Vegetarian/Vegan Restaurants near Orlando, Florida

I'm going to be traveling to Orlando, Florida on Saturday, and was wondering if anyone knew any vegetarian-friendly/vegetarian/vegan restaurants in the area. My sister and I are vegetarians, I'm lactose intolerant, and my parents/brother are omnivores. I want everyone to enjoy the food, not just my sister and I - my brother is a little picky so the food needs to be at least somewhat kid friendly. Any suggestions?

We'll probably be traveling to a few beaches that are about an hour away from Orlando, so any restaurant suggestions for beach areas would be great too! :)

Oh, one more thing, the cheaper the price of meals, the better!

Thanks!

Cooking like Clue

So I'm hosting a dinner party for 4 on Thursday. This group always cooks dinner "based" on the movie we watch after. We're watching Clue this week. I want a menu based on all the colors: scarlett. mustard, gree, white, peacock, plum. We're all veggie but not vegan.

I have a blueberry plum dessert that covers the last 2 but I'd love some ideas for the others, preferably a dish for each color. I was thinking a coconut rice and yellow curry but I don't know a green or red that would go well (I don't want ALL curries...)

You guys are so creative so I'd love some ideas.

Thanks!

Spinach?

I've got tons of fresh spinach and no idea what to do with it all. I've already made a huge salad and one of the best smoothies I've ever had (recipe below for all you lovey folks). But, alas, I still have a huge pile of spinach gracing my kitchen.

And ideas on what to do with it?

Advice Needed!

I am getting married in a month, and I am struggling with a decision.

First off, I am a vegetarian(16 years), and my fiance is a pescetarian(2 years). Our families are not, however they respect our choice. Our friends are not, and they also respect our choice. There has never been an issue with it. Some of my cousins are...sort of vegetarian- they don't eat meat, stock or gelatin, but they will "pick" meat out/off food and eat it.(I've stopped trying to figure out why that makes sense to them)

We are having about 150 guests, about 40 of them I have never met. I come from a huge Iranian family, and so about 90 of our guests are from my side..and 98% aren't vegetarian.

Ideally, I would like the food served at my wedding to be 100% vegetarian. I am open to the possibility of a fish dish, if my fiance wishes to have it.
Our parents are against this request because they claim our guests would be unhappy with "nothing to eat".
I have debated and discussed this issue for weeks now and it seems like the only conclusion we can draw is to have a few vegetarian dishes for us, and the rest will be meat based.
Although they are supportive of my choice to be a vegetarian, it frustrates me that they don't understand that I simply don't want to have something I don't believe in served on a day that is devoted to the celebration of our marriage. I am not imposing that everyone needs to be a vegetarian and what they do is wrong or anything like that. I don't believe people will act like they will DIE if they don't have meat product for just one evening meal of their lives. It was argued to me that these people will eat meat daily anyway, so what's the difference if they do it at my wedding....again, the principle of it being done in my celebration is what I do not wish for!
Also, if my fiance and I were Indian, or Hindu vegetarian, and we served vegetarian Indian food to our wedding and invited non Hindu guests...would they even question it?

Is it selfish for me to wish this?

Does anyone have a good recipe for Vegetarian Gyros (preferably not one that's terribly spicy)? I attended the Taste of Chicago last weekend and had the best Gyro, but I can't seem to find a good recipe online or in any of my cookbooks. Thanks, guys!

Scrumptious Sweets

Hey everyone!

I remember having this website in my favourites, but was sad because they were only in the UK. I clicked on the link a few days ago and have discovered that they are now international! Yay!

I just thought I'd share; I did look and didn't see that anyone else had posted this. If they have feel free to ignore.

Fat free food?

Does anyone have any ideas for fat free foods? I'm going to go fat-free for a week or so to see if that clears up some medical issues I've been having, but I'm having trouble finding things that are completely fat-free. Even the fat-free websites aren't, they're soy-heavy and soy has fat in it.
Thanks.

where can I find a chart comparing the average water footprints of omnivores, vegetarians, and vegans in a post-industrial consumer context?  something like this, but a bit more general, and specific to food would be awesome.

First Fake Meat

Hi gang-
Just experienced my first 'fake meat', and feel a little weird about it... Was at the store, and craving something to dip into homemade honey mustard sauce (nummmm), and saw Morning Star's Chik'n Nuggets. on sale. so I caved...
Anyway, so I bake them (smell great) and plate them up with the sauce, and, well, gingerly took a bite. Frankly I wasn't sure what I was in for. Now I know it's been a while since I tasted real chicken, but I swear I had to go look at the box again to make doubly sure I wasn't munching on the real thing (I guess that's the point?). And while they are tasty, I had to tell myself with each bite that it really isn't meat... maybe it was just the breading that tasted familiar, but wow... I think it may be a while before I try them again. Just have to get my mind out of the way I guess! But kudos to Morning Star for getting the taste that close!
Anyone else have a similar experience?
Peace ~nyx

Grilling tips?

