More stumbling to cover for Bruce Allen
The Vancouver Sun now jumps on the bandwagon by printing the entire text of Bruce Allen's justification rant. With VANOC and their friends falling over themselves to wipe this all under the Olympics carpet, the Olympics 2010 carpet itself is starting to look shabby. The foolishly over-long civic strike and the appologetic VANOC are making civic powers in Vancouver look like gang more than government.

I smell the stinking, fetid paws of the APC all over this post.

Wrong. Look at my livejournal. Note the absence of APC lingo, note the far-ranging topics, from ubuweb to harry potter to Liz Claiborne. Judgemental cuss.

As a person who works with poor people, I fucking hate the APC because they lump all poor/homeless people together and under the worst possible light.

That said, I totally agree with this post.

really? could you elaborate a little? I don't know what to think. I've met some people who're very sympathetic to their goals and tactics, and poor/homeless people who feel APC is their only voice in this city. and the only place I've heard (usually vague) bad things about them is this community.

The vast majority of those who are homeless are not seen - they are not in the DTES and they are just wanting to get on with their lives in whatever way they can. They don't want offices trashed, they don't want flags stolen - I remember talking with one homeless woman that the office reminded her of the violence she left behind and the reason she is homeless. The trashing of that office in the name of homelessness really bothered her.

The APC does not articulate what the homelessness issue is about and how it relates to the olympics, and there is no reason for them not to be articulate - there are plenty of resources out there (COHRE report). They have the same goals as a good portion of the rest of us, and the tactic's distract from the message - there are a lot of ways to engage in civil disobedience without inflicting damage (trust me I've thought up a whole bunch of them).

And there are a lot of voices talking about homelessness - there are a lot of groups getting on the government to create affordable housing; we've been able to get the affordable housing program limit raised to $28,000 (and that was very soon after the program was introduced). And anyone who thinks the APC is the only voice of the homeless hasn't been paying attention (povnet.org/ has lots of resources).

For what it's worth, I agree with this assesment of APC, with the addendum - APC acts in a manner that makes it easy to infiltrate by agent provocateurs from CSIS or other police forces - just as happened on Commercial Drive in the 90s when a certain agent started organizing anti-police marches out of La Quena. The restaurant didn't last six months after that.

There's a rich history of this in Canada, even before the October Crisis, and certainly since then. In fact, it's partly what's being hidden from us in the Air India fiasco, I'd bet. Canada is not alone in this, though.

Nevertheless, in all movements, it's the most radical-looking groups that create the opportunities these agent provocateurs find easiest to take advantage of.

I had the unfortunate experience of working for Bruce Allan in the 70s. I was in a band called Burning Ground that was managed by his office.

He was an insufferable prick then. Apparently he hasn't changed.

so believing that people who come to live in a country should adopt our laws and rules is wrong? You your know full well the law of the land before you decide thats the place for you, if your beliefs don't fit with the laws... well you should probably pick a different place. Why should it be our culture that always has pushed aside?

THis will be a rather harsh example, but there are still cultures our there that are cannibalistic, should they choose to immigrate to Canada, should they then get to keep their ways?

Now I know what your saying, "They are totally different things" But where is the line drawn, when is it too far, and who gets to make that call?
