[09 Dec 2009|10:50pm] |

Okay, folks, I need your help! I want to get my hair dyed, but don't want to spend a ton of money. Any of you have recommendations about where I can go (preferably close to campus) to get a good dye job? TIA!

| Host a fun & free girls night with lots of free rewards! |
[04 Dec 2009|06:48pm] |
Hey everyone! My name's Toni and I'm from Dearborn. I'm a PartyLite consultant and wanted to inform you about a fun and free girls night with lots of rewards for you. We have CRAZY deals for January, so I wanted to let everyone know so they can take advantage of them.
PartyLite is a company that sells candles, candle holders, home decoration, flameless fragrances, bath and body products, and much more. We also have special products for weddings, special occasions, and fundraisers. Hosting a PartyLite party is very simple and earns you TONS of free stuff! All it takes is an hour out of your time. I can come by whenever is best for you. The party will only last about an hour. An hour is worth all the free stuff you get! Don't even worry about the invites- I'll send out the invites via email or through the mail for you. I'll bring snacks as well. :) Anyways, onto the hostess deals!
I'm currently booking shows after December 18th or shows in January.
December shows hostess rewards include 25% hostess credit, 5 dozen votive candles for $15, and tons more specials including many gifts under $5.
The real place to save money is January though. In January we're running a HUGE special for FIFTY PERCENT hostess credit for only $15!!!!!! What this means is that for $15, you get 50% of the total of your party in product. For example, an average party with ten people sells $400. That means you'd get $200 in product for $15!!!!!! You choose the products you'd like. You can't beat it! We also have 10 dozen tealight candles for $10 in January, and many other specials I can tell you about if you are interested. We also will have the 2010 items available starting December 16th. They aren't up on the website yet, but they are gorgeous! You can check out some examples of our products on our website though. www.partylite.com.
My email address is: Tonijmccann@aol.com. If you have any questions or are interested in a fun, free girls night with lots of great rewards, let me know!
I also have a friend who sells Mary Kay cosmetics, and so we could do a joint Mary Kay and PartyLite party if you are interested in that as well!
Also- if you're looking for a great job where you create your own hours, ask me about becoming a consultant!

| psych majors! |
[03 Dec 2009|03:45pm] |
Hello trusty UM students!
Have any of you taken cognitive psychology (or any other class) with James Hoeffner? I heard the other professor for cognitive is good but I can't take his section, so any of you know much about this one?
Also, are there any GSI's for either cognitive psych or psychopathology you would absolutely nottt recommend?
Also, do any of you know if Seifert has previously offered the Psychology of Creativity? I REALLY want to take this class but all of the sections are already closing. I e-mailed her but she hasn't gotten back to me, too.
THANK YOUUUU! x

| Question about Angell at night |
[24 Nov 2009|01:46pm] |
|
I have to turn in two papers that are due early tomorrow at my professor's offices. Rather than waking up at the crack of dawn because of my horrible procrastination, I was hoping I could drop them off late tonight after I finish them instead. Does anyone know if the door (I heard it has a poster of a puppy on it) leading to the staff offices on the fourth floor of Angell are locked after a certain time? Thanks in advance guys!

| "Origin of Species" copies w/ free 50 pages of toilet paper |
[18 Nov 2009|11:42pm] |
Has anyone actually seen someone handing out copies? U-M is apparently one of the schools being targeted by their campaign (a campaign to circulate copies of The Origin of Species with Ray Comfort's introduction).
FYI, I haven't read the introduction yet - don't know how bad it is, only heard about it. I'm out in Kalamazoo right now until December, far away from campus and all of the superfun activity there... so I'm just wondering if anyone's seen it being handed out. Just curious!
The National Center for Science Education has put together a campaign to counter-campaign which might be helpful for those who were interested.
EDIT: If you don't know what it is, it's a copy of the Origin of Species with a creationist/intelligent design introduction by Ray Comfort, which would be kinda like having Richard Dawkins writing an intro to the bible, but dumber.

| Bumper stickers! |
[11 Nov 2009|02:27pm] |
Hey guys,
would any of you have any extra bumper stickers lying around? Good causes, bad causes, bands, witty slogans...whatever you've got! They also don't need to be full sized stickers--they'll be going on a friend's bike to pretty it up. So maybe if your band/cause/group needs some extra publicity, this would be a lovely bit of marketing. (Right? Right.) I am willing to pay on a sliding scale based on how awesome the stickers are, or bake you cookies, or however you'd prefer. Comment here, or email me: racrosli@umich.edu. Thanks so much!

