Trying to enter the real world...but they won't let me. [15 Jul 2009|10:08am]

twcwar313
[ mood | anxious ]

Is it just me or is the job market really really discriminatory towards new graduates?  Every job posting I get is like "Bachelor's degree required with minimum three years experience in related field."  How the hell am I supposed to get three years experience in a related field if no one in that field will hire people right of college?  WTF AM I SUPPOSED TO DO? THE FEAR OF FAILURE IS PARALYZING! SOMEONE HIRE ME!

OK, just had to get that out.  But seriously, I have applied to three jobs that I thought I was a perfect fit for (I had all the required AND desired qualifications) and I didn't get called back.  And before you ask, no, my resume/cover letter is not garbage.  I've had the Career Center and several very successful co-workers--who got internships at Google and Microsoft--look at it and they all thought it was great.

So any tips on what to do?  I have two jobs that are still up in the air, that I am supposed to hear from in the next few weeks.  What can I do to better my chances?  Any up-and-coming cities that you guys would recommend to try looking into?

(P.S. I'm an environment major, looking for jobs in environmental education/conservation and/or academia.)

short-term storage [13 Jul 2009|01:54pm]

sasha8489
Hi! I am switching apartments in August, but the lease on my current apartment ends about 2 weeks before I am able to move into the other apartment. Does anyone know what sort of options exist for short-term storage? The current landlord has already said that we can't pay to stay longer and there are currently people subleasing the apartment I'm moving into (it's a may to may lease) and they don't seem too keen on letting me leave my stuff in there.

I graduated in May but have been forwarding my umich mail to gmail forever. Now gmail's unable to locate the mail saying, "mailbox does not exist." I thought our umich mail never expired and that as long as you forwarded, things would get through.

Can anyone give me any insight on this? This is going to suck, because I have so many accounts linked to my umich one.

FYI about Courtyards Apartments [09 Jul 2009|01:25pm]
evilsporkman
Today, Courtyards maintenance knocked "for a while" and then entered my apartment when I didn't answer because I was asleep. This was sometime around or before 11 AM. I received no prior notice of their impending visit, and they looked rather surprised to see me when I emerged from my room after showering. I'm subletting, but the office knows about it. (They needed to paint my ex-roommate's room.)

Just thought y'all might be interested when you consider where to live.

Off-Campus Housing [11 Jun 2009|09:43am]
imani127
Can I get a recommendation on off-campus housing?  I'm looking for a place near central campus where mostly grad or post doc students live.  Are there places where mostly grad or post doc students live?  Anyone ever live at 110 Hill Street or 801 Miller?  Can you tell me which landlords to avoid or places to avoid?  I heard I should avoid Mckinley properites, but they seem to own a lot....   I'm coming from Miami Florida and will be at UM in mid-August, any ideas will help thanks

Orientation tour route [01 Jun 2009|01:21pm]
evilsporkman
So I posted a while ago about making sure incoming freshman find out about UmBus, and the result was that there's no way I'm going to get fliers to stay up for very long in South Quad.

Does anyone remember 1) what day(s) of orientation they drag the engineers to North Campus and 2) which bus stops are the start and end of the bus trip? I would assume it's C.C. Little and Pierpont, but it might be the BIR Building or the FXB for the destination. The first orientation is this Sunday, and I'd like to make sure that the engineering frosh get a good chance to notice some fliers when they take the bus from Central to North on the campus tour. The tour route, if there is one, would be nice to know too.

EDIT: also, does anyone know what orientation dates actually have Engineering advising? http://www.onsp.umich.edu/incoming_freshmen/orientation/fall.html indicates that it's not necessarily all summer.

This is a long shot, but I'm looking for someone to take over my sublet from July to August. I'm paying $325 (all utilities except electricity) for my own bedroom in an apartment on Thayer and Lawrence. Two roommates, one bathroom. Let me know if you're interested or would like more info!

new alumni! [03 May 2009|12:04pm]

swiviol
So, as of yesterday, I am an alum of the University of Michigan :).

My question is this: what can we do/not do now that we are alums?  I will be in A2 over the summer so it'd be good to know this.
IE: can we still check out books from the libraries?  Or even log in to the library computers, and/or use the wireless?
How about printing?  My printing allotment now says "400 pages remaining" - I wonder if we get 400 pages for life or something?

Thanks :).

