Evercrack : Reality Check update Mar. 28th, 2006 @ 04:21 pm
[info]sam_lamander
I had far less time those last days than I thought I would have, so my project didn't advance much. And the more I'm working on it, the more I'm thinking I bit more than I could chew. But I won't give up, not until I have achieved the creation the main city (for which I could'nt find any better name than ... Main City) and a few basic quests : rat hunting in the basement of some inn, random errands and probably an outdated version of what will become the "Rescue my daughters in Phandriel" quest Jeyanne went through in Mr Scougall's Evercrack.

Limited time, limitless possibilities... That's exactly my problem. I hope you people are patient, because I'm not quite finished on this one...

Evercrack : Reality Check (working title) Mar. 14th, 2006 @ 10:57 am
[info]sam_lamander
Thanks to [info]luinthoron, who pointed me to [info]sscougall's Evercrack, I finally came up with a title for my project. At least a working one.

__
Evercrack : Reality Check

Holidays ! Whatever job is yours, you decided to take break from it, and it allows you to afford a long stay in one of the most trendy leisure realities : Evercrack.

To hell, nosey bosses and lazy co-workers, clients, suppliers, appointements, schedules and al. You're officially on vactions and your intent is to enjoy it to the very last bit.

No sooner had you docked that you rushed to the character creation counter. And now, let the adventure begin !

__

Settings:
The module will take place on EVERQUESTING ADVENTURING INVOLVING THE DUNGEONS AND DRAGONS OF THE AMAZING WORLD OF NORRATHORILEYHAWK D20 VERSION 3.5.1.66, which is a far older version of the reality Jean Grosvenor reviewed. Thus, only the "classical" races and classes from D&D will be available. Admittedly, the version the director is referring to in the original Evercrack text  (the one with "only" 30 base classes and a mere 205 prestige classes) was already a version 4.something.

I'm still unsure of what the main plotline will be, having some troubles in knowing what is actually fesible with the Aurora Toolset. This, and I don't know if I will manage to prevent myself from putting a Normalizers vs. Reality Adepts fight.

What the module will certainly  contain :
- a "comic" adventure
- a "kill everything that moves" adventure
- possibly a former review of the reality (does anybody know actually how old is Twoday's Guidebook to Realities ?)
- some l33tsp34k
- a Blue Sky of Death scene

Feel free to give me your opinion about what you think should be in a such a thing.

Hi there. I'm new and I have this funny idea... Mar. 12th, 2006 @ 06:26 pm
[info]sam_lamander
Hello !

I read the whole Unreal Estate original stuff some time around Christmas and found it quite outstanding. Since then, I've been running some ideas of possible themes for fanfics in my head... And while reading some webcomics here and there, it suddenly went "pop" in my head. I was very focused on Tribal Alpha, all the time, and here is what bursted in my sick, sick head : what if I tried and created a Neverwinter Nights module that would take place in the Unreal Estate multiverse ?

I already know one thing for sure: this won't be easy. But I'm quite willing to give it a try... Though, since I'm brand new to all of this, I'm still fuzzy with some details of the UE:OH restrictions system. I guess it will sink in with some time and use. Please don't kick me too hard if I happen to trespass.

About the project itself now...

Well, what I thought of was kind of a plagiat of Tribal Alpha. Where there is a need, there is a reality where it will fit. Where there is a will, there is a reality where it can be fulfilled. Some profit-driven bastard began to run another leisure reality, where not only can you kill and die without suffering any real consequences other than a variation of your score in a ladder chart, but where you can, thanks to brand new reality devices (a courtesy of Real Ware, Inc.), be somebody totally different and spin earth-shaking "magic".

I guess I'll be working on writing down the global scenario before getting on to create the actual mod, if I actually manage to make it there.

But I'd like some advice so that I can stay true to the original UE story and compliant with the Open House project.

Many thanks in advance.

Requiem For Akemi Pt 2 - Rainy Day Woman Feb. 2nd, 2006 @ 03:03 pm
[info]selphie_trabia
A sunny day in Urbana. A little girl smiles as she climbs a slide in a childrens' playground. She slides down and lands at the bottom of the slide. She smiles.

A shadow falls across the little girl's field of vision. Two feet in white shoes step into her view. She looks up to see a woman with olive skin and smoky black hair. She smiles at the woman.

The woman is holding a purple umbrella. She does not smile back. She looks sad. She pats the little girl on the head.

