"big sisters" experiences and tv wall mounting?
i've been thinking about getting involved with big brothers/big sisters of canada.

does anyone have any personal insight on this? anything about your experience (as either a big or little sister) that you think might be useful? what sort of stuff would you do with a little sister, besides going to a movie and getting food or going shopping? also, does anyone know if you have to have a car to be a big sister?

i've looked around their website a bit, and it seems like i meet their criteria, so i just want to get a little extra info from people who have participated themselves, as i mull over the idea.

edit: i've got another question. does anyone know of someplace that does quality flat screen tv wall mounting for a reasonable price? i just bought a 42" lcd tv and i didn't realize just how much room it would take up in my fishbowl of a living room. i think my only option is to wall mount it, and i'm sure as hell not going to try tackling that on my own.

i've never done the big sister thing, but my boyfriend used to be a big brother, and he loved it. he used to do all sorts of things with his little brother, mostly basketball, movies, museums. he took him boating once too. they're no longer big/little brothers, but they keep in touch.

i can't say anything about the necessity of a car, though. my boyfriend had a car at the time. i can ask him if he remember whether that was a requirement.

do you know if he had to pay for the activities out of his own pocket?

i'm pretty sure the big sister/brother has to pay for the activities our of their own pocket. i don't believe the organization pays for any of that.

he said that the official rule was that he, as the big brother, was supposed to pay for half the costs while the little brother's mother was supposed to pay the other half. kevin (my boyfriend) thought that this was ridiculous, and paid for everything himself.

I can understand that if the mother's got enough money but often little sist/brothers are in families without a lot.

exactly -- my boyfriend's little brother's family was astronomically poor, which is why my boyfriend wouldn't let the mother pay for anything. personally, i think that if one is looking to become a big brother/sister, one ought to expect to have to pay for all the activities that one does with the little brother/sister.

yeah, that's why i pretty much assumed that the big sibling would be paying the full cost of activities. i would feel weird volunteering for that, and then asking my little sister "so, did you mom give you enough money to cover half of your movie ticket?"

I wasn't implying that the mother/father would pay any of it, I was more thinking of the organization. I guess I assumed they'd have some grants, etc available to them. Thanks for clarifying though.

it's actually easy to mount the TV yourself if you buy the right wall mount. the TV just rests on the mount and you don't actually have to screw it into the wall or anything. as long as you have a friend to help you lift the TV, and a power drill to screw the mount into the wall, and possibly a stud detector, you're all set. :D but my boyfriend is really gung-ho about DIY stuff so I can't really help you with recs for people that will just do it for you, sorry :P

yeah, see i don't even have that stuff you mentioned. and considering how much i spent on the tv, i don't want to screw the mount in improperly or something and have my tv come crashing to the floor. i'd rather pay to have it done properly.
