Mayor of Salt Lake City to Bush, Congress, and Media: "We Won't take it anymore!"
by deesings ([info]deesings)
at December 11th, 2007 (04:58 am)

Address by Mayor Ross C. "Rocky" Anderson, December 3, 2007

Today, as we come together once again in this great city, we raise our
voices in unison to say to President Bush, to Vice President Cheney,
to other members of the Bush Administration (past and present), to a
majority of Congress, including Utah's entire congressional
delegation, and to much of the mainstream media: "You have failed us
miserably and we won't take it anymore."

While we had every reason to expect far more of you, you have been
pompous, greedy, cruel, and incompetent as you have led this great
nation to a moral, military, and national security abyss." "You have
breached trust with the American people in the most egregious ways.
You have utterly failed in the performance of your jobs. You have
undermined our Constitution, permitted the violation of the most
fundamental treaty obligations, and betrayed the rule of law.

You have engaged in, or permitted, heinous human rights abuses of the
sort never before countenanced in our nation's history as a matter of
official policy. You have sent American men and women to kill and be
killed on the basis of lies, on the basis of shifting justifications,
without competent leadership, and without even a coherent plan for
this monumental blunder.
We are here to tell you: We won't take it anymore! You have acted in
direct contravention of values that we, as Americans who love our
country, hold dear. You have deceived us in the most cynical,
outrageous ways. You have undermined, or allowed the undermining of,
our constitutional system of checks and balances among the three
presumed co-equal branches of government. You have helped lead our
nation to the brink of fascism, of a dictatorship contemptuous of our
nation's treaty obligations, federal statutory law, our Constitution,
and the rule of law.

Seeking Redemption in The Eyes of The World
by deesings ([info]deesings)
at May 2nd, 2007 (05:13 am)

Here is the speech by Professor Ed Firmage who spoke at our April 28 IMPEACH Rally in Salt Lake (Thanks to One Utah for the post):

Seeking Redemption in The Eyes of The World

The impeachment clause of the American Constitution is fashioned upon the English experience with impeachment used frequently as a Rule of Law community emerged in Britain. There, the supremacy of Parliament, especially the House of Commons, was the result. As Parliament came to prevail over Tudor and Stuart monarchical power, Parliament used impeachment to lessen the power of the monarchy vis-à-vis Parliament. Since the King could do no wrong, Parliament picked off the Crown’s leading supporters in government, impeaching and punishing the offenders, thus over time, curtailing monarchical power. In England, the Bill of Impeachment, with its articles of impeachment, originated in Commons and, passing Commons, proceeded to trial before the House of Lords, the law lords playing a significant role.

People for Peace and Justice of Utah call for a protest of President Bush?s anticipated Veto of the Iraq Appropriations Bill.
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE:

Emergency Veto Rally

Salt Lake City Federal Building
100 S. State Street
Salt Lake City WHEN:
May 2, 5:00 PM WHO:
People for Peace and Justice of Utah (PPJ)
CONTACTS:
Eileen McCabe 801-201-0219 leenaree@communitymail.org
Deanna Taylor deesings@xmission.org President Bush has promised to veto the Global War on Terror Supplemental Appropriations bill, HR 1591. In addition to funding for continuing operations in Iraq and Afghanistan, it also provides for veteran?s care, Katrina Recovery, and accountability for funding in Iraq, such as prohibitions against funding torture or permanent military bases. This ABC News article has an excellent overview of the bill, as well as the details of the April 26 vote.
In support of the vote by the Senate, and in protest of President Bush?s veto, People for Peace and Justice, a program of Blue Sky Institute, calls for concerned citizens to join them at a rally on May 2, at 5:00 in front of the Salt Lake City Federal building.
"By vetoing this bill, President Bush has demonstrated his complete lack of respect for Congress. He is commander in chief, but he is also part of government built upon checks and balances. Rather than demand that Congress send him a bill he can sign, he could compromise, and accept oversight," stated Tom King, a co-founder of PPJ.
?This bill was a first attempt at fiscally constraining this war, which constitutional scholars have stated is a legitimate means for Congress to influence the scope and duration of a war,? said Chuck Tripp, political science professor at Westminster. "It represents compromise, in providing funding, but demanding oversight."
"The timelines of the Senate version (6 months from date of passage) are more stringent that those approved by the House (as late as August 2008). These dates and the oversight requirements that go with them are completely reasonable. We must continue to support members of the House and Senate in demanding the near-frame redeployment, and not caving to later dates, or elimination of timelines altogether," said Deanna Taylor, a co-founder of Blue Sky Institute.
"It is time to acknowledge that whatever the original motivations or rationale for this war, it is a dismal failure, and more lives are being lost every day. It is time to engage with the international community on a withdrawal plan like HR 1234, and to bring our troops home,?" said Eileen McCabe, national delegate for the Desert Greens, Green Party of Utah.

Our Accountability Moment

Our Accountability Moment

In September 1973, Linda Ensminger walked into my 8th grade English class.  She informed us that she was a member of SDS, had a file with the FBI, and was proud of it. She also said that her job was not to tell us what to think, but to teach us how to think.  We kept journals, to record our thoughts, and write poems and essays about the world around us.  There was a lot to write about in those turbulent times of Cold War theatrics, social upheaval, visible and vocal opposition to an increasingly unpopular war.  And then Watergate exploded on to the scene.
