| x-posted - ladyfest toronto 2008 volunteering! |
[27 Feb 2008|10:36am] |
Ladyfest Toronto 2008 Call out for volunteers
Ladyfest Toronto is a four-day arts, culture and music festival. We are a non-profit, grassroots, do-it-yourself collective who seek to promote urban feminism. We work from a framework that is pro-feminist, trans-inclusive, pro-diversity and anti-oppressive. We seek to build community among Toronto's feminist businesses, artists, activists and academic community. We believe that art is a powerful form of resistance and hope to incite dialogue about contemporary feminist issues in our city. We will be providing a venue for women to express themselves and showcase their work free of sexism, classism, racism, and homophobia; as well as other forms of oppression.
We believe that politics can be fun and hope to facilitate political action and create tools for feminist networking at our annual event. We will proudly showcase the talent and actions of both local and international women. Ultimately, we hope Ladyfest Toronoto inspires women everywhere to organize themselves and create similar spaces that allow women's creative works to be seen and heard, as other Ladyfest's have for us.
Ladyfest Toronto offers something for everyone, whether you are identify as a feminist or are curious about the ideas of it.
This year’s festival will be taking place Thursday, September 18th to Sunday, September 21st 2008.

We are about to release a 7" on New Age Records, and some other big label news coming up (in about 3 days) as well. We have a three week east coast tour in March with Furious Styles/Die Young/Battle! is currently being booked, so we would need to start practicing together asap. Also, this summer we are doing a month tour in Mexico with Alguna Vez Fui Ciego.

[08 Jan 2008|01:34am] |
Hey everyone! I'm new here but I figure I'd introduce myself by promoting a record that my band just put out! It started out as a four-way split between women-fronted bands in the area (including Stand In Defense and Roadrage, but ended up just being my band Ripshit and our friends in Offsides. It was put out by our housemate and friend who does Spicy Soup Productions out of his bedroom in New Haven.
I am really siked about this! I'm very excited to see female fronted bands popping up in Connecticut, which has long been overrun by meathead bros. Please give the bands a listen if you get a chance and if you're into ordering the record just contact SSP or myself.
Thanks! - krystina

| YOUR BANDS |
[27 Dec 2007|04:29am] |
Are any of you in bands? Link em up! Before I started touring a lot I didn't think there were very many girls playing hardcore, but I've been amazed how at just about every 4th show there was a band with a female member.
AND IF YOU'RE IN A BAND, have things been smooth for you or has your gender been a "problem"? I'd like to hear experiences from different parts of the world of being a lady playing hardcore.
I know I've experienced some shit that's made me wonder it's 1907 or 2007. One time we played with a band that told the entire show that what I say doesn't matter "because you're a girl". I've been sent links to message board threads that talk, for endless pages, about my armpit hair (as a reason not to like my band....!!!) I've gotten phone calls that said, "Listen, here you might get hecklers. I don't want you to get all emotional and stop playing. And don't react... we have FIGHTS here!" as if I was a delicate flower or shy child who had never been to a hardcore show, and OBVIOUSLY, since I'm a girl, I'm TERRIFIED of violence and, this goes without saying, I've NEVER been in a fight. I've read a review praising my vocals, and when a commenter let the reviewer know I was a girl he said, "Oh wow. I had no idea. I still like it though." STILL? THOUGH?
I'm getting infuriated just thinking about it. Why are people so goddamn ignorant?!?
Anyway... let's hear it! Bands or gripes or both!

This is a huuuuuge show with a really diverse mix of bands AND it's our first show back since tour this past summer as well as our new bassist's first show with us AND we've never played that high up in Jersey so if any of you could make this show, that would be awesome.

i realise that this community is mainly to promote gigs, but i get the impression a couple of you are singing in bands and i'd really appreciate some advice. i've been messing around with my friend and recording a few tracks, and through practice my voice is getting stronger and my screaming better, but its still not as powerful as i'd like it to be. any tips? ive been recommended "the zen of screaming" dvd's, anyone think/know they're any good?

Not sure if anyone here cares, but i'm starting an experimental meetup community for edge people and would really like vegan/vegetarian edge people from girlsinhardcore to check it out. Maybe it'll work out, maybe not. Hopefully i'll be able to avoid trolls and non-edge people trying to fuck it up.

| A Decade of Straight Edge |
[01 Nov 2007|10:54pm] |
Today is my 10 year Straight Edge anniversary!
(November 1st 1997 was my first full day. Oct 31st the decision was made over a Ten Yard Fight record while still mildly hung over. Oct 30th I was drunk, high, and got jumped on my way to smoke crack.)
I feel really lucky to have been involved in hardcore back then and to know that there were other options for me. Without bands like Ten Yard Fight, Floorpunch (HOW AWESOME WERE THOSE REUNIONS BTW??!?!?!), and Trial, I'm positive that I would be dead by now.
How about you all? In what ways has hardcore saved YOUR life (literally or figuratively)??
It never ceases to amaze me the impact that a small scene like ours, music played by a bunch of dirty screaming kids, dusty old 7"s and burnt copies of GB cds, can effect/save/alter our lives and the lives of those around us.

| DRAMA new 7" out now! |
[25 Oct 2007|11:55pm] |
Hello everybody!
I just dropping a line to let you know about this new record. Drama is a hardcore with metal influences, from Barcelona - Spain. It's formed by 3 ladies and 1 guy and they've played over europe and share the stage with bands like NO TURNING BACK.
it sounds like: WALLS OF JERICHO(first records's sound) meets TRAGEDY.

I understand this is a long shot, but worth it nonetheless. Apparently there is a record store in Atlanta that sells a Black Flag shirt with the image of the girls on Nervous Breakdown, these:

The person who had it didn't mention the name of it but I was hoping one of you could help me out, if this rings a bell to any of you at all and you'd like to help me out, I'll send money for anyone who could pick it up and send it to me.
Thanks a lot.
