Passport lineups

  • Jul. 20th, 2009 at 12:28 AM

Has anyone gone for a passport renewal recently? Any tips or observations? My forms and photo are ready and I just need to find the right day to miss a few work hours for the occasion. How long should I expect I'll be at the passport office?

Mine doesn't expire till December but I'm planning possible US trips in both the fall and winter. So I'd rather be without it now for a few weeks than when l really need it.

Thanks!

Pet hospitals in East Van

  • Jul. 17th, 2009 at 7:52 PM
What are some pet hospitals in east Vancouver open at this time?

I have cat who's pawing at his shaking jaw. No blood, but thick saliva.

EDIT: Thanks for the suggestions. We went to the ER Hospital on 4th Ave.

Room needed from September - January

  • Jul. 17th, 2009 at 11:39 PM
Hey!

I am looking for a room in a shared apartment from September '09 to January '10. I am an art student from Berlin doing an exchange year at the Emily Carr University. I figured before going on to craigslist I'd give it a try here!

So if anyone knows nice people who have a free room that has a window and maybe even a bed, please let me know!

Thank you.

Where to find a sewing box

  • Jul. 16th, 2009 at 8:12 PM
I'm looking for a big, good quality sewing box (the kinda box you put thread, needles, etc. in). So far, I've checked Zellers, Wal-Mart, Fabricland, and Michael's, and all I came up with were either big and poor quality (i.e. it was falling apart as I was trying to take the top tray out), or small and good quality.

As per my usual "where to find" requests, bonus points if it's in Langley, Surrey, Tri-Cities, or Maple Ridge areas.

Thanks

Getting Married in Las Vegas

  • Jul. 16th, 2009 at 7:18 PM
Has anyone here gone to Vegas for their wedding?  We're going there to avoid all the hassle of having a traditional wedding and one thing we haven't been able to find information on is the license.

Is there some sort of paperwork we're supposed to bring with us there?  We want to make sure the marriage is recognized here when we get back.

I don't know if it's google or poor government sites or just plain bad searching skills that's keeping this information from me.

Thanks for any help.

Looking for Camping Supplies

  • Jul. 16th, 2009 at 3:57 PM
Hey there Vancouver! I'm heading out for a week of camping next month but I lack a lot of the supplies necessary. If you have any of the following items and wouldn't mind clearing them out of your house for some cashy money, give me a shout. I can even come pick it up!

- Folding cot
- Small folding table (ie: 4ft x 2ft max)
- 2 burner (preferably propane) camp stove with wind guards
- Coolers
- Collapsible water jugs (5 gal preferably)
- Camping pots/pans
- Tarps! (preferably the heavy duty silver kind and at least 10' x 20')
- Heavy duty tent pegs (at least 1ft long)
- A decent 1-3 man tent (I've got a cheapo 1 man but I'm afraid it may not survive the trip)
- Bungee cords & nylon rope
- Anything else you've found handy in the past and wouldn't mind parting with

Any BC/Canada student loan experts here?

I can't seem to find detailed explanation on BC student aid website about this, just a very breif explanaton that left me with more answers.

I am currently in school, and due to some issues with one of the classes I have to drop it, but this will drop me below full-time status.

Now does doing this like cause really bad things to happen like not being able to get a loan in the fall?

For the record I have never dropped to part-time from full-time while on student loans, this is the first time.

(For the record its open learning via Thompson Rivers, and I emailed the financial aid office there just haven't heard back yet.)

hunting plants in vancouver

  • Jul. 16th, 2009 at 1:57 PM
Hello !

I live in a house, with several roommates. We decided to spend some time together this and next weekends. Most of us want to go hiking, to parks, etc. So it seems like it will be a nature theme trip.

I want to choose a nice place to go to too. I am hoping to find a place with a lot of gardens.. interesting flowers and plants you can pick and take with you (like one flower, not a whole bush). I want to dry them and put them in my room. Can anyone suggest any places for me? It can North Vancouver, West, East, Richmond, Burnaby, et al.I heard about the Bloedel Floral Conservatory at Queen Elizabeth Park. It sounds really nice, but since it's a conservatory I assume you can't pick flowers.. even if they are already on the ground.

I'd slap my boyfriend but shit splatters.

  • Jul. 15th, 2009 at 8:55 PM
Sorry about the "graphic" title but yeah. my boyfriend and I are pretty much done with and since the relationship was pretty long term, our circle of friends, yeah. Looks like they're going to side with him because they share more in common with him than me.

