Protection after placebo week
I am on HBC. Last week was my placebo week, I got my period as usual, and today (Sunday) I took the first pill of my new pack. My boyfriend and I are in a long distance relationship, and he's coming to visit me on Saturday. Am I fully protected from taking the pill Sunday - Saturday right after not taking pills during placebo week? We don't use condoms for a variety of reasons (it hurts me, and yes we've both been tested), and I'd really like to be confident in my protection considering its my damn birthday and I want to sleep with him!

Thanks for advice.

You're protected *every day* from pregnancy (placebo week included) as long as you take 21 days of active pills followed by no more than 7 days of placebo pills.

In other words, as long as you'd taken three weeks of pills before your placebo week, and you then took one week of placebo pills, you'll definitely still be protected from pregnancy on Saturday. The pill is designed to be used as the sole form of pregnancy protection, and as long as you take the pill correctly (same time every day, don't let the pills get overheated, aren't on antibiotics, don't have digestive problems, aren't overweight... am I missing any? ;) ), you don't "need" back up like a condom anytime during your "cycle" -- you're still protected throughout your placebo week!

As long as you have taken 21 active pills before your placebo week, you'll be fine (:

You're protected both during and after your placebo week.

Hormonal birth control is designed to offer continuous protection -- it's as effective during the placebo week as at any time. What it essentially does is put your ovaries to sleep, and that hormone-free week is not long enough for them to "wake up" and start ovulating again, so you remain protected. As long as you stick to an appropriate pill-taking schedule (21 or more active pills followed by no more than seven pill-free days), you're always protected.

You might find this section of the Vulvapedia entry (and this one, too) helpful in explaining how it all works. :)

as long as you've taken no less than 21 actives and had a placebo week of no more than 7 days, you're protected the entire month.
