Most landline phones (not cordless ones) still support pulse dialling, which means that you can dial any number just by using the receiver hook (you know, the button that gets pushed down when you hang up the phone). Because of the fact that phones used to measure the amount of pulses in order to dial a number, all you have to do is to use the receiver hook to create these "pulses". For example of you wanted to dial the number 615, you would press the receiver hook 6 times in rapid succession, then wait and push it once, then wait again and press it 5 times in rapid succession, and so on until you have dialled the number you desire.

This is because the old systems were electromechanical. At the telephone exchange they had physical dials that rotated once with each pulse in order to properly route the connection. CLICK CLICK CLICK CLICK CLICK

It's probably in here somewhere and you can probably find a much better non-Wikipedia page. I remember seeing some olde thyme diagrams of the equipment, but am too lazy to find them. Perhaps search patents?

we've got one too. its main purpose is to sit beside the base station for the cordless phone so we can still answer calls when someone's left the handset elsewhere.

Wouldn't that take forever? Especially if your numbers, like mine, are all above the number 6?

It took me quite some time to dial it all out. My cell number has two 8s, two 9s, a 0, two 5s... and some 2s and 1s. But the 8s, 9s, and 0s are killer.

haha my apologies. Although its usefulness is somewhat debatable seeing as many phones now are not capable of pulse dialling, such as mobile phones or chordless phones. That said, apparently you used to be able to use pulse dialling to get free calls out of public phones!!! Not too sure if it still works though....

I've accidentally proved this before.

Because I mainly use my cell phone, I'm used to not dialing "1" before the area code. This has also gotten me into the habit of dialing the whole number, including the area code even for local calls.

At one point, I went to dial a number, entered the first two digits of the area code, then quickly tapped the receiver hook so that I could dial again. I didn't hold it down long enough, so it treated it as if I had dialed "1" instead. Unfortunately, I was calling someone in my area code "914." In other words, I dialed 91-1. It was fun having to explain to the operator what happened.
