    Possible Info About HHN18 Theme
As I am sure some of you may have received today, in an official email from Universal Backstage titled "I'm Gonna Call for an Appointment Myself" there was a snapshot of a handwritten notepad with the following message:

"So it turns out the appointment book I borrowed ain't helping me crab this any more than the pages the Doc rips out of her journal and tosses. The only ID for each patient is their initials. Once I put monikers to the mongrams I can check em out and get noodling the connection.

I been stakin' out her place and near as I can tell, two more plugs have gone missing -- some pimple face kid and a canary with great gams.

And I gotta get a closer up-and-down of this wacky dame herself -- which I don't mind cause she ain't lookin so bad lately. I noticed that she's wearin her hair different. Looks younger. Skinny but strong. Amd now she's never without that fountain pen and that silver jewelery box. I gotta see what she's keeping in there.

So I'm gonna call for an appointment myself -- tell her that I suffer from iatrophobia (ought to get her attention)."

    Signed "B.S."

The complete name of the detective is obscured, but he's from a New York office with the name Boris S. The image also contains a matchbook labelled partially Kitty K Clues.

I guess this means the overall theme this year has something to do with 30s/40s dectective mystery/film noir type deal?

Thought I would share for those who didn't get the email.~

I'm glad I became a Power Pass holder this year, because I got 15 bucks off per pass. So, anyway, does anybody know for certain that this year will be called, Halloween Horror Nights 18: Reflections Of Fear? Let's get this community popping! It's approaching mid-July...We should be seeing some advertisements soon!

    My review of HHN 2007!
So I went to HHN two weekends in a row this year - first on Saturday, Sept. 29 with my boyfriend, and then again on Friday, Oct. 5 with a group of friends. I have a year pass, so I was able to get two tickets for the price of one, basically.

The first weekend was rather disappointing compared to previous years. Based on my second visit, I think it was mostly because it was opening weekend and they just weren't prepared like they should have been. We were able to do five houses - we walked right into Jason's house when it was still daylight, then waited 45 minutes for Jack's Funhouse. We saw the Freak Show, which I wasn't a fan of at all. Bring back better scarezones and ditch the extra shows. After that, we waited 60 minutes for Freddy's and after a rain shower cleared out some of the lines, waited 30 minutes for PsychoScarpepy and 5 minutes for the Thing. The "scarezone" outside the Mummy was practically empty on opening weekend, the chainsaw guys were restricted solely to Earthquake (which I understand is a continuation of the Texas Chainsaw House, but still... roaming chainsaw guys make for great paranoia and add that "I'm never safe" feeling), and the area by Shrek was empty. There were too many deadzones lacking fog, music or scary things during opening weekend.

NOW - fast forward to Oct. 5. It was POURING for the first hour we were there, which meant the park was pretty deserted. The longest wait we had all night was 30 minutes to ride the Mummy. All the houses had a 10 minute wait at the max. Dead Silence actually had a 0 minute wait when we walked by, and some guys actually pushed us to go inside it was so empty. This of course makes for a great park experience, because we were able to do 7 houses (Home for Christmas was closed??), 4 rides and 2 shows (Bill n Ted's - which is EXCELLENT this year - and Rocky Horror) in the period of 6 hours. Pretty impressive.

Universal also fixed a lot of issues that I had from the first week - the added more fog machines, more cast members (the Mummy area was packed), another scarezone in the Shrek area, and more videos accompanying the houses. Plus, the 3D glasses for Jack's Funhouse actually had an HHN design on it this time around (the first week they were just plain).

Now... on to my thoughts on individual houses, if you're so inclined: Right this way... )

Overall, I thought the houses were MUCH better than last year, but Universal needs to focus their efforts/money on bringing back the atmosphere overall. Leave the expensive movie characters behind and spend more money on elaborate scarezones. The scarezones are an important part of the experience, especially on nights when the lines for the houses are ridiculous. Scarezones of the past were clever and well-planned. That needs to happen again. It was too easy to feel "safe" this year.

    Howl-O-Scream Review
I went to the Busch Gardens "Howl-O-Scream" event last night. Impressed.
But not totally as good as other years.
The 3-D house was not as "Trippy" as other years. They rethemed it and it does not seem to work.
"After Hours" was just over the top. Fantastic!
The "Ravers" had light sticks at the end of elastics, when they flung them at you and snapped back, it created a fun reaction with guests. I got a kick out of it.
Trapped in the walls" actually has walls that move, and somehow taked guests into sections that dead end.
And you realise "Your trapped in the walls" Fantastic! So you turn around to rejoin the moving line of people.
They try allot of very clever ways to catch you off guard.
People dressed as Trees and Busches is always a fun scare.
There was another Guest with a Baby in her arms walking around. Only when she walked past you, her baby was really a Monster puppet who attacked you. Brilliant!
There was also a lady who was broken off from her group, so she asked if she could walk with us. We said "Sure"
And as we walked through the house, one of the Monsters grabbed her, killed her and drug her off.
She was a plant! Brilliant again! It's these clever ideas that really work well.
You can tell BG spends allot of time comming up with clever ideas since they do not have a Million dollar budget.
And the decoration and details in the sets were so well done, it was almost overkill. We had to go through some of them a couple of times just to make sure we did not miss anything.
The houses were all also very long. It took at least 10 to 15 minuets to get through them.
They had about 4 Scare Zones.
Lots of interactive areas with animatronic Skulls and skeletons speaking to guests, that was new.
If you enjoy HHN, I highly recomend HOS as well. They are both great events.