It begins to rain.

The woman gives the little girl a blue teardrop made of glass.

A moment later, the woman drops a piece of paper on top of the little girl's prone form. She pulls out a bottle of ink from her purse and upends it on the child's body.

"Poor child. If only your father had never sinned."

The woman steps over the little girl's body. As she walks away, the ink travels up the little girl's body to form words on the paper.

*****

I kept my promise. This is the second letter.

You must be wondering how this child has died. Since I'm such a cooperative killer, I'll tell you. I drowned her in the rain.

Adrian was the one who discovered what had happened to us. You see, when someone survives a reality engine accident... sometimes, but very rarely, it changes them. It's got something to do with engine harmonics. I never understood it myself, but Adrian was excited about it.

Whatever the cause, we soon discovered that things began to happen. Weird things. I never got wet in the rain even when I didn't carry an umbrella. Adrian could sometimes, but very rarely, close doors with an unconcious thought.

You see, the reality engine accident had granted us powers. Adrian with some form of telekenesis, me with the power to control water and Akemi... well...

Akemi was young and as a child, the accident granted her the most powers. Akemi could tell the future. She could see what was happening before it ever happened.

I remember the first time she used this power. I was going to go out grocery shopping. Akemi was with me. We were at the junction between the grocery store and our block.

Akemi was... maybe around eight then... She looked at me and said, "Don't cross the street, Mama."

I put my foot down, I thought she was being silly. I pulled her arm, but she refused to budge. I fought with her and as I did so, a car careened around the corner out of control. It smashed into the car just in front of us. I could have been killed, but Akemi knew that it was coming.

We were so proud of Akemi and her power. We were so foolish. We thought her gifted with some form of ESP. We didn't think much about our powers then, it wasn't a big deal to us. We should have paid more attention. We should have been more careful to conceal ourselves from outsiders.

Instead, we showed her off to everyone we knew... We should have known better.

Perhaps I'll continue the story in the next letter. For now, goodbye. The rain is stopping.

*****

The woman walks the streets of Urbana and disappears into the night.

Requiem for Akemi - Part 1 - Restless Night Jun. 18th, 2005 @ 12:57 pm
[info]selphie_trabia
It always rains in Restless, but I like it that way. Rain cleanses. It washes the crap on the road down the drain. It makes the air refreshingly cool. I like the rain. Rain is pretty. I could waste my time writing about the rain all day, but I probably shouldn’t because the reason that I’m writing this is because somebody has to know my story. Someone has to know why I’m doing what I’m doing. With any luck, they’ll understand why.

It was a woman this time. I left my signature next to the body, as usual, one teardrop shaped piece of blue glass. The Restless Homicide Division shouldn’t have any trouble finding her given that whatever’s left of her is currently hanging from a lamppost at the moment. What they WILL have trouble finding, however, are fingerprints and DNA evidence. It’ll be raining pretty heavily in that corner of town for a while. They won’t be finding any murder weapons either. I’m thorough like that.

Even if they DID find fingerprints and DNA, they won’t find any matching records. I don’t exist.

I’m supposed to be dead too.

I’ve been checking up the guro nodes set up by the Crime Scene Fan Circle lately. It seems that they’ve got a name for me.

Mizu.

Water.

I like the sound of that.

I’d better get back to the point.

Nobody starts life as a killer. I certainly didn’t. Needless to say, I wasn’t always like this, but people change.

*****

I used to be happily married. My husband, Adrian, was a REC certified engineer, so we were never in need of much. We lived in a mobile home, not because we needed to, but because it was more convenient that way. Both of us liked to travel, so the transient lifestyle suited us.

Three years after our marriage, Akemi joined us. She was the world’s most beautiful baby and I adored her. There isn’t a mother in the world who doesn’t love their own baby and there won’t be a mother in the world who loved their daughter as much as I loved Akemi.

Akemi was four when the accident happened. We were sitting in the living room, Akemi in my lap. Adrian was tinkering with the reality engine. We had been doing a lot of traveling around that time and he was afraid that the engine might crash.

It did.

You don’t forget reality engine accidents. I remember every detail of what happened as if it had only happened yesterday. Adrian yelled as he was pelted with bits of burning metal. I jumped for cover, holding Akemi in my arms to protect her from the blast. All of us were screaming and then…

And then…

And then we were fine. The home had managed to land us somewhere in Nippon and for some strange reason, nobody was hurt at all. The only difference was that Akemi was still bawling, I was still on the floor, Adrian had fainted and the engine had melted.

