The Difference Engine…a steampunk adventure

Sat 11 & Sun 12 July / Manchester Town Hall (part of The Great Indoors)

Travelling from past to future through a landscape of machines and ideas Walk the Plank and Thingumajig Theatre have created an interactive journey through the courtyard of Manchester’s Town Hall. The audience will help inventor and mathematician Charles Babbage find the clues to repair his Difference Engine; solve the spider’s riddles, hidden in the worldwide web; persuade the counting madman to open the gates to the Hall of Shadows…and discover the secret workings of the steampunk arcade.

UK steampunk events

  • Jun. 30th, 2009 at 6:48 PM
Greetings!

So, me and my girlfriend have gotten quite into the whole Steampunk fashion thing and are looking for UK based events (preferably in the North of England, we're based around Manchester).

We have tickets to the Asylum weekend in September, and are really looking forward to it, but were wondering if there were any other planned. Or anywhere outside London that has a regular Steampunk night. We went to an awesome one in Newcastle (Golden Lotus it was called) a while back, something like that would be great.

Look forward to the replies, and hope to see some of you in September!

Skeleton Key

Skeleton Key - Ceramic and Silver Pendant

Thought I'd share my current project with you guys. I'm currently working as artist in residence at a school and have started to encorporate ceramic elements into my jewellery work. Inspired by themes of absence I've been imprinted the clay with old cabinet keys, pen nibs, Victorian printing stamps and other strange metal objects from my own collections. I glazed this piece with a dry mottled green and brown, highlighting the key piece with a little shiny clear glaze. The sterling silver setting has been oxidised to a gunmetal black finish which will wear back with age. I've just done a large batch of white clay and terracotta and tonight I make a batch in porcelain for a mass firing tomorrow. I glaze them all next week which is very exciting!

Anyway, I wondered if anyone had any nice ideas for other things to take impressions from? Thanks!

Gatehoues Gazette #7

  • Jun. 28th, 2009 at 3:13 PM

In response to the discovery of lost Metropolis footage, issue #7 is dedicated to this 1927 classic of silent film and the metropolis in general.

Of course there is a review of the original Metropolis, by Mr Marcius Rauchfuß, as well as an article about the 2001 anime of the same name, by Mr Sigurjón Njálsson. For the latest about what is going on in that other fine city, the Old Smoke called Londontown, we introduce Brigadier Sir Arthur Weirdy-Beardy of The Steampunk Club, while Mr David Townsend is off to farther realms once again, traveling by the Indian Pacific from Perth to Sydney, Australia.

We are also extremely glad to present an exclusive preview of Mr Toby Frost’s upcoming Space Captain Smith novel, Wrath of the Lemming Men!

And it almost goes without saying that this issue features all the columns and features that you might have come to expect from us: Ms Hilde Heyvaert writes her “Steampunk Wardrobe” about ethnic steampunk; Mr Craig B. Daniel dedicates his “Liquor Cabinet” to a story about beer, and Mr Guy Dampier is back with a Quatermass review. More reviews come from Hilde (Unhallowed Necropolis), Mr Trubetskoy (The Court of the Air and Outcry) and Toby Frost (Gormenghast).

Click here or on the image to download this issue!

Newbie introduction

  • Jun. 11th, 2009 at 10:02 AM
Hi, I'm incredibly new to steampunk, so new in fact that I didn't really know what it was until I was procrastinating whilst trying to write my dissertation this year. When I did find it, I was amazed. I thought I was an isolated case! The kind of person who watches Sherlock Holmes for the clothes.

I thought I'd introduce myself to you fine fellows

China Mieville talk in London this July

His name always seems to come up as the one steampunk writer to read…
Just noticed that he is doing a talk at the South Bank on 16 July…

China Mieville reads from and discusses The City and The City.

Hi,

I've cross posted this on steampunk fashion, so my apologies if you've already seen this.

If you live in the Gloucester area or fancy the journey, then this charming museum is sadly having it's collection auctioned off as the couple who run it are having to close it down :(

Abney Park in London

  • May. 2nd, 2009 at 10:55 PM
I took some pictures at the Abney Park concert when they played in London (April 25th) at ElectroWerks. Not the best avenue for any steampunk gig, all in all, since the place was so poorly lit that you couldn't really see what people were wearing.

Photos at Flickr

Which also includes pictures from the AP concert in Toronto and from various museums in London. Yes, this includes a charming picture of Babbages brain in a jar.

Crossposted here and there.
