convinces Jared and Chad to pretend to date to make Jensen jealous. That's the plan but as everyone knows...things don't always go according to plan. LOL. and NOW, the first part is up and it's freaking brilliant!! <33 It's just ... I have no words. I love her videos but this one is definitely my favorite one so far. It's just perfect and the story is awesome! The clips she uses are perfect, it looks totally real. And damn it, I want this as a real tv show. lol. Go check it out, it's awesome! <3

[x] Get Your Geek On - Monthly Recs for September - Almost on time this month: Blade Runner by newkidfan. Vidder's Summary: In a cyberpunk vision of the future, man has developed the technology to engineer replicants, beings with magic abilities used to serve in the colonies outside Earth but with fixed lifespans. Arthur Pendragon is a Blade Runner, a cop who specializes in terminating replicants whenever they become a liability. This is newkidfan's reel_merlin entry and it's really a fanvid and fanart rec. She built the movie poster and the movie trailer for Blade Runner, combining the original sources of both the movie and the show seamlessly creating something new. It makes me want to watch Blade Runner again (one of the director's cuts) and want to read the story of Arthur Pendragon, Blade Runner.

[x] don't expect it to tango - the only relevant icon I have for this... also, look out for wee Zac Efron in the vid!: I know it's over a year old now but you know how the internet is, sometimes things just slip past you. If you have a chance--and your mommy isn't looking over your shoulder--you should definitely check out obsessive24's Climbing Up The Walls, a vid about Sam/Dean, Peter/Nathan and River/Simon. I know, you're probably thinking Well, fandom incest, what else is new? but this is interesting because not only does it draw from three different sources (Supernatural, Heroes and Firefly) and tell one similar, cohesive story, it takes a very unflinching look at how such intense incestuous relationships would affect everyone involved. It's weird because the vid is undeniably hot and yet extremely fucked up and thoughtful at the same time. It's one of those rare critiques of the persistence of incest in fandom yet... it's still a part of it. It's a mirror to how horrible it is, or a window that's just been cleaned of all the mud and spiderwebs so you can finally see what's really going on in the neighbor's bedroom. It's literally impossible to catch everything the editor is saying if you only watch it once. There's so much to love on a technical level about this vid. Seeing vids like this WILL spoil you for about 95% of the other fan-made vids out there. Everything in it is planned, everything has a purpose. Nothing is there because the vidder needed to add fluff for time till the chorus, like a good number of the vids you find on YouTube. The stories don't just mirror each other, the very movement in the clips used flow into each other and create something that looks for all the world like it's from the same source. Even when you can't decipher the lyrics (oh, bless you, Radiohead) and even if you aren't familiar with all the sources, the way it's edited enables you to understand completely. Well, I did anyway. My enthusiasm is probably bolstered by the fact that I know each of the characters/sources very well, though I still stand by what I said: if you know the story of one of the pairings, you'll be able to fo
