Good afternoon,
I'm Canadian and been admitted to a US university as a mature post-degree student for the summer semester. I've sold my home and am starting to prepare for the move.
How detailed must the household goods inventory lists be? I'm moving a lot of professional books (yes, they'll be useful in my area of study) and am wondering if a general description of box contents (15 software and computer training manuals, ext. replacement value $30 each) will do or if the contents need to be itemized by box? And, although I've downsized substantially, I'm still moving a lot of stuff. Cheaper to move than store under present circumstances* My father and I are packing and doing the inventory next week.
Any one have experience crossing the Canadian/US border from Canada into the US and care to share?
I've emailed the question to the US Customs and Border Patrol, but have not yet heard back.
*Parental units are preparing to downsize themselves and I'd have to pay for storage here in Toronto. |

How long should one live in a country before deciding to move there full-time? |

I'm a former expat, returning to Prague (and Berlin) on a trip this week to see some old friends and hear some amazing music.
My two favorite bands (okay, my one favorite band with two names)is/are playing in Prague on the 16th and 17th of May. Catch them both nights for two very different shows, both equally amazing.
I'm flying 15 hours to see it, so what excuse could those of yopu already living in Central Europe have for not attending...? |

Hi,
My husband's job is moving us to Switzerland for a year-long assignment starting this summer. We currently live in Texas. We're going to sell one of our vehicles, but the other one we need to put in storage. Of course, we know we can't leave it sitting untouched for an entire year. We're trying to figure out how and where to store our vehicle, and how to make arrangements for someone to get it out of storage and drive it once every other month or so and keep up with any maintenance (oil changes, inspections, etc).
Does anyone have any experience on temporarily storing their vehicle and how they managed it? We could really use any advice.

hi, 18, female, freshman in college. i do not have a major yet, but i am leaning towards communications...except that i am not sure what type of communications job that i can use abroad. i am also interested in sonography, but with my depressing math/science skills it will mostly be unlikely, though i would probably love it because it would be as close to being an obstetrician as i could get...
the more i read and hear the less i want to make America my home for the rest of my life. not to sound cliche, but america's going 1984, piece by piece. it freaks me out.
as i am merely a college freshman with basically no life experience, i understand that i am highly uninformed on what one must do to become an expatriate of most any country you want to live in other than your home country. you have to get a lot of stuff together. is it nearly impossible to become an expatriate nowadays? is there anything i can do now to prepare to live in another country someday? does anyone else feel the way i do, or has moved to another country and is happier than they were in this one?
should i try to get into a job that would advise going to graduate school?
i suppose i should mention that i consider myself 'religious' as i guess you might put it. and i was wondering if there are countries that are really anti-Christian.
it's a really overwhelming thing to even consider, but if i can somehow get my foot in the door now, then i know i will not regret it later.
will studying abroad help me?

hi everyone! I'm a 19 year old gay, pacifist, american who is curious about leaving...for good. I don't want to offend anyone but I'll be frank about my political views. I have refused to say the pledge of allegiance since I was 12. I despise nationalism. I am an absolute pacifist to the point I border on anarchism. when I identify myself it's by my ethical beliefs or as a Pennsylvanian (my family lived there since 1684, not counting the natives they married who had obviously lived there longer...) the US government has not been here as long as we have...but I still feel like I may want to leave. any suggestions on finding a graduate school (and paying for it) in europe, and then getting citizenship there, would be greatly appreciated.

Hello! I am a new member too. Actually I live in Canada (Québec) where I came from Russia two years ago. Now I would like to move to Europe.
I am 39, and by profession I am a translator. I work mainly with Swedish and Russian languages, and they are hardly useful in Canada...
I would like to settle down in Sweden (I lived there in the past), Finland (visited it this summer) or some other European country. I know it's not easy. Europe is a fortress... But it's the only place where I feel at home.

I just joined this community, so hello everyone!
I'm 22, and just moved out of the USA to Thailand after being offered a teaching job. I grew up in Canada, but was moved back to the US after my Dads job transfer. After 10 years of American life I finally escaped. I do miss my family, but they plan on visiting me in a couple monthes. We also talk several times a week, so it's not a big deal. Now that I'm here, my plans are to either finish my degree at a university in Bangkok, or find a teaching job in another country. I really like it here so far, so I definately see myself settling down here for a while. So my advice to anyone who is unhappy in America, get out!! There is a whole world of amazing things to do and see, people to meet. My only regret is that I didn't leave sooner. Ok, well nice to meet everyone! =]

I'm doing a project on Iraqi-Americans that's due in a couple of weeks. As you can probably imagine, it's insanely hard to locate people who I can talk to or survey or interview. If you're from Iraq (or your parents are) and you're willing to take a survey (it's only ten questions which you rate from strongly agree to strongly disagree,) respond to this with your email and I'll send the survey to you. I'm looking for a dirt-cheap flight across the atlantic (USA to Europe) and any takeoff/landing spot is alright. Where can I find such a thing? Doesn't matter if it's direct, doesn't matter where. Land travel is cheaper than air, so I'll get to the airport my own way. Once landed, I'm heading to Copenhagen but where I land doesn't matter either.
