July 5th, 2008

I just got home from the Las Vegas Westercon where I saw Bill Boyde, a long-time volunteer for VikingCon and participant in BSFFC events.  He was involved in a very serious car accident on the way to Westercon in which the driver, Roberta Carlson, was killed, and one of the other passengers lost half of his fingers.  Bill and the other two passengers in the car survived with just scrapes and bruises but they are all very shaken up.

Bill has very generously charged everyone's plane tickets home to his credit card.  Bill isn't rich, though, so a fan fund has been set up to help them with these expenses.  PayPal donations can be sent to wboyde@eskimo.com.  The money will be used to pay for the group's travel expenses home and any leftover funds will be donated to Roberta's family.  If you can help, please do so.  Thank you!

I'll pitch in as soon as I get my act together (in the next week or two).  I'd like to be running a session or two of Twilight Imperium if there's room for  that.

Norwescon 31

Add to Memories Tell a Friend
ValhallaCon had a promotional table during Norwescon 31, the largest sf convention in the area. I spent a little time at the table, and really enjoyed meeting everyone who stopped by, giving support or advice for our upcoming event.

I don't have any stats (new pre-supporters, mailing list additions) to report, but I was impressed with the number of folks who shared the burden of sitting at the table. I was worried that it would be all Mike, all the time. (It was mostly Mike, of course, but I suspect he was worried too.)

I took a break from VikingCon trivia entries in order to keep the gaming day entry recent, and not buried.

VikingCon tidbits

Add to Memories Tell a Friend
There was no VikingCon in 1981.

VikingCon VIII (1987) was held Easter weekend. It had a large guest list (six GoHs), ample programming (four full tracks), a color program cover (featuring Julia Lacquemont artwork), and wasn't as well attended as planned (maybe 400 people, but seemingly planned for close to 600 people). Not a failure, but it led VikingCon planners to conclude Easter was right out for future events.

I laugh now, considering Norwescon (3,000-ish members) has been held Easter weekend for some time now.

Vikingcon 15 (1994 -- and yes, it was spelled that way, with the lowercase C that year) featured two main GoHs: George RR Martin and Connie Willis both attended.  Alan M Clark was AGoH.

VikingCon VII (1986) coincided with a Dr. Who Festival, where members had the choice of attending one or the other event, of (if I recall correctly) a discounted combined membership.

VikingCon X (1989) featured Dr Robert Forward as GoH. Subsequently, he gave a lecture as a promotional event for VikingCon 14 (1993), and returned as SciGoH for VikingCon 17 (2000). In all instances, Dr Forward wore a very bright white suit, embellished by psychedelic-colored vests made by his wife, and, causing some concern, ate sloppy foods, such as spaghetti.

VikingCon IV (1983) was the first to have a program book cover printed in color. This was especially significant, as the cover art was from Elfquest, in honor of AGoHs Wendy and Richard Pini.

VikingCon 13 (1992) was the only one with a "theme," and featured the longest main guest list of any of the VikingCons.
GoH: Lucius Shepard
SciGoH: John G. Cramer
EdGoH: Ellen Datlow
HorrorGoH: Edward Bryant
AGoH: Margaret Organ-Kean
SpecGoH: Freeman Dyson
TM: Greg Cox
The theme was horror (for the thirteenth con).

So are the dates for the convention locked in stone? (ie contracts signed) The reason I ask is that I just noticed that it is scheduled for the same weekend as PAX (an electronic gaming convention held in Seattle, had over 35K attendees last year). I would really love to attend both, but I have a feeling I will be attending PAX instead.

VikingCon tidbits

The 1993 Hugo award for best novel was shared between A Fire Upon the Deep by Vernor Vinge and The Doomsday Book by Connie Willis. This was of VikingCon interest, as Vinge had just been GoH at VikingCon 14 (1993), and Willis had just been announced as GoH at the upcoming VikingCon 15 (1994).