Summer CCRB Membership for Grad Students? [03 May 2009|06:01am]

danman3459
Hey y'all,

I've been tipped off that during the summer (and spring), grad students (I'm a first year LSA Ph.D. student) cannot use the ccrb without paying, even if they are enrolled for the fall. Is that right?

Also, what's up with the heat in there? Last weekend when it was hot, it was really spicy in there. Does the AC kick in eventually?

Thanks.

Hi everybody,

I am Jenneken, a PhD student at Wageningen University in The Netherlands.
Upcomming summer I hope to enroll in the ICPSR summer program and will be staying in Ann Arbor for 2 months.
Since I don't kow anything about UM or Ann Arbour I am desperatly seeking for info and tips.

Especially about how to arrange housing for me and my friend for those 2 months (approx 14 june to 14 august)
the link I got from the summerschool website is http://www.cms.housing.umich.edu/Accommodations/short_term.htm
but I have no idea wether this would be a good option, maybe there are sublets available and I could help out someone who wants to sublet as well.

hope you can help me out somewhat!

thanks a lot!

I know this has been asked before but there was nothing in the memories.

Options for spring/summer fitness classes? My room mate and I are interested in taking yoga, or some other low-key fitness thing. I looked at U-Move but there is no indication that they have spring or summer classes.

We are both UM students but neither of us will be enrolled for the spring/summer terms.

Has anyone taken ENGLISH 350 - Literature in English to 1660 with Douglas Trevor? Middle Ages/Renaissance lit classes intimidate me because I don't have much experience with lit from that period, so I'm looking for a good introductory class.

I'm also trying to decide between
ENGLISH 362 - The American Novel with Joshua Miller or
ENGLISH 473 - Topics in American Literature with Lisa Makman (concepts of adolescence in 19th and 20th century AmLit)

Both Miller and Makman have good reviews on RateMyProf and they both sound like cool classes to me. I register tomorrow - Eek, HELP!

ride or public transportation advice desired (cross-posted) [02 Apr 2009|10:22pm]

ksledgemoore
[ mood | grateful ]

Hi there! Next weekend (April 10/11), my husband and I plan on going to Pittsburgh to meet up with family. We would drive, but the catch is that I'm already going to be in Oberin, OH (between Sandusky and Cleveland, near Elyria) on Thursday and Friday. It's halfway to Pittsburgh. Ideally, my husband could meet me somewhere in that area and we could continue onto Pittsburgh together, saving me the 5 hour roundtrip of going back to Ann Arbor to pick him up. I'd take him to Oberlin with me on Thursday but he is teaching.

So, I have a few questions:
1) Does anyone know of any public transportation to the Cleveland area that my husband would be able to take on Friday? We noticed you could get there on Greyhound by making two transfers, but at 7 hours total trip that seems a bit excessive. Amtrak will do it with just one transfer in Toledo, but the trip is overnight and it gets into the Cleveland area (Elyria, actually, which is more convenient) at 1:58am. That's no good. So, any other options would be appreciated.
2) Is anyone actually driving in that direction on Friday, April 9th? My husband might be interested in a rideshare, paying for gas (and maybe more, depending on how close you could get him and at what time.)

I am cross-posting this to a few different communities. I apologize in advance for the spam.

B-School Classes from Rackham? [30 Mar 2009|06:27pm]
evilsporkman
I'm thinking about trying to take a pair of B-School classes next semester to satisfy the cognate requirement (gotta take 4 credits of grad classes not having to do with computers), specifically BE 501 and LHC 509. Rackham will accept the credits, provided I get into the classes, right? Also, I've heard that the B-school has to have its arm twisted to let people from other schools take classes. How hard is that process? Will the fact that I am generally not what computer people refer to as a "suit" put me at a disadvantage?

So I'm transferring in this Fall and my orientation isn't until June 25th which makes me worried that all the classes I want will be full. Do you think I should cancel my orientation and just schedule my appointment with an advisor now instead of waiting, or will there be classes left? I know I don't start until September but I'm trying to stay ahead of things.

Going to be in EQ for freshman orientation this summer? [23 Mar 2009|12:27am]
evilsporkman
Hey, I'm looking for someone who's going to be in EastSouth Quad to help out with freshman orientation this summer (it's been a while, but aren't there RAs in the building?) and is willing to make sure there's a flyer or two or three for UmBus on the bulletin boards. The University seems to be allergic to business (not that I'm making money...yet), so I don't think they'd mention it in the same breath as Magic Bus at orientation.

