Hi,
Where would one go on the Friday's night in Waterloo (Cambridge/Guelph/Toront) if one breaks their arm? In ER they just gave 4 painkillers.
Thanks! |

Note: the set is work safe, although quite steamy.
Click the image for 59 more images from a production of Les Liasons Dangereuses by Kitchener-Waterloo, Ontario local theatre group KWLT. Locals are highly encouraged to go see this excellent show, about love, sex, trust and betrayal. Excellent acting throughout.
Technical details I shot the entire production during the first dress rehearsal. D200, stage lighting only. All at ISO 400. Primary lens was the 18-200 zoom, which is my main stage lens due to the image stabilizer. Some shots with the 50mm, and a handful with the 10.5 fisheye. I shot 2100 exposures, 18GB of data. I used ACDsee Pro for culling, Bibble Pro 4 for post. From first shot to upload of the final set was less than 24 hours. If I'd had more time for this, there are some things I'd touch up but on the whole I'm happy with the set.
N.B. you can hire me to take shots like this for you or your group. |

I wrote web2.0collage, a browser history sniffing collage generator in scheme. Web2.0collage is designed to graphically illustrate just how easy it is for sites to determine what your browser history is. When you visit the site it sniffs your browser history, and creates a collage of the (safe for work) sites that you visit. It is an interesting application of potentially scary technology (imagine a job application site using this to screen candidates). Ideally, given some time in my schedule, I'd like to make it a bit more user friendly and robust so that I could perhaps show it to the general public to increase awareness of privacy issues on the web.
The code, while not good since I was learning how the plt-webserver & imagemagick bindings worked at the time, is available under the agpl. A few days back it hit the front page of slashdot, causing some less than fortunate scaling issues to be discovered. Hatguy & myself managed to fix them (sort of) without too many interruptions :p. It now uses stateless web servelets (thanks to a patch in plt scheme :)). It is currently on a few other places (like gigaom/nyt) and being the hobo that I am, I'm trying to see if I can get the story up on digg ftw :)
If you run into any bugs with it (which is likely) or have suggestions I'd love to hear them :)

» (No Subject)
Hey Waterloo folks,
I hate to do this because I know it gets really annoying... But has anyone taken ANTH 320 - Studies in Hunter-Gatherer Archaeology? I had a look at the site that someone linked a while back... UW Live CourseSelect? (http://www.uwlive.ca/courselect/courses/ANTH/320/) But no one has posted about it... I'm mostly interested in how much work the class will be. I'm not looking for a bird course but not looking for a course that have tons of homework either (since it will be an extra course).
Thanks!

I've noticed that the flags around campus are flying at half-mast.
Okay, I know Michael Jackson was really popular, but this has got to stop.

» It's not a statutory holiday YET
I am in the SLC all the time, and constantly irritated by the antics of the SLC Tim Hortons. They don't have iced coffee, even though even crappy little gas station Timmy's have iced coffee. They don't take the gift/reward cards that other locations do.
The latest: they closed at 4:00 p.m. today. Tomorrow is Canada day. Today I wanted to procure Timbits for my 5:30 meeting, but I suppose they don't want my business.
Yeah. 24 hours. Oh baby. I know in the grand scheme of things, this isn't a big deal. But I'm tired of on-campus business thinking they're allowed to be terrible just because they have a captive audience.

» UW gets a new student!
CBC News: 'Bathtub girl' killer gets early release for university studies
And guess what university she's enrolled at?
"She will go to a halfway house in Barrie, Ont., and from there she will be allowed to take online courses with the University of Waterloo where she has been awarded a $2,000 scholarship."
The reason given for the early move to a halfway house:
"The 22-year-old who was given early release was a minor at the time of the crime. ... The Crown prosecutor in the case described the 22-year-old as a model prisoner and a straight A student. Court documents say she has exceptional intelligence and has "earned the privilege" of early release."

» Econ with Larry Smith
Hi all,
I was wondering how I can check when Larry Smith is teaching which econ.
I want to take ECON101 in winter 2010, but might change my plans if he's not teaching ECON101 that term. According to this site he isn't, but is there a place where he actually states what he's teaching?
Thanks!

» Writers
Hey, quick question - are you all mathies? Are you engineering students, science students, or, etc.? Are any of you writers? I'm not an English student, but writing is my passion, so I assume that even though the majority of spoken voices at this school are math/engineering students, some of you MUST be breaking the stereotype of not being able to write. Some of you must like writing, right?
Maybe not. Forty years ago, the Beatles asked the world a simple question. They wanted to know where all the lonely people came from. I think that those people are writers, specifically me, because I can't find anyone else here that writes! Have you ever been in the midst of writing a dramatic scene in your novel-length piece and tried to bounce ideas off an engineering student that couldn't care less about writing? It's not pretty!
So. Show yourselves. I want writing friends.

» uwangel and browsers
For anyone taking courses on uw-angel and using Google Chrome, assignment submissions fail silently - that is, uw-angel will act like the submission went alright but nothing actually gets submitted. Luckily for myself, I double-checked the submission and was surprised to see an empty submission. Unluckily for myself, the number of submissions for my course was capped at the very reasonable number of "one", and I had to resolve that issue with the TA.
In any case, I was informed by tech support that "At the present time the ANGEL software is only compatible with Firefox on a MAC, or IE/Firefox on a PC. This is a constraint imposed by the vendor and not the University. Hopefully, in the future they will expand their browser base."
Just a heads up!

» course outlines now required
So in an usual step of waterloo doing the right thing, Imprint tells me that course outlines are now required, with certain mandatory information, and some other rules: http://imprint.uwaterloo.ca/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=3833&Itemid=55
one of the other rules is that they have to be distributed within a week of classes starting. I'd say they need to go one step farther and say that they must be published a week *before* classes start, online. And anyone should be able to look up the current course outline for a course that they are thinking about taking in a future semester to aid in planning

» Bachelorette Ideas
I'm throwing a bachelorette party in Waterloo next weekend. It's a central location, but none of the people attending, myself included, live in or have lived in, Waterloo. The bride-to-be is looking for something different than the typical night of going to a random club with a veil or bride t-shirt and getting drunk.
We did have a spa that did home parties booked, but they just went out of business, which is why I'm scrambling the week before. I would appreciate any ideas for things to do in Waterloo for a night, for a group of 8-10 24 year olds. Shows? Comedy clubs? Martini bar? Unique Waterloo thing? Something you enjoyed at a bachelorette? Thank you!