Sooooo.... since I work so damned much and my best friend flaked out on me because she has baby rabies... where and how in this city is a good place to meet childfree thirtysomethings?

I'm not looking to date. I'm just looking for possible options to meet new friends in this hellhole of an unfriendly city. Is that even possible any more?

Give me meat without the sugar, darlin'

  • Jul. 15th, 2009 at 6:38 PM
OK, Vancouver. My house is filled top to toe with the kind of hormonal disorder that means NO SUGAR, no starch, and lots of needles. Whee!
This means any kind of snack food is gonna have too many carbs for any of us. Even nuts are iffy.
Except beef jerky, right?
You'd think that beef jerky would totally be available off the shelf in a sugarless variety, and therefore the perfect snack for an entire tribe of organ failures.
I mean, it's BEEF JERKY, right?
WRONG.(What were you thinking, really? NOTHING is available without sugar anymore. HUMMUS has sugar in it.)
So yeah, there are some websites that will ship it, but it's fucking BEEF JERKY, not goat bukkake hentai. I shouldn't need a fucking customs broker and a credit card to get MEAT that doesn't have SUGAR in it.
Honestly.
This is Vancouver, Hippie Haven of the Great MeatLoving North. There has to be some little Gulf Island beef rancher coming to farmers' markets with something that I can pick up, or even order custom in quantity.

Please don't send me to recipes. Yes, I know it's easy to make. Lots of things are. I make my own clothing, wine, furniture, and even fucking KETCHUP (because THAT don't come sugarless either, sweetheart. Not even the hippie shit.)
I've gotta draw the line somewhere, and meat processing is it.
And don't give me the Monty Python Spam Routine about this stuff you know that's "not got MUCH sugar in it." It's MEAT, OK? I don't think I'm being excessively picky here, and yeah, it's a medical issue.

Tips on any other sausage, pepperoni, etc that doesn't have sugar or starch fillers, yet is available locally would rock.
Shout out for Rio Friendly Meats on Hastings near Nanaimo who have at least six different kinds of tasty sausage with neither sugar nor wheat/gluten/starch, and will make up a batch of their other recipes custom for you for a twelve-pound minimum order.
Alas, they get their jerky and pepperoni from offsite suppliers who use sugar. No portable snackety happiness there, not for my family, though the rest of you glucovores should head over there and chow down.
Anybody?
ETA: Recommendations on best pork rinds and where to find them?

Reviews on a bank

  • Jul. 14th, 2009 at 1:43 PM
I just read about Citizens Bank of Canada in the newspaper & am wondering why I've never heard about it before. I checked out their website & it almost sounds too good to be true. Does anyone have any experiences with them, good or bad?

TIA!

cheesily romantic hotel rooms

  • Jul. 14th, 2009 at 12:49 AM
Vancouver, help. I'm looking to book a hotel room -- one of the really nice sorts of ones you'd retire to after a special night with someone you love, if you get my drift.

The only must-have is a jacuzzi soaker tub. Mirrored is a bonus. Also a bonus if it's actually located in the bedroom.

Cheesy is not a burden -- we spent our honeymoon night in the ultra-cheesy 'Roman Room" at the Best Western Coquitlam. Seriously. But hey, it was wall-to-wall-to-ceiling mirrors and boasted a gigantic tub right beside the bed, which was freaking awesome and campy and ridiculously fun.

Has anyone else been to such a place?

Clip on earring findings

  • Jul. 14th, 2009 at 12:06 AM
Does anyone know where to find clip on earring findings?

I tried Claire's, Icings and Ardenes... but they usually come in a pack of 2 pairs and each pack ALWAYS have a gold pair. I only have silver earrings so it seems like a waste, especially since it's about $4-6 per pack.

I checked the Micheal's website and they don't seem to have it... I'm going to call tomorrow to make sure, but in case they don't have it, I thought I'd ask here.

In case you don't know what I'm talking about, here are some pictures:

Preferably these kinds...

But these ones are good too.

Thank you!

What's the deal with Folk Fest this year?

  • Jul. 13th, 2009 at 10:13 PM
Does anyone know about the merchants on the fence for the Folk Fest next weekend? I know there will be a "Bazaar" whereby the organizers have charged each merchant $200 to sell their goods, but will people without access to the actual show be able to browse the merchandise?

Thanks!
