 | 09:26 pm - Carpooling offer to polling sites on 4 November. Hi there, everyone. :) I hope that this board still has some readers!
I'd like to extend an offer to all UCF Democrats who don't have the ability to drive to polling sites on 4 November. I'll be taking the day off from work to volunteer my time getting people to polling places, and wanted to know if anyone here -- or on campus at all -- needed rides to the polls. If so, please feel free to leave a comment here or to e-mail me at stephanie.kolcz@gmail.com.
I also wanted to know if there was a way to spread the word around campus. I'm not a UCF student myself (I go to SCC), but my boyfriend is, and he's willing to help by posting fliers in places to advertise my help. So if anyone else can help as well, my contact info is up there.
And if you're willing to lend us your car and your services, I'd love to hear from you, too! Please let me know if you're available to carpool, and we'll get something set up. :)
Thanks so much, and happy voting! Obama '08!

 | 08:57 pm - Buying and Selling I have been a horribly absent poster lately, so please feel free to delete if this type of post is no longer permitted.
I am IN NEED OF: 1-3 Graduation Tickets for the College of Sciences. I am more than willing to make an offer and come to you to get them.
I am WANTING TO MOVE AWAY: 1 bedroom available for male or female to sublease in a 3/3 apartment shared with 2 females. The apartment is located in Auvers Villages, located mile or so from University/Semoran, and about 10 min. from campus. The lease is up in August, and you can renew if you would like. The original rent is $348 plus utilities, but I am willing to negotiate. You can move in as soon as you would like.
The complex is really pretty with nice landscaping and it is really quiet. I lived there for these reasons...no campus cops, no loud parties, no armed robberies. I am willing to leave my bed, desk, and other furniture in the room if you need to borrow if for a couple months. If not, I can gladly put it in storage.
My roommates are in their fourth years of school, and they are both responsible, fun students at UCF. I am graduatng and looking to spend the summer overseas before starting law school, so I am just looking to save someone some money and offer up some cheap rent. =)

I hope you all managed to survive this first part of summer classes. Anyway, I just wanted to forward a message to you all from Jessica over at Senator Nelson's office:
Tomorrow night (Friday, June 30th) at 6:00 pm, the Orange County Democratic Party along with Senator Nelson’s campaign staff are having a party in support of Senator Nelson’s re-election campaign.
Who: Senator Nelson’s campaign staff, supporters, friends, and family What: House party in support of the Senator’s re-election campaign, including a conference call with the Senator When: Friday, June 30th at 6:00pm Where: Orange County DEC Headquarters 633 East Colonial Drive, Suite 200 Orlando, FL 32803 Phone: (407) 896-9292 Email: democrats@cfl.rr.com Why: To return Florida’s only statewide elected Democrat to office!
This should be a great event, so I hope to see many of you guys out there. Like it says up there, Senator Nelson is our only statewide elected Democrat, so he definitely needs our support. I know, the thought of Katherine Harris in office makes me nauseous, too. Anyway, If you're interested in going or you'd just like some more information, you can call Jessica Clark at 407.895.2006, or you can message me back here.
Hope to see all of you soon, -Tiffany

 | 07:48 pm - Senate Seat Open Education majors: Interested in serving as a student senator?
Due to a summer internship in D.C., I will be signing my seat over for the summer session, which begins on Thursday, May 18th at 7:00. I will return in early August, but there is a possibility I will not be returning to Senate due to other opportunities. In essence, there is a possibility that my sign-over could retain my seat if I were to formally resign in early August, and the individual could serve in Senate until fall Senate elections.
Senators who serve over the summer must attend bi-weekly Senate and committee meetings. Senate meetings are held every other Thursday, and my committee meetings are currently held on Tuesday nights but will likely change due to summer schedule changes. I would not be opposed to my sign-over dropping a committee position or switching to one that they feel they may be a more effective member of. As far as mandatory attendance, my attendance record allows for two absences from Senate and committee meetings, and absences for official travel or university events can usually be expunged.
Senate is a great experience, and being a sign-over is a great way to get involved with on-campus politics. Senators control a multi-million dollar budget, represent student organizations, and serve as the voice of students. I have thoroughly enjoyed my time on Senate, and I am looking for a passionate individual to serve in my seat, a person who is genuinely interested in positively impacting the university and its diverse student body. I encourage anyone who is interested to check out my info page and to also look at the SGA website, www.sga.ucf.edu.
If you are not an education major but would like to serve on Senate, please feel free to contact me because I may be able to direct you to another senator in need of a sign-over. Many senators tend to sign-over during the summer session because of academic or personal commitments.
Please contact me by e-mail at CL.Kimball@gmail.com if you are interested. Current Location: SGA Office Current Mood: excited Current Music: Office Sounds

 | 03:01 pm - Funny stuff! Whitman: isn't this the problem with politics, Alec? that it gets so personal?
Alec: that can be one of the problems, yeah. I mean, I think the problem is unqualified people are running the country right now, but this other thing that you're referring to is a problem as well, yeah.

