Subject:the whole MS vs. PhD thang
Posted by:ohmiee.
Time:9:37 am.
Hi everybody!

So, I just finished my first year at UW and I'm coming from this program (biostatistics) where the first year is the same for everyone (course load, preliminary exams, etc.) I'm currently a MS student but now could make the case to switch to PhD.

I'm a little weirded out because there are 5 PhD students for every MS student. Why do you think it is? Does a MS from UW even look good or do they expect you to get a PhD there? Does UW just push out a lot of PhDs because it's a research institution?

Don't know if any of you all have advice to weigh in on based on your own experiences :)

Subject:Bioc 440 vs 405
Posted by:whyhelloyou.
Time:11:21 pm.
Hi, I'm starting at UW this fall, getting my MS in Toxicology.

Can anyone compare BIOC 440 and 405 for me? I've taken biochemistry before so I'm somewhat prepared. If I decide to stick around for a PhD I'd need the 440 sequence, but I'm not actually planning on that at the moment--wondering if it's worth it to keep my options open.

Thanks!

Subject:Really, I just care about your safety...
Posted by:moonbabymandi.
Time:2:07 pm.
I've posted something similar about buses in the past (see here), but after witnessing someone almost get creamed yesterday I feel the need for a friendly reminder. :)

I don't have a car, so like many UW students I bus everywhere. I totally understand the feeling of frustration and despair that comes from just missing your bus. There have been more times than I can count where I ran to catch a bus only to have it drive off. I understand I'm lucky that my buses come every 15-30 minutes during normal hours because there are some buses that come every hour (or even just a couple times a day)... But people need to understand the appropriate method for catching a bus.

You can run, shout, wave your arms, hit the back side of the bus (although some drivers would prefer you didn't do this, plus you'll just get your hands dirty), or try to get someone waiting at the bus stop to tell the driver to wait.

You should NEVER (ever ever ever!) run in front of the bus. I can't believe how many times I've seen people do this. If you are going to cross in front of a bus, I would suggest being at least 20-30 feet in front of a bus that is stopped and just NEVER cross in front of a moving bus. I don't even cross in front of buses at crosswalks, I just wait for them to pass. I do this because the drivers cannot see you.

Yesterday a girl at the Health Sciences stop tried to catch a 65 by running directly in front of the bus after it had already started to pull away. She was probably three to five feet from the bus. Fortunately she cleared the bus and made it to the sidewalk, but the bus pulled away anyway.

Do you know why the bus pulled away?.. because she just about caused that bus driver to squash her like a bug. Many bus drivers say that all those near accidents with pedestrians are very worrisome. So if you run in front of their bus, they will not let you on. Unfortunately, they don't always let you know that they aren't letting you on because you ran in front of their bus. In the past I've seen some bus drivers yell out the window at the pedestrian, but most of the time they just angrily drive off leaving the pedestrian to think that they just missed their bus because the driver didn't see them.

It’s much better to be late to wherever you’re trying to go than to be hit by a bus. So please, next time you’re thinking about stepping in front of a bus or trying to catch one, think again. Thank you!

Does anyone have experience living in a studio or one bedroom apartment in U District? I am considering Avenue Apts, L and P and Tanya Lynn apts. Anyone have a good experience or a recommendation for what landlords/ buildings to avoid?

Subject:Film Scanners
Posted by:mechagodzilla12.
Time:1:02 am.
Does anybody know if non-Art Majors can use the film scanners in the Art Dept. computer lab?

Or, barring that, are there any other student-accessible film scanners on campus?

Thanks!

Subject:Parking :(
Posted by:malicious_pengy.
Time:3:43 pm.
So, I read the one entry about parking in the memories, but...

Does anyone have any tips on parking in the U District? Is there anywhere at all I could park for free? (Yes, that sounds pretty stupid.) I know Greek Row is constantly full during the school year, but is it the same way during the summer? Is there anywhere to park??

And, after giving up on free parking, do any of the apartments around UW rent extra spots for relatively cheap?

Subject:Independent study?
Posted by:soup_lover_9.
Time:2:58 pm.
I was wondering if anyone knows if it's possible to do an independent study for COM 468 (Journalism Ethics).

I'm expecting to graduate next Spring and I need to take it next year for my major. My problem is that it's only offered only one time next year (Autumn quart)  and it interferes with other classes that I need to take.

The instructor for the class is Doug Underwood, if that's any help.

Thanks in advance and good luck with finals!

Subject:where can i get. . .?
Posted by:sinises.
Time:11:58 am.
I've combed through the memories and oddly enough, no one seems to have posed this question:

Where can I get cardboard boxes? It's that time of the year to move out of the dorms, and I can't seem to find any cardboard boxes. Any stores around the Ave that sells 'em? Or is there any place I can go to nab me some large cardboard boxes?

Ok, so I realized, with the weather like it is right now, that I am in serious need of an electric fan. Where can I get one in or close to the u-district? I don't have a car nor very strong arms.

Just out of curiosity, has anyone heard back from the Financial Aid office about their 2009-10 award(s)? I'm still waiting. I thought they would've sent out awards by mid-May...

Just wondering how many times those in the psych program had to apply? I only have a 2.9 GPA for the three classes they look at (biopsych, psych 101 and psych 209) and I am worried I am going to have to apply many times to get in sense the major is getting more competitive. Thanks!

Subject:graduating...UW web-related stuff
Posted by:starclusterm45.
Time:12:52 am.
I'm graduating in June and I know that I can keep my e-mail address as long I have it all forwarded elsewhere. Does the same kind of thing apply to my web stuff on Dante if I follow the directions here?: http://www.washington.edu/computing/web/publishing/url-redirect.html

Also, is there a way to just buy/keep your domain on Dante (students.washington.edu..) after graduating? When does UW start to get rid of all your NetID-related stuff after you graduate?

hey has anyone successfully transferred their inbox emails from webpine to their outlook account?

description of how to transfer emails from inbox
http://www.washington.edu/computing/cloud/transferring.html

I completed all of the steps in the last link, but my emails have not been transferred yet. The status is: Your e-mail is being downloaded now. Please wait while it's retrieved. I want all of my OLD, ones that are stored in my inbox from 2006, emails, I don't care about what is being forwarded to me. This is possible, yeah?