I enjoy HHN every year. Even thought there were a few interesting parts of the event this year, overall it was not as good as other years.
Those of us who do not work at Universal, and cannot afford to go several times as the rest of you do, we can only manage to see what we can in one night. And with the poor crowd flow, its almost impossible to see more then 2 or 3 an evening.
I hope some of the people reading these reviews decide to listen to these very accurate comments and try to improve on them next year as apposed to arrogantly blow them off.
Not 'everyone' loves it this year. Not everyone 'hates' it. But I did notice a very long line of complaints at Guest relations this year when I went. And that line was almost as long as one for the haunted houses. And they were mostly based on "Quality"
Listen, learn, improve. We are all fans of HHN and just want it to be as good as it can be. This year could have been ALLOT better.
And bring back the Story Teller. :)
And Busch Gardens was voted "above" Universals last year. I have been to both and even though BG does not have the budget HHN does. It does seem much more clever, creative and often very scary.
Cypres Gardens in not that bad. Go check it out if you have not done so yet.

    See you next year!
    Hauntedly Yours,

    Still a HHN fan. :)

    "How sweet... fresh meat!"
Hello boils and gouls! My name is Kelsey and I just moved to the Orlando area about a month ago. I aboslutely LOVE horror movies and I've always wanted to go to HHN, so I'm definitely going to take advantage of my stay here to go at least once!

As a gift to all you, here's the solution for the "What Is It?"/The Thing puzzle:

    1. Click on the "What Is It?" trailer in the Carnival map
    2. You'll notice there's a keypad... you need to enter a four-digit code to access the video
    3. Go back to the map menu. Click on Jack's truck and search for the floppy in the upper left corner
    4. Click the floppy: You'll find a computer that displays information about the expedition
    5. Eventually the screen will flash: "ERROR 3113"
    6. Go back to the trailer and enter 3113 into the keypad

I hope to get to know you guys, and maybe I'll run into one of you at the parks!

    Once inside do this.
    1) Click on the knob on the bottom left side of the chainsaw.
    2) Press the round button next to the ripcord twice (2).
    3) Click the switch at the top rear of the Chainsaw.
    4) Pull the ripcord three (3) times.

Once inside you will find a puzzle wheel.
Go back to the “JS” map page and take another look at that strange stamp with the Gothic Ankh symbol on the stamp, because that’s what you need to make with the code wheel to gain entry.

Questions about taking pictures and video during HHN
I don't want to break any rules, or cause any of the scaracters any problems. And since this is my first year I want to make sure I have lots of memories! So here are my questions:

    1. I know you shouldn't use flash photography in the houses, but is nightvision on a camcorder ok? My camera picks up very well in the dark without any lights emmiting from it whatsoever (except for the little green "On" light, of course, which I can cover up). So, would that be ok? Or do they even allow cameras into the houses?

    2. If you shouldn't blind the scaracters in the houses with flashes, what about the ones in scarezones? Is it better to ask first, if they're looking at the camera? I would think if they weren't looking at the camera, say they were just walking around and I flashed a picture, it would be fine. Am I right about all this? I don't want to blind a stilt walker and cause them to tumble over!

Universal Orlando confirmed with Screamscape this afternoon the existence of The Thing – Assimilation as one of their most creative haunts this year. We were fortunate enough to chat with T.J. Mannarino (Director of Entertaiment Design) and Michael Burnett (Prosthetics and Makeup Supervisor) who both revealed a long time love for this classic film that will be celebrating it’s 25th Anniversary this year. It was interesting to note that they’ve actually talked about bringing The Thing to life in a variety of forms over the years, but they felt that this year the time was right.
While they were not willing yet to officially announce the location of the of the haunt yet, they did tell us that the events of the story they are trying to tell takes place in today’s world in Florida, 25 years after the events took place in Outpost 31. From the sounds of things soon after the events in the film took place, teams were sent in to recover, analyze, catalog and put into storage whatever they could find to determine just what had happened before the arctic base was abandoned. Today the remains of Outpost 31 have been reopened for new scientific study in a new industrial base theme, as they try to harvest whatever information they can from the remains of the creature.
True to the film we will see many classic creatures return such as the severed head with the spider legs and possibly the infected dog. However it’s been 25 years and the creature has had time to evolve into all new forms as well. They promise you will encounter creatures of all shapes and sizes and as you can see in the images to the right, their creature shop is already hard at work.
They’ve done their homework before starting off on this task as well, pulling up reference material from the shooting of the film, the plans for the sets and creatures, as well as talking with people who were involved in the creation of the original film. Unlike other houses that are populated by people who jump out and scare you, The Thing will also be full of new creatures run as ‘puppets’ by human operators rather than automated machines triggered by motion sensors.
If you’ve seen the film, you know how the elements of fire and ice fit into the story and there will be effects involving both in the attraction, as well as a conflict between other elements such as technology vs. strength.
The have a true love for The Thing and they really want to bring it to life to tell their all new story. In fact one of the first decisions they made was that they needed to keep the same style of ominous soundtrack score that the film was known for and is immediately recognized by any fan of the film. Those long synthesizer droning notes punctuated by a digital sounding heartbeat go a long way to setting up a great atmosphere for terror. I know I can’t wait to see it myself.
