My newspaper column on the Knoxville tragedy
On the UU church shootings from last weekend -- giving people unfamiliar with Unitarian Universalism a quick primer on who we are, about the climate that led us to this point (and why in my opinion this was sad, but not surprising), why it's a mistake to think our gentle nature means we're weak, and where the hope is in such a situation.

I was particularly proud of the last paragraph, which came to me after I thought I was finished and was getting ready to e-mail the piece to the op-ed guys:

And when he gets a fair trial instead of a lynch mob, possibly with a public defender provided for him at no cost, then serves his time under humane conditions, he can get back to us on all the ways liberals have made his life more difficult.

That could have been a column of its own, in fact. And it might be, down the road.

Excellent! Oh, I see, it's a regular column you do! There's using an old photo?

Yeah, they're using an old photo -- despite my having sent someone in our online department the correct photo two or three times now.

I write a column about every four or five weeks. It used to be weekly, but the work load is such that monthly's about all I manage now. Well, that and a daily blog on religious history for the newspaper, syndicated at [info]tippitt_godstuf (sic).

Monthly is still pretty good! Most of my letters to the editor get posted, especially if I write about something newsworthy and current, but I seldom find the time.

We have a member who writes a column every other week, but I don't know that he ever mentioned Unitarian Universalism. He did mention our author forum, which got some people in, but having a write-up a month in advance for the Washington Post works best - we need to get our act together to have it ready more than a month in advance.