 | 03:25 pm - Students Take the Feds to Court Over 170,000 students have been denied federal financial aid because of a drug conviction because of the Higher Education Act Drug Provison.
Students for a Sensible Drug Policy (SSDP) and the American Civil Liberties Union are looking for students who have lost their aid and want to sue the government to get their tution back.
If you or someone you know has lost financial aid because of a drug conviction, contact Student for a Sensible Drug Policy at (202) 293-4414 or ssdp@ssdp.org.
Ealier this year NORML@UCF sponsored a UCF Senate resolution which called for the repeal of the Higher Education Act Drug Provision. Because of our efforts, along with the efforts of over 126 universities nationwide, Congress was recently forced to scale back the penalty's reach earlier this year. Under the new law, people with past convictions on their records will regain their eligibility, but people who are enrolled in college at the time of their conviction will still lose their financial aid. While this reform is certainly a major achievement (being the first time a bad federal drug law has been scaled back in nearly a decade), SSDP and NORML@UCF will not rest until the provision is done away with altogether.
Please feel free to contact NORML@UCF for general questions about the Drug Provision.
Click here more information about the suit or the HEA Drug Provision, including a PDF file of the formal complaint. Help us give all student equal access to higher education!

Two Years Before 9/11, Candidate Bush was Already Talking Privately About Attacking Iraq, According to His Former Ghost Writer by Russ Baker HOUSTON -- Two years before the September 11 attacks, presidential candidate George W. Bush was already talking privately about the political benefits of attacking Iraq, according to his former ghost writer, who held many conversations with then-Texas Governor Bush in preparation for a planned autobiography.
"He was thinking about invading Iraq in 1999," said author and journalist Mickey Herskowitz. "It was on his mind. He said to me: 'One of the keys to being seen as a great leader is to be seen as a commander-in-chief.' And he said, 'My father had all this political capital built up when he drove the Iraqis out of Kuwait and he wasted it.' He said, 'If I have a chance to invade·.if I had that much capital, I'm not going to waste it. I'm going to get everything passed that I want to get passed and I'm going to have a successful presidency."( Read more... )

 | 09:36 pm "In the history of the world, the true test of a civilization is how well people treat the most vulnerable and most helpless in their society. The sponsors and supporters of this bill believe that abortion is wrong because unborn children are the most vulnerable and most helpless persons in our society. I agree with them," Rounds said in the statement.
This is what a Republican from South Dakota had to say about the new ban. What I find funny is that they only deserve our help while they are in the womb---but after they are born, its there fault that they are poor and they don't deserve anything because they won't help themselves. What hypocrisy......especially since Bush cut welfare programs....
Was anyone else pissed that they had "pro-life" protestors on campus a few days ago?

 | 08:36 pm - *shakes head Watchdog Group Questions 2004 Fla. Vote By BRIAN SKOLOFF, Associated Press Writer Thu Feb 23, 3:53 PM ET
WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. - An examination of Palm Beach County's electronic voting machine records from the 2004 election found possible tampering and tens of thousands of malfunctions and errors, a watchdog group said Thursday.
ADVERTISEMENT Bev Harris, founder of BlackBoxVoting.org, said the findings call into question the outcome of the presidential race. But county officials and the maker of the electronic voting machines strongly disputed that and took issue with the findings.
Voting problems would have had to have been widespread across the state to make a difference. President Bush won Florida — and its 27 electoral votes — by 381,000 votes in 2004. Overall, he defeated John Kerry by 286 to 252 electoral votes, with 270 needed for victory.
BlackBoxVoting.org, which describes itself as a nonpartisan, nonprofit citizens group, said it found 70,000 instances in Palm Beach County of cards getting stuck in the paperless ATM-like machines and that the computers logged about 100,000 errors, including memory failures.
Also, the hard drives crashed on some of the machines made by Oakland, Calif.-based Sequoia Voting Systems, some machines apparently had to be rebooted over and over, and 1,475 re-calibrations were performed on Election Day on more than 4,300 units, Harris said. Re-calibrations are done when a machine is malfunctioning, she said.
"I actually think there's enough votes in play in Florida that it's anybody's guess who actually won the presidential race," Harris added. "But with that said, there's no way to tell who the votes should have gone to."
Palm Beach County and other parts of the country switched to electronic equipment after the turbulent 2000 presidential election, when the county's butterfly ballot confused some voters and led them to cast their votes for third-party candidate Pat Buchanan instead of Al Gore. The Supreme Court halted a recount after 36 days and handed a 537-vote victory to Bush.
Palm Beach County election officials said the BlackBoxVoting.com findings are flawed, and they blamed most of the errors on voters not following proper procedures.
"Their results are noteworthy for consideration, but in a majority of instances they can be explained," said Arthur Anderson, the county's elections supervisor. "All of these circumstances are valid reasons for concern, but they do not on face value substantiate that the machines are not reliable."
Sequoia spokeswoman Michelle Shafer disputed the findings, saying the company's machines worked properly. Sequoia's machines are used in five Florida counties and in 21 states.
"There was a fine election in November 2004," Shafer said.
She said many of the errors in the computer logs could have resulted from voters improperly inserting their user cards into the machines. The remaining errors would not affect the vote results because each unit has a backup system, she said.
Jenny Nash, a spokeswoman for the Florida Department of State, which oversees elections, said she was not aware of the report and had no comment.
Harris said one machine showed that 112 votes were cast on Oct. 16, two days before the start of early voting, a possible sign of tampering. She said the group found evidence of tampering on more than 30 machines in the county.
However, Harris said it was impossible to determine what information was altered or if votes were shifted among candidates.

