AboutWelcome to Unusual Liasons
This community was made specifically to gather, house and encourage those rare pairings and to promote fanworks from rare anime, movies, comics, manga and books. It is gen, het, yaoi/slash and yuri friendly, and any talk to the contrary of ANY of those will absolutely, positively not be tolerated.
Fanfiction and fanart! Both are welcome! We also encourage rare fandom/pairing recommendations in fanfiction and fanart and if you'd like to promote a rare fandom/pairing mailing list, community or other information, please feel free.
Remember, however, that 'rare' is in the eyes of the moderators. Yes, there are some things in the tags and the memories that are no longer rare, but they may have been at the time. These things are subject to change.
Rules:
I know. Rules. None of us particularly like them but they are necessary. I’ll try to keep it to as few as possible. However, for this to be fun for everyone, I need each community member to help out. Use common sense, act like an adult, and things should go smoothly.
1. Rare is the name of the game. If you're not certain if a fandom is rare, please ask a moderator. There is a list below of the fandoms which have been declared not rare. It is not a complete list by any means and, if you are uncertain, please, please ask.
2. No character, author, series, genre, fic bashing. Period.
3. No inflammatory remarks. I have a can of Troll-Be-Gone, I’m not afraid to use it.
4. Bear in mind criticism is not necessarily a flame. If you ask for it, be prepared to receive it.
5. We ask that you do post some warnings on any fanfiction you post if it contains anything that would possibly offend or insult John and Jane Q. Public. Some examples…
6. lj cut may not be your friend, but it is for the rest of us. When posting a fic or any long rant/diatribe/musing/explanation/recommendation that is over 6 paragraphs long, spare us and use the cut feature.
7. No Real Person Slash. Sorry. There are plenty of communities out there for RPS. This is for movies, television series, books, games, graphic novels, manga etc. Characters only.
8. No original characters. There are any number of places out there for original stuff.
9. No book fanfiction where the author has EXPLICITY forbidden it be done. No trying to slide Anne Rice in here.
10. Adults. Act like one. Discuss things, agree to disagree, but do not resort to flaming or name calling.
11. And most important...The decisions of the moderators are final.
Two very big THOU SHALT.
On the subject line, identify your fandom to make it easy for us to archive your fic/pic/rec:
[fic] name of fandom -- title of fic
If it's fan art, substitute [pic] for fic, if it's a promotional post, [promo], if it's a recommendation [rec]. Always follow the word in brackets with the name of the fandom. Always.
Thou shalt ALWAYS fill in the subject line.
It’s also called Headers and they shall be on the outside of the lj-cut.

Doing this will help in ease of archiving in memories.
Please note:
Rare fandoms tend to be rare because of lack of participation/interest. When you see a fandom or a story that interests you, comment. Encourage the writer, ask about the fandom, ask if there are other stories out there, start looking around. The best way to build enthusiasm and gather a group of writers/artists so there'll be more of the things you like is to let them know that someone out there is interested. Most of us are willing to write for the crickets, but it's more fun when you know there's someone out in the audience, even if they initially just came for the free popcorn.
Don't worry about commenting on something posted ages ago... someone will eventually find it and nothing fuels inspiration like discovering that there is someone out there who knows what you're talking about.
What is allowed and not allowed. -- please refer to the fandom list page for an expanding list of non-rare fandoms.
A couple of good rules of thumb are:
* If there is an lj group with more than twenty members or more than one lj group listed.
* If there is a list on yahoogroups that has more than 100 members, chances are, it isn't a rare series.
* If there is a yahoogroup dedicated to the pairing and has more than 100 members, chances are, it isn't a rare couple.
* If you can do a google search and find archives that have more than a dozen fanfics for a series, it isn't a rare series.
* If ff.net or any other large archive has a section with more than 40-50 stories, it isn't a rare fandom.
As always, there can be exceptions. Please remember that this is a rare pairing community as well.
Examples:
Otto and Noin from Gundam Wing. Big fandom already exists for Gundam Wing, but I can't say I've ever seen Otto/Noin, so it counts as a rare pair and can be posted.
Crawford and Manx from Weiss Kreuz. Another huge fandom, hardly any out for this pairing. Acceptable.
When in doubt, run it by a moderator.
Caveat! This is important, so listen up. I and the other moderators will be keeping an eye on fandoms. If we see a series/movie/book becoming popular it will be removed from the acceptable list. We want Unusual Liasons to stay a community to showcase those rare and beautiful gems that are overlooked for whatever reason by fandom at large.

Other Communities of Interest
yuletide is a community that is dedicated to a secret santa project limited exclusively to rare fandoms. While their main activity is mid-October through early January, they keep a running total of unfilled requests open from January through October of every year and a gigantic archive of rare fandoms. They are well worth exploring and we encourage you to find an unfilled wish request and fill it for some lucky person as well as contribute to the yearly fun.
