    Bo Kong sizzling steak
Has anyone had any luck recreating the black pepper sizzling vegetarian steak from Bo Kong?  That stuff is like crack to me, but it's too pricy to be ordering it as much as I have!  Any advice appreciated.  TIA.

    A weekend to remember!
Who wants to spend a weekend cooking with Isa Chandra Moskowitz?? She's the author of The Veganomicon, Vegan with a Vengeance, and Vegan Cupcakes Take Over the World! Isa needs a few volunteers to help her while she makes food for the 10th annual Taste of Health festival in Vancouver on the weekend of September 22nd.

Not only will she be doing workshops at the food fair but she's also hosting a wine reception at the Croation Cultural Centre on the evening of Friday, September 26th! She'll be making us tapas! Earthsave is expecting over 200 guests for this event and all of you lovely Vancouver veg*ns are cordially invited.

VeganMania is still at it, don't ya know!

VeganMania is just about halfway through their THIRD (already?) summer season with the Vancouver Farmers Markets!

If you enjoy eating delicious, rich, joyful, sweet, wonderful vegan goodies made with almost entirely organic ingredients, you need to come out to some of our remaining dates and locations! Our next two dates are this Saturday, July 19th, from 9am to 2pm at Trout Lake, and on Sunday July 20th, from 10am to 2pm, in the parking lot of the Kits Community Center.

We've got gluten-free brownies, gluten-free toffee nut bars, lemon bars, russian tea cakes, agave-sweetened cocoa-peanut butter fudge, orange loaf, and PB & J cookies...and much, much more! Oh, and squishy hugs from the Vegan Goddess™ are always free!

Don't forget that VeganMania is also now offering light catering (party platters, private dinners) and fancy custom cakes, too, all by special order.

Hope to see you out there!

When finances allow, my wife and I enjoy going out for a fine-dining experience. Get a little dressed up, head into town, have a fancy meal, and make an evening of it.

However, we have recently decided to go vegetarian. And pretty much all of the places I had bookmarked for our nights out feature menus that are predominantly, if not completely, meat-based. Some may have one or two veggie options, but that's pretty restrictive.

So I am looking for suggestions for upscale restaurants that offer a decent variety of vegetarian dishes. It doesn't have to be fully veg (I have no problem sitting next to some guy scarfin' down a steak), but some sort of broad meatless selection would be nice. Any style of cuisine is fine, any price range is fine, and anywhere in the GVRD Metro Vancouver is also fine. Any ideas?

    Chopper's, Everybody Loves Veggies

I'm always wary of finding veggie options at breakfast type places, but I visited Chopper's over the weekend and they have an awesome veggie plate.  It consisted of beans, veggie sausage or bacon, toast, potato hash with lots of veggies, and eggs (which I gave to my bf because I don't eat eggs).  I was definitely pleasantly suprised, and everything was very reasonably priced.

I also urge all of you to check out Everybody Loves Veggies at the mall across from city hall (on Cambie and 12th).  An all-vegan place at a mall foodcourt is pretty crazy, even for Vancouver, and this place is awesome!!!

    Q. about Dimsum
Hey van. vegans. I'm taking my grandma out for brunch on saturday for her birthday. We'll be doing dim sum at sun sui wah (since it's her fav.), but I'm a little worried about what options I have. I don't want to sit there awkwardly just watching my beloved grandma eat while I decline every dish--it'd be too uncomfortable for her. Does any body have any suggestions on anything that would be kosher for a vegan in a dim sum restaurant???

    thx.

vegan breakfast dt near the cruise ships?
    Hello Vancouver,
I have some friends who will be in town briefly on Saturday morning before leaving on an Alaskan cruise . . . Any recommendations for a place to get breakfast / earlier brunch with a couple of good vegan options downtown near the cruise ship area? I believe they have to be on the boat by 1pm.
    TIA

    newbie enquiry...
    hello vancouver vegans!

does anywhere know where to find the best bargain on:

    -almond butter?
    -nutritional yeast?

i live downtown, but don't mind commuting for a great deal. i'm also trying to avoid the overpriced yuppie chain stores like capers and choices, if possible.

    thanks a bunch.

    Earthsave Dine-Outs
    About the Dine-outs
Twice a month, Earthsave Canada hosts a vegan lunch or dinner at a restaurant in the Lower Mainland. They are usually organized a month or two in advance, and a fee of between $12 and $25 is normally charged, which covers meal, dessert (if applicable), tax, and tip.

About half those in attendance come alone, but no one sits alone. Tables are usually organized in groups of 6 or larger. On average, a quarter of those in attendance are non-members; many are newcomers. Both vegetarians and non-vegetarians are welcome.

In this short video clip, taken in 2007, Earthsave's Dine-Out coordinator Nancy Callan talks about the Dine-Outs.

