MADISON, Wis. -- The University of Wisconsin has put its marching band on probation after receiving reports of severe misconduct during a trip to Michigan last month.

The school is not releasing details on what happened during the trip to the Sept. 23 game. But Chancellor John Wiley described it in a letter to the band's director as behavior "that can be seen as anything from boorish and offensive to patently dangerous and unlawful."

I wasn't at the Wisconsin game, so I have no idea what this supposed misconduct entails -- perhaps someone could shed some light on this? Just curious.

Their whole presentation seemed to revolve around alcohol or getting more alcohol. I was in the stands to watch postgame and they not only played "Tequila" but all of their movements resembled drinking.

Also, their parade back to Revelli (the band hall, the two bands recepted with each other) was a joke. At some times, some of the brass players would break away from the band, surround a Michigan fan, and blow an obnoxious note at them. And one of their vocals was "I want to be inebriated!"

This may not seem like a big deal, but they have no class or decorum. I seem to remember a similar incident where the last time they came to Michigan (which was several years ago) members of their band tried to steal the piano out of Revelli Hall when they were recepting with our band. So therefore, they were suspended from ever coming here.

I got here from a news site sporting this blog. To me, the idea of stealing a piano onto a bus.... seems completely rediculous. Ive been in and seen those coach busses. With a band on them, who would have enough space for a piano? How on earth would one go about stealing a piano? Am i the only one who sees the physical and logistical improbabilities of stealing a piano?

I don't really know how someone could fit a piano onto a coach bus, but I do agree with you, that it seems completely "ridiculous". But from what I understand, they were actually trying to get it onto their equipment truck which seems that much more probable. And in all reality, it probably wouldn't be that difficult to steal the piano from the MMB hall because with hundreds of people milling in and out of the building, it would be easy to overlook a couple of people trying to wheel the piano away. That's how they got their invitation to come perform at Michigan revoked.

It's funny how the actions of a few dumbasses can ruin it for everyone.

i know many people in the band (yes I go to UW) and all their equipment goes under the busses in the cargo compartments, not in a truck seperately. However, I must say most legend is somewhat rooted in truth. I wonder what ACTUALLY went down?

All I know is that people from UW's band were caught wheeling our piano away. What they intended to do with it once they got it out of the building is unknown.

"gratuitous vulgarity, sexualized banter or joking, hazing, or other forms of demeaning conduct." with the mention many of the actions occurred on the bus ride back

aka college men and women acting like they're 12 on the way to the museum

I know they were drinking while they were recepting with us (our band). Our staff refused to let several members of their band back into our hall because of it.

You guys realize "recepting" and "recept" are not real words even though Nix uses them, right? The present tense verb form of reception is receive, not recept.

Sorry you're the victim of this; it's not just you. This has bothered me for four+ years.

Actually, recept is a real word, just not a verb that is relevant to the subject at hand. It's a psychological something or other.

It's also a word in Swedish!

recept, noun: an idea formed by the repetition of similar percepts, as successive percepts of the same object

sounds psychological to me... and definitely not relevant.

I never apoligise for making up a word, saying a word wrong or mispelling it. If you knew what I meant then clearly the language I used communicated the ideas I intended which, I believe, is the concept of language.

Its not just you, I just get sick of people who spend way too much time and effort correcting others on their choice of language.

I don't think it makes you stupid either. (In fact, it's been proven that there is no link between spelling ability and intelligence.) But I also think it IS an important thing.

Well, if its just posting on the internets...like lj...then its just a matter of courtesy. After all, it doesn't take that much time to use spellcheck, and it would save whoever's reading any confusion. But then again, this is the internets.

However, if you've got spelling errors on emails to profs or companies that might hire you, then yeah, it would be important. But