Does anyone have experience with Lightlife veggie protein links prepared on a grill? Specifically if it is possible, how long they should be grilled for, and the optimum temperature to grill them at. Thank you!

BBC Article about Vegetarians and Cancer

The BBC is reporting that a study published in the British Journal of Cancer that vegetarians are less likely to develop certain forms of cancer, but not all.

http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/health/8127215.stm

It was an interesting study with a good sized sample population, though it wasn't stated in the article how many of the total group were v*gans. I was, however, disappointed to see that they seemed to be calling fish not a meat, as in this part: "They included meat-eaters, those who ate fish but not meat, and those who ate neither meat nor fish." Don't get me wrong: I have no problem with pescatarians (I'm pretty sure I'm turning my mother into one), but I really wish that they would admit that, if it had eyes, it's meat. Anyway, neither here nor there.

Anyone have access to the full study? I'd be interested to read a bit more.

Another Diet Check

 Hi all!

I posted a bit ago with a sample of what i was eating in a day. I've moved and gotten on a much tighter budget, so I'm hoping I can have some imput in my diet again. Here it goes:

B: Low fat soy yogurt. (can't drink in morning, hurts tummy)
L: Dark salad greens with hardboiled egg, feta cheese, and carrots. Apple juice. Peach.
D: 4 Morning star "chicken"nuggets, bread/roll, grapes. Raspberry spritzer.

If I need snackage, I usually tend towards cheese or peanutbutter.

I guess I'm just wondering how people get all of their servings in during a day. I'm also worried about fiber. What I see above is:

2 dairy (yogurt and feta)
2 vegetables (dark greens and carrots)
2 proteins (Egg and nuggets)
1 grain (roll, which i sometimes cut out)
3 fruits (grapes and apples.)

with sometimes another protein or dairy.

I also tend to have some disordered eating habits, but I think I'm getting sufficient calories for the day? Correct me if I'm wrong, I'm fine with anyone calling me out on caloric consumption. (Note: Not a freebie to be harsh or get dairy angsty.)It totaled to about 1900, which isn't too bad.

I'm a nineteen year old lacto ovo of normal height and weight.

So basically, any ideas or big oh noes! would help me out. I've been doing lots of research and talking to health figures, but I figure a good going over by my veggie buddies can only help!

love from kebe

pseudo-dairy products

Hi everyone,

This question is more for the vegans or non-dairy consuming vegetarians.

I can't eat casein for health reasons, and I don't digest soy products well. I LOVE yogourt though. I've started eating goat yogourt, but I'd like another alternative. Is there any other yogourt-like product? (I'm in Canada if you're going to give me brand names)

thanks!

I really want to go vegetarian.

My stepfather seems to eat primarily red meat. When I lived with my father, I usually ate lean meats and vegetables with every meal. My stepfather et al don't always have ANY vegetables.

I'm debating going vegetarian if only because I don't feel healthy eating the way I currently do. But the problem is, I don't have a job yet. Ergo, can't buy my own good. Should I ask them to buy more vegetables and use that, and drink soy milk to get the protein I need?

I want to do this healthily. Mainly I just feel awful the way I've been eating.

Any advice?

Have you ever given into your meat cravings?

I did a few days ago. I have only been vegetarian for a few months and my SO isn't. He made a dish with ground turkey and it smelled so good. I snuck 2 or 3 bites and immediately regretted it. Not only did it taste exactly like TVP so I could have made it myself, it also made me very sick to my stomach.

Speaking of stomach troubles. My SO who doesn't eat much meat at all now says that he's noticing that hes tummy doesn't feel that great when it eats meat. Is it a coincidence or could it be related to the fact that he only eats it 2-3 times a month instead of 4 times a week?

In one month, I'll be spending two weeks in France. I can speak some basic French, but was wondering if there are any French veg*ns here who could help me out.

I'd like to learn some basic phrases regarding vegetarianism, for eating out and grocery shopping etc.
eg. "Is this vegetarian/Is there meat in this/Is there gelatin in this?".

Can anyone give me some pointers?

just to grumble and look for knowing nods

i have done the best i can to really grill the dad and other pessimistic family members that i will not tolerate them berating our diet to our baby. i have explained it from many angles, most often the point that i do not want her to develop a food complex and to constantly question what's wrong with her diet. this has not stopped the inanity. thus i am writing mostly just to complain and look for fellow parents out there who may have this kind of nonsense and to hear about their solutions or stories.
