Sorry if this has been asked before..
Anyone with Shaw internet experiencing complete freezing within five minutes of starting a torrent?

And if you do several they all freeze at simultaneous scheduled intervals.. so you know it's the provider..

I've heard of this problem happening to other people. I don't use BitTorrent, so I can't say for myself.

I wouldn't be suprised if they even limited the amount of bandwidth torrent applicants can use.

Yeah, it seems to be TV shows that they hate the most. Every once in awhile I'll try and get something else and it'll work out fine.. I only have one show at a time though.. and right after I got the last episode of Six Feet Under, they must have put some kind of limiter on my account.. every episode of Lost is now an excruciating, painful undertaking requiring constant restarting.

I used to work at Shaw. I'm assuming you don't have "Lite". If you have regular internet, there's kind of an unwritten 20 GB/month limit; that's when you'll get the warning.

They recently brought in something called "Extreme", which has an explicit 50 GB/month limit for $10 extra. I got it, not so much because I do lots of torrents, but more because I have renters who are sharing the connection and I don't know what they're doing.

Might be something to think about. I don't work for 'em anymore, but I'm still a relatively satisfied customer.

I have Extreme. it's a f'in joke. My internet is so slow.. and I don't download a TON of torrents.. only one per week! and yet it freezes after five minutes. What is the point of paying extra for that.. GRR..

I've been looking for one, but I hear that Bit Torrent is the best. What client do you use?

Is it your whole connection freezing, just your torrent client, or your entire computer freezing?

Are you accessing the internet straight through the cable modem or through a router?

The torrent client. It's like there's some kind of trigger.. after 5 minutes of downloading all the torrents stop simultaneously, and they're all from different sources, so I think it must be the provider. Or maybe some kind of setting in XP or my network card?
I access the internet through a hub.

I use shaw. And often my torrents run actively for hours on end. But there are times when it seems that I can't get one to download no matter how long I wait.

I have no problems with BT on shaw.
BT speeds are based on client availability so you will see the speeds jump up and down and freeze from time to time.

no, but they all freeze simultaneously at calculated intervals. I can have 3 torrents going on from different providers and they ALL freeze after 5 minutes. It's definitely something Shaw has going on. Do you live in Vancouver proper? I heard they were doing some kind of test bottlenecking in Vancouver.. my friend in Surrey is fine.

A whole season of a TV show now takes almost a week for me to DL. WTF! Seems like Shaw put a restriction on my account but I have not gone over 20g in a month, the only one I did this month was maybe 8g. Plus, I did not get a letter.

I think they've taken the passive-aggressive approach and just started doing the bandwidth throttling to users with high download rates.

I haven't gone over 50g (my limit with Extreme) since July. I haven't even gone past 30g. And still i get this.

shaw purposefully throttles torrents.

there was a big thing about it online a while back but the only mainstream place to cover was the cbc i think. and they got the prez of shaw to admit it on camera.

i'd find you links but I'm lazy. googletime

Change your default port for BT downloads,
it makes a world of difference,

Recently discovered & verified - Some ISPs are throttling the traffic on the BitTorrent default ports. Changing the ports from the default range to a different range (in the 50000's) changed downloading from a trickle (1-2 kB/s) to The Way It Should Be (up to 330 kB/s on a 3000/256 connection). This almost seems unethical, but ISPs have probably taken note that BitTorrent traffic has become over 50% of Internet traffic by some surveys. BitTorrent also saturates the 'slow' side of asymmetric connections with it's uploading, which upsets the 'surf and download' usage the cable modem providers are expecting from their typical user.