The incident had left us scarred in a different way.

*****

The clock just buzzed 3 AM. My ride's due soon. I’ll leave this note here.

I don’t know who is reading this at the moment, but whoever you are, you’ll find the next installment of my story with the next body.

And don’t try to find any fingerprints, because you won’t.

Uhm. New. And Stuff. Jun. 16th, 2005 @ 10:49 pm
[info]selphie_trabia
Uhm. I'm new and uh... Well, not technically new. I've been lurking here for a year trying to get the courage up to post my first contribution to UE: OH. Uhm.

Yes.

Er...

I had an idea, but before I want to write anything, I want to know if starting in Restless is too cliche for a depressing story.

Uhm.

It's about a housewife.

And it's angsty.

And stuff.

Something. Anything! Feb. 3rd, 2005 @ 10:24 pm
[info]noip
The rain falls on Restless.
This is nothing surprising or new. The rain always falls on Restless, always has, always will.
That suits me fine. I like the rain.

A man stands in front of the Docks to Restless. He is just another particle in the shifting tide of those coming and going, but a disruptive one as, he is neither coming nor going.

There is nothing remarkable about him. He does not have the hunted look that so many bring to Restless, nor the look of relief as they leave, or of defeat as they are escorted away. He does not have wildly styled or colored hair or eyes. His clothes are not extravagant or in poor condition. Most importantly, he most certainly does not have a strange and troubled past.

All in all, he is a content looking man with warm brown eyes and wet brown hair, old enough to drink (but not so old as to have made a life out of it). He is dressed for the weather in a heavy jacket, though he seems to have forgotten his hat.

He suddenly starts to smile as he watches a Taxi stop being a part of this particular Reality. His grin ever widening, he picks up his single piece of luggage (a large rolling suitcase), checks a Twoday's map, and starts walking.

The rain feels good, you know? Refreshing. Cleansing. Pure.
But it never seems to last long enough. Always, eventually, it would end... a dozen excuses across a dozen Realities.
"That's enough to water the crops for now."
"We only need it to refresh the reservoirs."
"We're under water! It's not supposed to rain here!"
"We finally found the line of code that was the problem."
But then I found out Restless was real. Not just a place made up in Drome.

The man walked into the hotel. It wasn't actually far from the Docks, but walking to places in Restless seems much farther than in other Realities. By the time the man had passed through the doors, his head was completely soaked, and he was grinning like a madman.

He glanced around the lobby, noting the cheap and tacky art on the walls, the cheap and tacky furniture, and the cheap and tacky stains on the furniture, and finally the cheap and tacky manager working the desk. Taking a moment to think thoughts known only to him, the man nodded, strode up to the front desk, and explained that he would like to stay there.

Rain washes it all away.
In a soft rain, it washes the air clean.
In a heavier rain, it washes the streets clean, sweeping everything into the gutter and on into the sewers.
In a heavy enough rain, if you're willing, you can strip down and act like it's a shower. Lather up and scrub away.
Rain takes away all the filth.

"I like this place. It's good enough for what I want, at any rate. How much is it?"

The manager pulled up a form on the screen in the desk. "Just fill out this form, sir, and we can get you set up with a room right away. How much depends on what sort of service you expect, of course."

The man kept looking at the manager. "You don't understand. I don't just want a room-"

The manager let his excitement get the better of him, and cut the man off. "Ah, so sir is interested in a suite of rooms then?"

"No, that isn't it either. I-"

"Surely sir doesn't mean he wants to rent an entire floor, do you?"

"No! Stop, and listen to me. I do not want to rent anything." The manager started to speak again, making some sad and questioning sound, but the man silenced him. "I do not want to rent. I want this hotel. I want to buy it. You will name a price, and then give me ownership of this place. Then, you will stay just long enough to get your things and arrange somewhere else to go. Now... how much is it?"

The manager gaped at the young man for few moments after that.

So. Weird fic idea. Jan. 12th, 2005 @ 08:58 am
[info]sscougall
Wow, this place is QUIET. Possibly because 2F has all his time taken up by SP these days?

I have an odd idea for a new UE fic: There is this guy who has an obsession with his own death. He goes from reality to reality, searching for ways to 'die', apart from the obvious ones which will leave him too dead to go on. He goes from Tribal Alpha, to Evercrack, to a weird Tribal Alpha mod that's like 2F's original idea (people actually *die* and the Reality Engine brings you back) - only it doesn't work, and possibly others. Searching for the ultimate in death, he starts seeking out Nullspace accidents.