    Next Dine-Outs:

    Date: Tuesday, March 18, 2008 at 7pm
    Location: Saravanaa Bhavan
955 West Broadway (at Oak Street), Vancouver
    Cost: $14 for members / $17 for non-members
The Saravanaa Bhavan chain of 48 vegetarian restaurants is renowned not only in India in the USA, UK, UAE, Oman, Singapore, Malaysia and Canada. The new Vancouver Saravanaa promises each guest a genuine South Indian dining experience with personal, attentive service combined with exceptionally tasty, always fresh food and classical South Indian music humming in the background. Our meal will begin with Rasam, a South Indian special mild spicy lentil soup. The soup will be followed by Idly, a steamed rice and lentil patty served with chutney, sambar and chilli powder. Then we will sample Vada, a lentil flour doughnut; Rava Kichadi, roasted sooji cooked with onion, tomato, carrot, green chilly and green peas, sautéed with flavoured herbs served with chutney and sambar; a potato bonda, fried potato ball fritters; and Kaima Idly, mini fried idlies flavoured with spicy sliced onions and tomatoes. The main course will include sample sizes of the following dosas: Masala Dosa, a thin rice and lentil crepe stuffed with spicy potatoes & onions; Rava dosa, a cream of wheat and rice crepe; Kara dosa, a spicy rice crepe filled with a spicy stuffing of onions & potatoes, chilli powder & special Masalas. We'll also try Parotta, a multi layered bread diced & tossed with a cauliflower gravy; lemon rice, tamarind rice, and BisIbelabath, rice cooked with lentils and mixed vegetables and eggplant; porial and pickles. Our dessert will be Rava Kesari, roasted Sooji sweetened with sugar & mixed with raisins & nuts.

    Upcoming Dine-Outs:
Date: Monday, April 7th at 7:00
    Location: The District Social House
    13 Lonsdale Avenue, North Vancouver
    Cost: $25 for members/ $28 for non-members
Frustrated by the lack of “cool & stylish” eateries on the North Shore, a team of local restaurateurs created The District Social House, an inviting, intimate lounge that specializes in international tapas. The District, situated at the base of Lonsdale Avenue, just ½ block from the Seabus, serves delicious creations made mainly from seasonal, local, organic products. Although the regular menu offers a number of vegetarian and vegan options, the chef has created a special menu for us to sample. Dinner will begin with a duo of Gazpacho Soups and Pan Fried South Asian Rolls filled with rice noodles, cilantro, and mint and served with a mirin dipping sauce. Next we will try Vegetable Fritters with a chickpea flour batter and topped with a mint and basil drizzle, and Baked Ratatouille (a traditional French Provincial vegetable stew) served with Soft Polenta. A Trio of Dips will also accompany our meal: Eggplant, Spinach & Tofu, and Hummus, served with baked pita bread and corn chips. The final offering will be Fresh Coconut Pudding with soymilk and vanilla, served with Raspberry Sorbet. Don’t forget to check out the impressive beer and wine list!

    veg options at omni restaurants
    *Knock knock....
    Anyone here?

I want to tell you about some great veg options in omni restaurants.

Did you know that Central Bistro & Lounge on Denman does a great veg breakfast? They offer an amazing vegan french toast with berry compote & soy yogurt as well as a a delicious tempeh/potato/veg hash. YUM.

Everyone should know about the excellent Lebanese restaurant Nuba by now. It's kind of like a fast food/cafe environment. A large percentage of their menu is vegan. 2 locations downtown.

Vietnamese subs. Marinated tofu/toasted french bread/veg goodness - only $2.50-$3). Available at every Vietnamese deli I've been to. I frequent the one beside Subway near Broadway and Carolina (one block west of Fraser) and also Ba Le @ Fraser and Kingsway. I actually do not know yet if the bread is vegan.

The best place downtown to get a veggie dog from a street vendor is at southeast corner of Burrard and Robson. The man who owns the stand is very, very sweet. The first time he saw me he squinted his eyes, smiled and said, "Veggie dog." Ha, I guess I do look a bit like a stereotypical veg head. He's given me free drinks a number of times and it's always hard to make him accept a tip. He has really great toppings including black olives, corn kernals, vegan 'bacon' bits, minced garlic.
A Warning: the onions are fried in butter (I keep trying to get him to change to oil) and he will dip the raw dog in the buttered pan before grilling unless you ask him not to.

*Please tell me your favourite "I can't believe I'm eating this at this meaty place" veg options!

    Foundation Food
Hi! Has anyone ever reverse-engineered meals from the Foundation? I hate the service and spelling on the menu so much and never want to go there again but the food is so delicious! Specifically, I want an endless supply of molten tofu and yam dip.

    Save the park!
I'm not sure if this allowed but I figure vegetarians probably like parks.  Well there is a rally this sunday December 9th at noon to protest the transfer of park lands in Pacific Spirit Park for development.

    All we can eat club
    Good Morning!

I need to eat until I want to explode, I'm getting a little tired of sushi and Indian food. Are there any great all-you-can-eat establishments out there that I don't know about?

    Thanks!!

I got directed here as well from the main vancouver community, so my apologies for any crossposting!

Are there any vegan friendly restaurants around the whole BC Place area and not across the Cambie bridge? I don't want to get my out-of-country friends superlost (I don't know Van and outlying areas that well myself to begin with).

And if there aren't, what bus goes over thataways from around Richards street? I found a site that has a ton of places, but they're all over the bridge on the west side.

I'd prefer it be a vegan friendly place, as I myself am not vegan, but anything's fine. I don't want my one friend feeling like she just has to be around for the ride. (As an aside, she loves kimchee, if that helps at all?)

I'm going to be sitting in at Lotusland Tattoo from November 21st till the 27th.

So now is probably a pretty good time to get that sweet ass vegan tattoo you've been waiting for.

(And just so you know I'm not a total hack...check out my website)

Drop me a note if you want to set something up.
