Burger King commercial
Anyone see the new BK commercial for the Texas Double Whopper (or whatever its called)?

Basic premise is a guy in a fancy restaurant with a woman, and is served skimpy food.  He breaks into song, and runs across the street to get a BK TDW.  A bunch of other guys join him, and then they run through the streets singing about how it's manly to eat big sandwiches basically.  And then they pick up a minivan and throw it off a bridge into a truck, towed by a bodybuilder who's following a sandwich held by a woman leading the way.

So.  veg*n guys must not exist.  because we all know that you need meat, and lots of it, to be a man.  and women can't eat meat without seeming unladylike.  no, salads and diets are for women, big piles of meat are for men.

not that i eat there anyway, but this is just one more reason to boycott BK.

Ugh. Yea. It's funny how our culture can't escape gendering ANYTHING-- vegetables are gendered as female and meat as male. Which is really interesting on so many levels...

Just wondering, is "veg*n" a typo or is it somehow being politically correct (even though I don't know why someone on a community with "veg" in its title would want to hide veganism)?

from the vegetarian comm info rather than re-typing it all:

"Why do some people write 'vegan' or 'vegetarian' as 'veg*n'"?
This is actually a catch-all term that includes vegetarian and vegan. The asterisk is a wildcard symbol -- computer terminology for a symbol that can stand for one or many characters. In computer terminology the string "veg*n" would match "vegan," "vegetarian," "veg1234an", etc. So, it is a shorter way of saying "vegan and/or vegetarian".

It's a terrible commercial. To add insult to injury, they also took a song that was about feminism (I am Woman-Hear me Roar) and re-wrote it to spew that crap.

the sexual politics of meat covers this in a really interesting way.
This reminds me of the Seinfeld episode where the woman he is dating thinks ill of him because he orders a salad at a steak joint...and then later to "man up" he pretends to eat the lamb she cooks...

Manhood and meat consumption are inextricably linked in our culture, it's insane to me that people can't make the connection (knowing this) between meat consumption and war.

*sigh*
I'm so glad you posted that, we cannot read our media as discourse ENOUGH.

Yeah that's interesting. I wrote something kinda recent about media brainwashing and food. I saw a commercial the other day for chocolate pudding as a good source of calcium...ugh. I think it's funny when people who eat meat/dairy say that I'm brainwashed, yet I can't even remember the last time I saw a commercial for vegetables even. Tv commercials are just crap. Between all the food products with meat and dairy in them, were make-up, beer, SUV and cell phone ads. All shit that no one needs.