Face-Painting on the Diag!
Come get your face painted for free this Thursday on the Diag from 10 a.m. - 4 p.m.!
Why? Because this type of merriment is not limited to the 10 and under crowd, despite your strongest beliefs. Your bare faces need colorful paint on them, and the members of the Lloyd Hall Scholars Program's Public Art Club recognize this and are ready to act. So, leave the pride and bring your cheeks!

| Department of Communication Studies... |
[14 Oct 2009|03:08pm] |
I know there have been posts asking about the Communications department/major in the past, but the ones I've found were from almost 3 years ago, and I'm hearing that things have changed. I'm pretty sure that I want to major in Comm, and I'm not a mindless sorority girl, I promise. I'm very interested in the major and what it explores, and I know that U of M's department is nationally ranked and recognized. So, tell me. What's the Communications department like these days? Please, seriously. I had no idea that it even used to be less-than-perfect in past years before I browsed around here, so I'd like to know. Thanks.

Hello Michigan!
I am an undergrad going to check out the Masters in Public Health program at U Mich this weekened. I am from New Mexico, and have never ventured into the state of Michigan, so I have a few questions.
First, what is the best way to get from the Detroit airport to Ann Arbor (my flight gets in around 8 pm, need to be on campus by 8 am Saturday).
Second, I am training for a marathon and Sundays are my long runs, so I was wondering if anyone wants to join me for a 10 miler Sunday morning.

Thanks!

| Michigan Waffle Iron? |
[20 Sep 2009|03:36pm] |
I've googled all over and can't find anything--
I want a waffle iron that makes the block M like they have in the dorms. Is it possible to buy one anywhere? I live in Seattle so someplace online is probably the best bet for me. Maybe somebody could swipe one from a dorm and mail it to me?
thanks!

[14 Sep 2009|10:35pm] |
|
I've been having a lot of shoulder and neck pain lately. Is there anyplace on campus or around town that offers (reasonably priced) massages? Or is there something similar at UHS? Because if there's something at UHS then I don't have to pay for it, and this poor college student would love that! Thanks!

| McKinley properties? |
[24 Aug 2009|10:36pm] |
Hey,
I looked through the memories and did some googling, but didn't get anything as conclusive as I would have liked. How is McKinley? My boyfriend and I are planning on signing a lease with them tomorrow at their Medical Center Complex on Maiden Lane. The apartment looked pretty nice, and was far cleaner than any of the places in the student ghettos that we've looked at.
The few results that did turn up on google seemed pretty negative (car jackings, theft; evidently Maiden Lane is Ann Arbor's vehicular crime den?) ... can anyone give me any other input/reassure me that my car is not going to be vandalized? I currently live in a mold-filled shithole maintained by Dale Newman (the front stair evidently also just broke), so we're thinking that at least it's better than here, but now I'm kind of nervous.
Thanks!

Every year I get overwhelmed by the amount of courses that sound like they could be amazing. This year it was all English courses that caught my eye (besides I want to get through these requirements asap!) and now I'm trying to get my schedule arranged so I don't have to go to a million classes the first week for nothing. Plus a couple of them overlap and I don't want to get dropped from a great class because I'm sitting in a boring one.
Anyways, to make a short story long, does anyone know anything about any of the courses below or the professors who teach them (especially the first two)?
ENGLISH 473 - Topics in American Literature with Makman ENGLISH 464 - Studies in Individual Authors: Virginia Woolf with Zemgulys ENGLISH 305 - Introduction to the English Language with Curzan ENGLISH 315 - Women and Literature: Desperate Literary Housewives with Mesle ENGLISH 317 - Literature and Culture: Contemporary Political Fiction with Ganeshananthan ENGLISH 325 - Art of the Essay with Hinkin ENGLISH 331 - Film Genres and Types: American Musical with Bauland
Thanks in advance!

Does the university send you anything to confirm you have actually graduated? I mean, besides the eventual diploma. I'm starting to freak out because a class I just transferred like a month ago still hasn't appeared on my unofficial transcript on Wolverine Access and I've tried emailing the auditors numerous times over the past few weeks to no avail...

| SportsLife 2009 College Football Season Preview: The SEC |
[19 Aug 2009|02:28pm] |
The conference that is seemingly the king of the mountain in NCAA football, the Southeastern Conference, has yet again produced the National Champion, for the third time in three years, and once again, it’s the Tim Tebow & Urban Meyer-led Florida Gators. It truly must be great to be a Florida Gator, but will it be again this year? Do the Crimson Tide of Alabama have the bodies to make up for their losses in players moving on to the NFL? Can the LSU Tigers once again let the nation hear the roar of the Bayou Bengals? Are the Bulldogs of UGA ready to finally be the National Title threat they have been billed as? Who are the dark horses? With no further ado, we begin our 2009 College Football Preview with the SEC. READ MORE HERE.