And obviously finds one.

I don't have much more than that for now.

What think you? Too weird, and/or too macabre? Any other reality ideas for what he could bounce between?

[info]transnomad
So I was writing this a few months ago, and then I stopped because I wasn't liking it. Now it and I are back. Yeah. For those who saw it last time around, I've changed the detective's name and personality, but that's about it. The first two sections may be seen here, but not the others because I can't be bothered to work out the HTML. So the second two parts are below.

Section 3 - there is no justice, and Jan sees a cat. )

Section 4 - serendipity in the Blue Sky of Death )

After many, many missteps (mostly because this is my first non-acting radio play experience ever), the first scene of the first episode of Unreal Estate: The Radio Play is up! This torrent'll be up for the next couple of weeks; I do intend to post a direct link to the file, eventually.

Those members of the community who've already downloaded the scene when I posted it, pretty please in a bunny suit, help seed? Right now, my cable upload is a measly 6k/sec and I don't think I'll be able to handle the downloads by myself...

Ok, since things have been quite for the last bit, I figured some of you might be interested in seeing this. It's the first scene from the second Mistaken Identities story (I'm not bothering with the l33t in the post because I'm too lazy ^_^;;), titled "Anything But Ordinary."

As always, comments/corrections/etc are welcome and encouraged. No ETA on more, but I should have some free time in coming weeks, so hopefully I'll be able to sit down and hammer it out (the basic ideas are already set in my head; just gotta transform them into bits).

State of UE:OH Jul. 26th, 2004 @ 03:46 pm
[info]twoflower
I'll be frank: UE:OH is kinda quiet lately.

Part of that is because I haven't gotten my proposed M/Beta story done; it's still being planned, so I can decide where I want to take it, plus I have Sekret Project to concern myself with. But when I started this project, it was with the idea that I wouldn't be the only one contributing content and therefore it wouldn't rely on me. It could carry on even if I wasn't writing.

I'm not chastizing the authors involved, mind you, since that'd be like kicking a gift horse in the mouth; if the concept is that we're counting on the community to keep the community going, smacking the community around is not wise. I'd simply like to diagnose community health.

So, what're you guys up to? How are your projects going? DO you have a project going? If not, why? Is there anything I can do, we can do to spur some UE:OH development? Or is everything generally hunky dory and we're just in a quiet spell?

Let's get discussing.

Just a thought but this can't play out even close to the original UE in terms of its ending. Even if the Motley Rag Tag Band of Heroes(TM) gets Mortimer, there's still going to be a highly trained, passionate, well-organised and supported group of Normalizers out there, who believe Adepts are evil. Some may come to believe Mortimer was an Adept, and so stop, but some would take that as further evidence of Adepts' evilness, that one could build such an organisation. And some would just refuse to believe the truth.

The OH Multiverse will never be safe for Adepts.

Which could make Post-Mortimer UE:OH fiction an interesting possibility, whenever the inevitable wrapping-up happens.

Well, my "big destiny" story which sucked just found the angle it needed to proceed forward.

I don't wanna spoil it but I'll say I was inspired by this comic from Bob the Angry Flower. I get to do wild surrealism and metaphor and stuff! Woohoo!

The story will unlock Beta and M and possibly Gillian for public use, and should add new spin on Mellow Fellow, Satsui, Duke. It starts up the endgame that'll lead to Mortimer's downfall by illustrating who the players will be -- but puts the confrontation into the indeterminate future, it'll be an event I'll write only when UE:OH is waning or needs a boost. It'll also lead into the story that adds Meiko and Eiko back into continuity. (Lorelei's gonna have to wait; I'm still seeking the right plot for her.)

No ETA. I can't predict my own writing lately. ^^;

This sat on my hard-drive far too long, I've been tinkering a bit and have managed to add a little more to it. At the moment it's just talking heads, but that'll expand further soon enough. At least that's the plan. Still I'd like a little input on how it's starting out, anything at all (even IT SUCKS) gratefully taken on board.

Reposted now with grammar fixes I'd forgotten to add.

Original outline here from all that time ago...

And now the update (minimal as it is)... )

It's still a little odd. I was going to do it all from one POV but I think a switching main character might help tell bits of the story that my protagonist can't see.
