Apartment for Sublet [May. 26th, 2009|11:39 am]

snoglobel
Hi,

We just bought a house and need to sublet our apartment for July or August until November.

We live in a 900 sq. foot 1 bedroom apartment.  It has it's own washer and dryer in the unit.  It also has a balcony AND a gas fireplace.  We are on the second floor so very private.  Corner unit so LOTS of windows and natural light.  It's only about 15 minutes by car to U of R and great for a grad student living off campus.  I went to U of R (and now work there) and commute without a problem.

We are also really close to Black Creek Park, and the Genesee River if you like our door stuff.  And are walking distance to many amenities on Chili Ave including Wegmans, KMART, Target, Blockbuster, a bar, several pizza places, a gym, and many more.

Rent is $790/mo and includes hot water, basic cable, and high speed internet.

Email me at lrichar3@gmail.com if you are interested in finding out more.  I have photos I can sent and am willing to show interested parties a tour.

Local indie/punk band with piano-laden songs about everything from particle physics to drunken phone calls to your ex. We released our first self-titled EP last year and on July 2nd, we'll have a batch of new songs, entitled "Celebrity Crush." This fall, we're releasing our first full-length, "Signals." We have a bunch of local summer shows coming up, so check out our stuff and maybe we'll see you at one.

Thanks!

Graduate housing [Feb. 24th, 2009|09:11 am]

luzclarita
My husband was accepted into UR's graduate program and we are planning our visit for the orientation this upcoming weekend. I am especially interested in gaining information about housing. We currently live in Portland, Oregon, so it will be a big geographical move for us this summer.

My husband's goal is to find somewhere within walking distance for 4-6 months while we search for a house to purchase in the area.

I've been looking at the university website about graduate housing, but for all the words, it seems to not give very much information. I see lots of roomate ads in their off campus housing database, but we are a married couple and are not interested in living with roomates. Does anyone here know how much does university graduate housing cost? Their literature doesn't say at all. Is it a better deal than finding an apartment one's self?

I also perused the D & C apartment ads online, but it just links to apartments.com, which doesn't have very good searchability. Looking at Rentrochester.com and restricting by the Strong neighborhood (which is within walking distance) I see that a 1 bedroom is $720. Is that right? That's almost as much as we pay in Portland and our houses are far more expensive, so I'm not sure I understand this phenomenon. If that's really true, then perhaps we need to consider buying a house before moving out?

International Prospective Student [Oct. 22nd, 2008|04:02 pm]

Hi,

I’m a prospective student from South Africa. I graduated from high school last year and then took a gap year. My family is planning to move to America and we’re considering Rochester.

I’ve been researching Universities in Northern America and my favorite so far is the University of Toronto, Canada. I want to study Anthropology and I really like what I’ve heard so far about the cultural diversity at Toronto, but I’m taking Rochester into consideration as well.

I have a few questions and would greatly appreciate it if someone could take the time to answer them.

1.)    A few people have posted comments that give me the idea that Rochester is rather conservative, is this true?

2.)    How is Rochester towards international students? And gay students?

3.)    Are there any South African students at Rochester?

4.)    What’s the Anthropology program like?

5.)    What’s the deal with the no cars rule for 1st years? Are they actually allowed to do that?

6.)    What’s the crime rate like?

7.)    Are the libraries any good? Are there at least a few great bookstores?

Thanks in advance.

It's a last-second request... and it's on the off-chance... but did anybody out there buy tickets to see Stephen Colbert and then somehow become unable to use them? Because I'll buy a few.

Just asking.

Just in case.

Bus to Strong Memorial Hospital [Aug. 23rd, 2008|12:07 am]

mamba_barnacle
Hi,

I'm a junior-to-be who will be taking microbiology courses in the medical center this fall. Unfortunately, that means leaving River Campus almost everyday to go to Strong Memorial Hospital. I know my microbiology class is in room 2-6500ish, which is most accessible by the entrance that reads "School of Medicine and Dentistry" (the one near the Arthur Kornberg research center). Anyone know a bus that'll take me there?

Thanks in advance.

Please take my survey "Attitudes towards nonsexist language in the U.S.".

It'll take you 5 -10 minutes and you'd really be helping me out with my research.

Feel free to spread the link. Thank you!

Hi everyone!

I'm a transfer student entering as a Junior.  I'll probably be housed in either Southside or Riverview.

Are there any specific things that I need to bring in order to live comfortably?  Aside from the basics, of course.

I should add that this is my first time living in a residence hall so any help is appreciated.

Thanks!

Summer Course: PHY 100 [Feb. 24th, 2008|05:39 pm]

[Current Music |"The Way We Get By" - Spoon]

Hey, guys, if you're going to be (or looking for a reason to be) in Rochester this summer, you should consider taking Physics 100! I know the professor and he's really great, so I'd highly recommend a class with him. It's not overly technical or mathematical, and you can use it for a bunch of natural sciences clusters!

This Summer 2008, the Physics Department has added Physics 100: Nature of the Physical World to their Session A (May 19 - June 27) offerings.

Nature of the Physical World (CRN: 19393) is an intro-level course for students without experience/expertise in the physical sciences. The purpose of the course is to advise non-science majors on how to think critically and sequentially about current science-related debates and controversies while learning general physical principles in the process. The course's focus will be on using examples from recent events and topics of interest to learn about how techniques from physics can be applied to problems of everyday interest.

Topics may include: Efficiency of biofuels with respect to traditional fuels, energy and environmental impacts of recycling, and efficiency of food production.

I've applied to the University of Rochester, and I just have a few questions. Some of them have already been asked/answered in previous posts, but I'm going to ask them anyway in case there are new opinions. Thanks for any help.

1) I'm leaning toward majoring in environmental science/conservation biology. What are the science programs like?

2) I'm your average hippie liberal (minus some stereotypes), will I find like-minded people?

3) What are the chances of me finding fun things to do without getting drunk/high?

4) What is the area outside of the college like? Any fun things to do?

5) Are the people generally nice and welcoming?

6) If, in the future, I was to try and find an apartment in the surrounding area, how expensive are they / how hard is it to get one?

7) Are you allowed cars your first year? (I'd like to have the chance to travel home.)

8) Has your personal experience been mostly positive or negative?

9) Lastly, any major positive/negative things about the school, or any other random things care to share?

Hi...

Anyone need tickets to the comedy show for Meliora Weekend? (Curb Your Enthusiasm) I thought I would be able to go and now can't make it.

I tried to get a refund from the registration people, but I missed the deadline by a day. I have 2 tickets available. Cost was $30 each, but I am willing to discount to $25.

Email me at lrichardson@cvs.rochester.edu or reply to this post.

MALE ROOMMATE NEEDED OFF CAMPUS! [Jul. 26th, 2007|01:19 pm]
jcb7330
I neeeeeed to rent my boyfriend's room at his house by the fall because he wants to move in with me. It's $360 total with everything included. This is a great neighborhood with lots of college kids! 10 minutes to RIT/MCC, 10 minute WALK to U of R! This would be Paige Street, intersecting with Barton/Brooks Ave. The three guys living there will be juniors at RIT.

Contact me at jcb7330@rit.edu if you want to come check the place out! You can move in as soon as you want! (We're looking for someone to stay for at least the school year, until May).

Thanks!

Joanna
