If I Had Only Known

Hello all. LISSA is slowly but surly building its website. There is a section in the "for Students" tab called "If I had only known." This is a place for students(past and present) from all library schools (not just USM) to share with current and newbie SLISers what they have learned. We are in dire need of newer, more helpful comments. Please take a second to reflect on your days in library school and your life as a librarian and share one thought that might be helpful or insightful.

Here's the link to the page and the current input. You can see why we need your help. http://www.usm.edu/lissa/students.html

Thanks a million!

›Sushi Social ›

Come and enjoy some sushi with some of our local alumni (past and recent) as we get together to discuss the “real world” of librarianship.  We’ll be at Sakura’s across from USM on Friday, January 25th  at 6PM.

›Bowling Party›

Several LISSA members have expressed interest in participating in a bowling night; however, there has been a difference of opinion on the best night to meet. Starting February 2nd 2008, the bowling night will be moved from Saturday night to Friday night (still at 6PM) to accommodate these  requests. If you (and your friends and family) are free, please come join us that HUB Lane in Hattiesburg for some bowling and good times!

› Student-to-Staff š

LISSA is an official ALA Student Chapter and thus is eligible to designate one student to the roster of the ALA Student-to-Staff Program during the 2008 Annual Conference in Anaheim, CA.  To qualify, the student must be a personal member of ALA (http://www.ala.org/Template.cfm?Section=Membership&Template=/CustomSource/Membership/Index.cfm).
*Students who have already participated in the program are not eligible.

šOops!š

A recent printing error left LISSA with several misprinted raglans. By design the raglan was to have USM logo placed centered on the front (as shown); however, a mix-up at the printers resulted in two black(both XXL) and one burgundy (not red, XXL) raglan, all with the logo on the left chest. If you are interested in purchasing one of these shirts at a discounted price, please contact Dede by email at de88de@gmail.com.

š LISSA Book Driveš

LISSA is partnering up with Pi Sigma Alpha-the Political Science Honor Society, to conduct the book drive for the soldiers training at Camp Shelby. During the month of January, two drop off stations (one located in the Liberal Art Building, one in the SLIS foyer) will be set up where students and faculty can drop off their donations. With the help of Dr. Parker and the members of Pi Sigma Alpha, this book drive promises to be very successful and rewarding.

In the month of November, the Oak Grove Public library will be celebrating Children’s Book Week. On the 13th staff members will be dressing up as their favorites children’s book characters. On the 28th, the library has tentative plans for a “Story time with the Stars.” For more information, contact Ashley Powell at 601-296- 1620.

Since the days of World War I and World War II, librarians have been providing an invaluable service to the men and women of the armed forces. Help us keep this traditional alive with a book drive for the soldiers stationed at Camp Shelby. If you have any spare books you would like to donate to this cause, please drop them off in the LIS main office. A box will be located in the hallway leading up to the office. If you would like to help pack up and carry the books out to Camp Shelby, please email Dede at de88de@gmail.com. “Be All You Can Be”- Help the USMBC (University of Southern Miss-Book Corps)

ALA Grants are Available

This information was forward to me today by Dr. Welsh.
If you would like to attend ALA next year, but funding is limited,
check these out!

Travel grants for attending Annual Conference

It’s not too early to start thinking about next year’s Annual Conference–especially if you’re seeking some travel assistance

Thousands of dollars in travel awards are available to ALA members (and interested professionals) through the generosity of vendors and other benefactors. For the most part, the deadline for applying for these travel grants is December 1, 2007. While it seems early, acting now can mean a free ticket, registration and even a per-diem. Check out the requirements for these grants … and apply! Or, if you are a supervisor and you know your travel funds won’t go as far as you’d like, nominate someone! Shirt orders

Hello everyone. My apologies about the shirts. There was a conflict with the design and the new shirt design will need to be submitted to the University for approval. Hopefully this process should only take a few days. If you are still interested in getting a shirt, I will hold onto all the orders. If you want to cancel please leave a reply on the LISSA blog or send me an email at de88de@gmail.com with the subject line CANCEL SHIRT and your name. Also, any distance learner ordering a shirt should be prepared to pay a shipping fee. Again, super sorry about the delay. I am still really looking forward to getting my shirt. I hope you all are too. If you have any questions or comments, please feel free to write. Thanks.