| 11:30 pm - hi all, this is a follow up to the last post Hello Everyone, Sorry to burden you with all of this drama, but this email is an important follow-up from the previous email that was sent to the group. This email is to take back the comments that were stated about two individuals running for President and Vice President of SGA, Mark White and Jared Stout. The comments saying that they were "Anti-Gay" were misconstrued from the recording of the Activity & Service Fee Budget Committee meeting, and GLBSU has no reason to believe that they feel this way from what is recorded on the following link: http://www.r3lic.com/sean/audio/Recording4.wav Again this email to is publicly take back the comments that were made saying that Mark White and Jared Stout are "Anti-Gay". ***Please forward this to anyone who you forwarded this to the first time, and please take time out to spread the word to whoever you told the first time. Thank you, and again I apologize for any inconvenience caused to Mark White and Jared Stout. Peter Gaspar GLBSU President

ANTI- GAY runningmates MARK WHITE AND JARED STOUT are running for President and VP, and in last weeks meeting to discuss funding for student organizations for next year they were adiment about Diva Invasion and GLBSU getting NO funding, calling what we do "disgusting" and "If what was done at Diva Invasion was done on the streets we would be arrested for indecent exposure".
The link below is an audio file of presidental hopeful Mark White, making fun of our organization and Diva Invasion. Please listen- and DO NOT VOTE FOR MARK WHITE AND JARED STOUT in the election this week.

 | 11:50 am - Preaching to the choir. Dont piss off Sen. Russ Feingold.
THIS BEGETS THIS.
The Republican led Senate Judiciary Committee once again standing in the way of justice. Why would a Bush Administration yes-man lie to a committee preparing to ask questions about the illegal NSA wiretapping program? Besides oath's are for people who are accused of marriage infidelity, not people accused of shattering the 4th Amendment to the Constitution!
Can we just get on with the inevitable?! Impeachment, it's what's for dinner!

| 12:52 pm - upcoming events. Hey guys. . .
Just wanted to let you all know what's going on in College Dems right now. The website is kind of MIA at the moment and I thought I'd just post this here in case someone doesn't get the emails. Anyway, we've got some events coming up that should be good times! Be there! :)
1) Tomorrow (Wednesday Nov. 16) at 11am there's going to be a protest against the Iraq war on the grass near the Math and Physics building. It's headed up by Campus Peace Action and it should make quite a statement. Come out if you can.
2) Also Wednesday evening from 7-9 there's going to be the Hunger Banquet in the UCF Student Union (Pegasus Ballroom). You only have to bring 2 cans of food to get in--and it's for a good cause. Our fearless leader Adam should have some extra cans for anyone who doesn't have anything to bring but still wants to come and hang out.
3) On Thursday @ 9pm at the Memory Mall green between CL1 and HPA we've got a free Middle Eastern concert with David Broza.
4) and finally, on Friday we've got the Walmart Movie playing at 7pm in Student Union Key West room B. We should have some media out there so maybe you'll get to be on tv. Hope to see you all there!
Feel free to hit me with any questions at tiffy630@aol.com or on the cell 321.543.3939
Talk to you all later, Tiffany Political Affairs VP
