A MODERATE ASSORTMENT OF MOTTOES
The meek will inherit the earth....and we're prepared to take civil action against anyone who stands in our way.
Taking moderation to extremes...and bringing a plate to share.
This Livejournal community was inspired by Jon Carroll's article here.
The article is a satire that draws upon the principles of the Unitarian Universalist Association (UUA).
Mr. Carroll's article describes a "Unitarian Jihad" who are dedicated to the following principles:
random acts of kindness (including but not limited to hugs and cookies),
occasional outbreaks of silliness and kindhearted fun (including trout costumes),
moderation,
reasonableness,
the separation of personal faith from political belief,
and coordinated social action.
The article's blending of principles, philosophical and governing, from the UUA, with the idea of a "jihad," a holy war, struck many in this community as speaking directly to our sense that the world is much in need of moderation in all areas of public, national, and international life. No mockery of any institution or group is intended in our borrowing of the name of Jon Carroll's group.
Although this community acknowledges the inspirational role played by Jon Carroll and, by extension, the Unitarian Universalist Association, we are neither affiliated with Jon Carroll nor the UUA, nor are they in any way responsible for this community existence, language, or actions. No governing or institutional relationship exists.
This community is not a congregation. This community is a loosely-knit coalition of members, including members of the UUA and other churches and religious traditions as well as agnostics and atheists, who can affirm our respect for and belief many of the UUA's principles.
We support:
The inherent worth and dignity of every person;
Justice, equity and compassion in human relations;
Acceptance of one another and encouragement to spiritual growth;
A free and responsible search for truth and meaning;
The right of conscience and the use of the democratic process;
The goal of world community with peace, liberty, and justice for all;
Respect for the interdependent web of all existence of which we are a part.
