Stop Reading: Go Get Gas NOW
They are cutting off our gas pipeline due to damage from Katrina (as best I can piece together from the various different news sources). Charlotte already had their gas supply cut off at 7 pm.

There is some panic all over NC as can be seen by some of the following emails that have crossed my inbox:
Here in Gaston Co - cars are lined out on to the streets. I got in line behind a Mount Holly police officer - he was told to top off his police cruiser. A woman had stopped and bought several 5 gallon plastic containers to fill up. Another gas station oddly did not have cars - went there but the pumps were closed. The TV news have reported that the gas pipelines have suffered damage and will be back online in a while - also that NC will run out of gas. There is a gossmar thin veneer covering a simmering panic - you can see it in the face of the people at gas lines.

So the word in Charlotte is no gas after 7 pm today for 2 days!!!
People are flying to gas station every where trying to get in line..ok
so I have 3/4 of a tank and I will be ok for while but the blueberry
hike may be out of my drive..dang it..Any other area suffering this gas
craze????

I figure that a good deal of you are planning to drive home for Labor Day, despite the fact that we have classes, and so I thought I'd pass along the tidbit. Easly (the gov.) says, according to WRAL.com, that the shortage will last through Labor Day.

I don't know that they are "cutting" it per se. I've been trying to get more bits and pieces from the news but most of what I can find is from the WRAL link I posted above. Apparently, News 14 is telling a different and less complete story.

What I've heard is that they are just going to let the supply run out whenever it runs out.

They apparently extended the curfew on gas in Charlotte until 8 pm.

Cause that's exactly what we need right now: a crazy panic on gas.

How about doing what it says in the article--conserve fuel and try not to drive unless you have to. Gas prices are really high right now anyways, so I'd wait it out if you can.

That's what I plan to do. I posted so that those who had to go home for Labor Day didn't think, "I'll fill up right before my trip."

As I explained to someone, we are going to have a crazy panic on gas one way or another. The only thing that not rushing the pumps right now is going to do is postpone the panic. After all, a 5-7 day's supply on Sunday lasts until Thursday or Saturday, depending. And that is with normal useage. And Easely as much as assured us that it would be fixed after Monday.

I was listening to NPR this morning. They had some sort of expert on there who was basically saying that if people only bought gas like they usually do there would be no problem as there should be plenty of gas to go around. However, rumors and panicked behavior (i.e., people saying things like "GO GET GAS NOW!!!") can in and of themselves cause shortages and more panicking. Apparently, even on a normal day, if everybody went to fill up their tanks, stations would run out. I have to wonder if Easley telling people to conserve has in fact only made the situation worse.

I drove by the gas stations near the intersection of Main and Weaver in Carrboro last night around 10:30pm and they were packed. Obviously, the rumors and panic extend well beyond LJ.

Easley /definitely/ caused a panic. As soon as you tell people to use something less, they assume it's about to be completely gone. Spinx Exxon in Carrboro is already out of regular fuel. I topped off today just because everyone else is panicking and I figured if I actually needed it later, the panic setting in would ruin it for me (thus perpetuating the cycle, I know!), but on the news this morning they said by Monday we should be resupplying and prices will drop back to normal (which still sucks, but hey, better than $3.299/gal, right?). Best thing to do is just not drive for no reason, group together errands, and carpool until this thing blows over.

I got gas in Cary at 6pm and there were no lines at all, at none of the gas stations I saw.

Lucky you. Just be happy that it didn't happen to you - by the way, how much was gas in Cary? Apparently in Asheville it's over $3. I haven't driven by a gas station today so I don't know.

I can't remember, had my daughter with me complaining about her juice box. But I know it was under $3.

I just heard this morning from my supervisor that Asheville's all out. Her daughter goes to UNCA and tried to fill up this morning but every place was out. Her mother also lives out there and can't find any gas. My supervisor suggested that her daughter go by the airport, because they need gas for rental cars, etc. and she was able to fill up for something like $3.49 a gallon. But even that will be gone soon.

Alright, here's what I've heard:

The gaslines are down because North Carolina's two main pipelines start in Texas and run through areas Katrina damaged most. So power's out at the pump stations that keep it flowing. As of last night they were rushing out generators to one of the pipelines and are trying to restore power to, well, everywhere. Once the Southeast region's power is back on like normal, a good many of the problems being faced in the aftermath should lessen up.

Gas prices. Around Airport Road, prices were 2.79/gallon. Other places were 2.99. As of Wednesday evening, don't know about today. I've been told Raleigh's over 3.00.

Probably a good idea to just take a bus to Blockbuster, grab some popcorn and movies and chill for the weekend.
