WellButrin SR and having difficulty reaching orgasm
I've always had a hard time having an orgasm during sex... until I met my current boyfriend about a year ago. I had an orgasm almost every single time while I was on top, no joke. I couldn't believe it! We broke up about a month after we had first met and then he contacted me in July of this year and we've been back together ever since. I started taking WellButrin SR (anti-depressant) back in March of this year. Ever since then, it is very difficult for me to have an orgasm during sex now. Nothing else has changed and so it would make sense, that the pill has somehow effected my ability to have an orgasm. I can have one if I use my vibrator but it takes much longer and I can only have a clitoral orgasm rather than a g spot orgasm.

I went off of it for about a month and a half... but didn't notice a difference as far as reaching an orgasm and I decided to go back on it because I was started to notice a big change mood wise.

I don't know what to do. I feel like this pill is helping my depression but the orgasm situation is starting to get on my nerves. I get so close but haven't actually had one during sex in almost a year. I'm not sure if switching pills would solve the problem because I believe most anti-depressants affect orgasms. I specifically asked my doctor to put me on a pill that was inexpensive and one that didn't increase your appeite because I already have problems with my weight which is the reason why she put me on WellButrin.

Any ideas or thoughts? Is there anything I can do to make it easier for me to have an orgasm?

From what I understand, Wellbutrin is less likely to give sexual side-effects than most anti-depressants. In many cases, it takes trying several drugs before you find one that works well for you, so if you've already found that Wellbutrin helps your depression, switching might be more trouble than it's worth. Maybe you can incorporate your vibrator (or another vibrating toy like the one described here: http://www.mypleasure.com/education/sexed/vibrating_erection_rings.asp) into sex.

I know and that's what confuses me. I must be one of the few that experience sexual side effects with WellButrin. In any case, I only plan to be on it till March which will be a year. I feel better but doctor said I should be on it for at least a year. Thanks for the suggestion!

That's interesting! I suffered from sexual side effects from Zoloft (in three years I had maybe five orgasms total?) but while I was on Wellbutrin SR it was like a total 180.

I second the vibe motion, but for me even that didn't help much at the time.

Good luck, OP.

That is so weird. Makes me feel like there's something wrong with me now, lol. My doctor had even told me that it was odd that I was having problems reaching orgasm because when most people are having problems, they switch them to wellbutrin.

could there be something emotional linked to the diappearing orgasms? TO do with the fact that you guys broke up for a while? Orgasms can be incredibly psychological.

just my 2 cents!

I don't have any personal experience with this, but a close friend of mine who has struggled with depression said that when she was having a really difficult time (and was on medication) she couldn't orgasm at all. I don't have any advice, just wanted to say that you're totally not alone. :)

Thank you, that's good to know :). I believe my depression was totally circumstantial and all the issues that were causing me problems, have now been solved and I even told the doctors about this but she recommended that I stay on some type of anti depressant pill for a total of one year. So really, about 4 months left.

wellbutrin is actually prescribed to women with sexual dysfunction to increase sexual desire.

i was on it for about a year. the last three or so month of that year i was with my new boyfriend and my libido was doing well.. i went off of the wellbutrin, and my libido remained pretty much exactly the same.. all the way to today, like a year later. so i personally didn't notice a change in sex drive due to the medication

there is useful discussion in the wikipedia article on wellbutrin which mentions sexual dysfunction as related to the drug: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wellbutrin_xl

hope you feel better. maca root, epimedium, tribulus fruit, sarsaparilla --these all are herbs that stimulate sex drive/ maybe you can find one of them in capsule form on vitacost.com or some such website ..or burn some sandalwood/myrrh/rose/patchouli/amber incense (all aphrodisiacs) here's a link to a book about herbalism and sexual arousal http://www.amazon.com/Botanica-Erotica-Arousing-Body-Spirit/dp/0892817909

See, my sex drive is high and has always been high... it's the orgasm part that I'm having problems with :/. Thanks for all of your suggestions. I'll look into them!

I am on Wellbutrin SR too. 150mg twice a day.

I did notice a drop in orgasms however, even after going off the meds for a month and going back on again, it hasnt changed. My thoughts are that its the depression itself, notthe meds. Even though i am feeling much much bettr than i was before i went on them meds, I still have some issues. I think that the depression itself changes the body and makes things different.

Dont worry about the orgasm, and just enjoy the sex.The orgasms will happen again when they are good and ready. Drink more water, it seems to help me out at least some in that department. It cant hurt at the very least.

I'm on a generic brand of Wellbutrin, Budeprion (150 mg/day). I've had no sexual side effects at all, but the Lexapro I was on prior to this med KILLED my libido. Totally, completely depleted it. My only suggestion is to wait it out until you see your doc again to ask for a different med, or if you're like me and refuse to wait, schedule another appt. to consult with him/her about switching to a different brand early. Good luck. :)

I don't take Wellbutrin, but I do take Zoloft. I will tell you that if I try to have sex within 8-12 hours after taking it, I cannot orgasm. So I either have sex before or after that window. I take it at night, so that generally works well since I'm not a morning sex kinda girl.

Well I'm supposed to take 2 pills a day, at least 8 hours apart so I don't think I would be able to do that :/

Totally understood. I was completely unable to orgasm when on Paxil & Wellbutrin...it drove me nuts!! I started to regain the ability slowly a bit after I came off it, but it probably took a year to get back to normal. (I was on antidepressants for about 2 years.) But, I've heard that Paxil is especially nasty, so maybe Wellbutrin on its own won't be so bad?

My psychiatrist said that he'd heard of Claritin reversing these effects in some people, but I don't have any medical research to back that up. *googles* Ah, wait, here's a blurb -- not research, but something else confirming the same sort of thing:
http://blogs.webmd.com/sexual-health-sex-matters/2006/08/part-2-ssri-antidepressants.html
It may be worth talking to your doc to see if he/she would let you try something like this.

Whatever happens, good luck -- I know how frustrating this is. >_

When I was on prozac I couldn't orgasm at all, but Wellbutrin did right by me.

I wonder if switching to generic or Wellbutrin XL would help? Is it linked to your dosage?