| Math 131 - Conceptual Mathematics |
[06 Aug 2009|12:13am] |
|
I registered for this class even though I tested into a lower math class. I only need 1 math class since I am in CASL and I really want to get through this. The only requirements for the class are 1 year high school algebra and geometry. In high school I did take this, but that was 3 years ago. I also took a pre-algebra class in college (I tested into it). The class really doesn't look that hard, but I am afraid since I didn't test into it I am going to be in over my head. On the other hand I only need one math class, and this is the only one I can take without taking a pre-req. Your thoughts?

| Short-term Housing |
[27 Jul 2009|08:32pm] |
Has anyone had any luck with short-term housing? I'm looking for an apartment for right around 6 months (just a one bedroom/one bathroom). Has anyone done anything like this/is it possible? If so, any recommendations? I'm not super concerned with price as long as it's not outrageous. I work on campus, so getting in without a car would be nice, but I could drive in if I needed to.
Thanks a ton! Ryan

[27 Jul 2009|09:20am] |
Hey there UMStudents,
Any know if grad students can check out moving carts? My ugrad school had these big carts people could check out for an hour to move stuff. They had them in the dorms, but anyone could check them out. I'm hoping find something similar to move next week (not to or from a dorm).
Failing that, anyone have any great ideas on how to move a small apartment's worth of stuff a couple blocks without a car?
Thanks in advance.

Is it just me or is the job market really really discriminatory towards new graduates? Every job posting I get is like "Bachelor's degree required with minimum three years experience in related field." How the hell am I supposed to get three years experience in a related field if no one in that field will hire people right of college? WTF AM I SUPPOSED TO DO? THE FEAR OF FAILURE IS PARALYZING! SOMEONE HIRE ME!
OK, just had to get that out. But seriously, I have applied to three jobs that I thought I was a perfect fit for (I had all the required AND desired qualifications) and I didn't get called back. And before you ask, no, my resume/cover letter is not garbage. I've had the Career Center and several very successful co-workers--who got internships at Google and Microsoft--look at it and they all thought it was great.
So any tips on what to do? I have two jobs that are still up in the air, that I am supposed to hear from in the next few weeks. What can I do to better my chances? Any up-and-coming cities that you guys would recommend to try looking into?
(P.S. I'm an environment major, looking for jobs in environmental education/conservation and/or academia.)

Hi! I am switching apartments in August, but the lease on my current apartment ends about 2 weeks before I am able to move into the other apartment. Does anyone know what sort of options exist for short-term storage? The current landlord has already said that we can't pay to stay longer and there are currently people subleasing the apartment I'm moving into (it's a may to may lease) and they don't seem too keen on letting me leave my stuff in there.

| FYI about Courtyards Apartments |
[09 Jul 2009|01:25pm] |
Today, Courtyards maintenance knocked "for a while" and then entered my apartment when I didn't answer because I was asleep. This was sometime around or before 11 AM. I received no prior notice of their impending visit, and they looked rather surprised to see me when I emerged from my room after showering. I'm subletting, but the office knows about it. (They needed to paint my ex-roommate's room.)
Just thought y'all might be interested when you consider where to live.

| Orientation tour route |
[01 Jun 2009|01:21pm] |
So I posted a while ago about making sure incoming freshman find out about UmBus, and the result was that there's no way I'm going to get fliers to stay up for very long in South Quad.
Does anyone remember 1) what day(s) of orientation they drag the engineers to North Campus and 2) which bus stops are the start and end of the bus trip? I would assume it's C.C. Little and Pierpont, but it might be the BIR Building or the FXB for the destination. The first orientation is this Sunday, and I'd like to make sure that the engineering frosh get a good chance to notice some fliers when they take the bus from Central to North on the campus tour. The tour route, if there is one, would be nice to know too.
EDIT: also, does anyone know what orientation dates actually have Engineering advising? http://www.onsp.umich.edu/incoming_freshmen/orientation/fall.html indicates that it's not necessarily all summer.

[03 May 2009|12:04pm] |
So, as of yesterday, I am an alum of the University of Michigan :).
My question is this: what can we do/not do now that we are alums? I will be in A2 over the summer so it'd be good to know this. IE: can we still check out books from the libraries? Or even log in to the library computers, and/or use the wireless? How about printing? My printing allotment now says "400 pages remaining" - I wonder if we get 400 pages for life or something?
Thanks :).