Come to think of it, it would be nice to have a couple postings in Markley for the Summer Bridge Program students too.

Hey all,

I am trying to determine my schedule for next semester (p.s: the Fall courseguides are online if you didn't know yet!) and I am thinking I should take a 3 credit, easy Natural Science course.

Have any of you taken Biotechnology and Society with Schiefelbein? It seems like an interesting but easy class, though ratemyprofessor.com has a lot of people saying it is difficult to ace his tests. Thoughts??

(P.S, I will be taking Stats 350, Intensive German 2, and UROP on top of it, so I really want a nice, easy class!)

Thanks. x

I'm sure these things have been asked 1000 times, but there's nothing in the memories (*coughadminscoughlol*), and I can't find how to search this journal with the new lj stuff (help?).

I guess my question is for any engineering alumni/people in the know... This year the big commencement starts at 10, and the engineering one is the same day at 3. But we have to be at Crisler for the Engin on by 1:45 for seating, etc. Thoughts on how long the break is going to be between the ceremonies? If the general commencement goes 'til 11:30, maybe lunch could happen, but if it's any later than that I'm stuck with a family to entertain for a couple hours and nowhere to do it.

Relatedly, how is the traffic on commencement day?

Hiring: Part time student temp for Linux sys admin work [04 Mar 2009|09:12am]

heartirony
The University of Michigan Computing Environemnt (UMCE, part of ITCS) General Purpose Computing Cycles (GPCC) group is looking to fill a student temp position, although hiring is not limited to UM students. Expected salary is $12/hour.

GPCC is reponsible for a number of campus infrastructure services including file storage (OpenAFS), authorization (Kerberos), various general purpose login machines, a general purpose pool of statistics and computational machines, and server backups (TSM). Our temps will have the opportunity to build on their basic unix skills and gain an understanding of large scale unix system administration. Areas for skills growth include general troubleshooting, automation via scripting, and hardware evaluation/testing/deployment.

Projects include ongoing hardware evaluations, burn-in and migration, and large storage management.

This is a great opportunity for anyone interested in large scale, high-availability services.

Requirements:

Candidates should be available for a MINIMUM of 20 hours per week during business hours. Positions are available for up to 40 hours per week. Some work may be required outside business hours especially past 5pm on weekday evenings. If you are only available to work 20 hours afternoon availability will be required. There will be some opportunity for off-site work once staff are ramped up. You must be able to attend a staff meeting from 2:00 to 3:00PM every Tuesday.

You must be able to get to Arbor Lakes in Ann Arbor, MI. A free bus is available if you don't have your own car: <http://pts.umich.edu/taking_the_bus/routes/umhs_intercampus.php>

Familiarity with unix is critical. Candidates should have knowledge of basic unix command line tools (e.g. ls, ps, df, vi, grep, awk) and understand typical file organization strategies (e.g. /etc vs. /var). Experience with bash or perl scripting and radmind is also desirable.

Hardware deployment will be involved so candidates must be able to lift and carry servers weighing up to 50 lbs. They should have experience troubleshooting hardware issues and must have excellent problem solving skills.

Please forward a technical resume to pjessel@umich.edu if you are interested. If you have any questions about the position feel free to e-mail or call 248-396-7014 (mobile). If you are already on the UM campus my office extension is 3-8967.

MTV's True Life - Casting [03 Mar 2009|02:25pm]

mtvtruelife
Hi guys,

My name is Jennifer, and I am a casting associate at MTV.  Right now we are casting for an upcoming episode of the award-winning series True Life.  For this episode, we are looking for people who are at odds with their parents for one reason or another.  The topics we are focusing on are students who are living a more Americanized lifestyle their traditional parents don't understand, students who are practicing a religion that their parents don't support, or  students who are dating someone their parents don’t approve of.  We are also always interested in hearing other stories about what students and their parents don't see eye to eye on.  I  would really appreciate if you could pass it along to anyone else you may know.

If you could have people email their situations to Parents@mtvnmix.com with their name, age, location, phone number, and recent photo of themselves I would really appreciate it.

Thanks, and feel free to message me with any question
Jennifer

Since its initial episode in 1998, MTV's award-winning True Life documentary series has told remarkable real-life stories of young people and the unusual subcultures they inhabit. Whether documenting the lives of gay marriage activists, individuals dealing with obesity, or teens in high school--the True Life series tells its stories solely from the varied voices and points-of-view of its characters--putting the series in the unique position of reflecting the state of youth culture at any given moment.
