I definitely need a little help here...
Hi everyone,

Right, so I am one of the lucky ones who somehow got the W32/Mytob.lJ@mm viruses. I have been kicked off of the network and e-mailed a list of things to do. The problem-- I don't know what the hell I am doing. First, can anyone tell me how to download Microsoft Critical Patches (I'm in a dorm, and can't access the Microsoft Windows Update site in the computer labs because I am not an Admin.) They are having me download the Stinger program and Virus Scan 8, both of which I think (well, I hope!) I can handle...

Also, I've been sent two similar e-mails, with one VERY big difference. The first said that I would need to completely wipe out my hard drive in order to be re-instated back on to the network; the second, which came not two minutes later, just said I needed to install some antivirus programs and shoot RESNET an e-mail with my Stinger text and my post-install from Virus Scan as attachments. So, which is which (crosses fingers for the latter). Also, how long after I send this e-mail (if I am lucky and that is all I need to do) should I expect to be back online? Help!

Sorry for how long and complicated this e-mail is, but I have two major midterms next week... that means I am flipping out, just a little bit!

EDIT: I'm back on... hooray! Still, one more question. I had to run home today for a wedding, and won't be back in Ann Arbor until Sunday. The e-mail that told me that I had been reconnected also told me I had to update my Windows Updates "within 5 seconds" because my computer is still "vulnerable to attack." If I have no Internet Windows open, will the computer be okay for two days (I left it on...) Thanks!

Probably running an antivirus program and removing the virus is enough to let you back on the network.

BUT if the program doesn't find or can't remove the virus, then you'll probably need to wipe your drive.

Also, in the future: get a virus scanning program and download updates regularly. AVG is my favorite because it's both free and catches stuff McAfee/Norton don't catch.

Yeah, I learned that the hard way... I thought my McAfee program was doing just fine until all of this happened!

Thanks for the input :)

AVG is the best.

When I got kicked off the network freshman year I got the critical patches disk from the front desk and installed the updates that way. Then I went to a computing site, downloaded Virus Scan and Stinger to my flash drive (a CD-R would work too), and installed them on my computer. Then I sent those files to RESNET and was back on the network within a day or so. It's really easy; I'm a dumbass when it comes to technology and I managed to do it.

You have to do this procedure anyway, even if you do need to reformat. The fact that the second email was the one requiring fewer tasks makes me think you will not actually need to wipe out the hard drive. To be sure, you can email RESNET with questions and they'll respond fairly quickly.

if you have trouble, just make your RCSC help you with it. they can't touch your computer, but they CAN tell you what to do.

I used to work for Resnet, you need to just clean the drive of the virus then run virusscan again and send them an email with the virus log attached (it should be saying 0 viruses). Then they'll let you back on.

I would never recommend their version of McAfee to anyone; it's total fucking garbage. It's a hacked up version of the regular program, and it did weird things to my computer (for some reason it liked to max out my processor every few minutes). I like pc-cillin, but that's just a personal preference.

A blessing in disguise? Now you can study for your midterms without the distraction of a computer.

Haha... probably true. AIM and facebook are just way too tempting when Physics is staring you in the face!

you should all get a mac. then, when you get a virus-ridden e-mail, you can just laugh at all your Windows-using friends and enjoy your awesome computer.

NOD32 is far and away the most effective and advanced virus scanning program for Windows. It's one of the few pieces of commercial software truly worth its price.
