wanna go swimming! [Jul. 15th, 2009|10:34 pm]

blue_harinezumi
i've heard that the rec pool and hickey pool are free for students, but does that mean you have to be taking summer sessions to have free access? im not taking SSI or II but am im davis all summer and am baking and wanna swim a few laps...so is it free then, or do i have to pay to get in even though i'm still a student?

btw just out of curiosity does anybody go swimming in the rec pool often? how crazy-crowded does it get on an average summer weekday?

Free furniture and such [Jul. 15th, 2009|10:04 pm]

avagoyle
Since when did craiglist make you give them an email address and phone number in order to give things away for free?

I'm moving to a new apartment and I don't feel like hauling all my stuff over. If you are interested in any couches, bookshelves, tv stands, dressers or the tv, send me a text. I also have every past issue of Scientific American and Discover for the past 3 years or so and yaoi manga. On top of that, free clothing for girls size 14-16 and women's size 1-3.

You have to move the stuff yourself. I don't have a car. And I'm in the process of moving after being at school from 8 am to 8 pm ><

My number is 949.413.2144.

My macbook power supply is crapping out, I need a new one. Anyone know of some way to get around paying frickin $80 for a new one? Personally I think it's a problem of poor design (fraying wires, etc.) but I doubt Apple would just replace it for free. I did purchase the applecare warranty when I bought the computer but I think it may have run out by now, I don't know if power supplies are even covered under that warranty, and I wouldn't really know how to use it anyway. Any advice you have would be awesome. Thanks.

Intercampus Program Help [Jul. 7th, 2009|11:29 pm]

lqqk
Hello UCD students!  I hope you all are having a great summer! I have some questions I hope some of you can answer. I am thinking about doing an intercampus visitor program for spring 2010. My question are what are the chances of getting into the program? Do they only allow you to enroll the program if if the classes you will be taking is in your major? What if you want to take other classes not related in your major but maybe for graduate or medical school? Can you still participate in the program if you graduate or do you have to finish the program prior to graduation? If you have done the program, how was your experience? Did you like it?

I know that's a lot of questions, I really want to know more about the program before applying and to avoid any risky fees if I cannot get in the program. Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Any singer/songwriters interested in starting a little acoustic band? [Jul. 6th, 2009|12:31 am]

_suicidemessiah
I'm going back to Davis on the 8th, about 3 weeks earlier than planned. This means I'll have a lot of time to kill, and an acoustic band is something I've always been interested in, but could never find a singer for. I have been playing guitar for about 6 years now, fairly open minded when it comes to music, and just love jamming.

I will be a 3rd year (20 yrs old) NPB major. I am usually busy with school, work (Unitrans driver woo), and personal stuff, but I can always find time and will be willing to squeeze this in. I have some theory knowledge from AP Music Theory in HS, so I can kind of figure out chord work and scale stuff.

I listen to a range of music depending on my mood. Jack Johnson, Mountain Goats, Shins, Blink 182, Jimmy Eat World, Breaking Benjamin, Dream Theater, Metallica, Judas Priest, and a bunch of others. I am against screamo/hardcore music and don't really do country, but I am very flexible.

If you can sing and write songs (I can't write songs for my life, and I can hit notes when I sing but I 'm not much of a singer, maybe backup?) and would like to start something, let me know! I am fine with a guy or girl singer, as long as you can get into it and have energy, and have fun! (That's the most important part of this...I want to have fun and so should you!) You can friend me on facebook (Shun Izai) and just write that you're from here and I'll add you.

Let me know if you're interested, or if you have any questions feel free to ask, either here or on facebook!

Question for those who don't live on campus or in Davis [Jul. 2nd, 2009|09:07 am]
zinema
[Current Mood | curious]

Do any of you live in Sacramento or Woodland and have to commute to school by bus, car, or train? I live in Sacramento, and there is no way I can afford an apartment in Davis. (The rent rates out there are OUTRAGEOUS!) So I will be commuting to Davis from Sacramento via the Yolo county bus, but I understand that you can't always bring your bike on board (since the bus can only hold 3 bikes, and it's first come, first served). Anyway, I have a few questions:

- Is it safe to lock your bike up on campus overnight?

- Has anyone ever had their bike stolen or impounded?

- What type of bike lock do you recommend? (I have the U-lock, but it's so heavy to carry around).

- Thinking of getting a new bike, any recommendations on what kind of bike would be best for riding on campus?

- I heard you have to register your bike with the school. Is that true?

Thanks again to anyone who responds!

Adjusting to quarter system [Jun. 28th, 2009|03:05 am]
zinema
Hi, I'm transferring from a community college (which had a semester system) and I know UCD has the quarter system. So far, I've read that a lot of students had a hard time adjusting to the quarter system.

Can you tell me what your first quarter was like, and how you adjusted to it?

Do many students fail in their first quarter?

If you manage to breeze through the first quarter, do you develop a rhythm and breeze through the rest of the quarters?

I'm probably the world's biggest procrastinator. Am I doomed to fail?

Thanks in advance for any input.

Hey everyone on UCDLJ! I was wondering if anyone had suggestions for a good curry place in Davis or Sacramento b/c I am hoping to take my friend out to a place sometime next week. I would really appreciate any suggestions. Thank you and hope your summer is going well whether you are doing summer school, job, internship, studying abroad, or just lazying around at home. ^^

Impartiality by karaoke DJs: does it exist?

So tonight some fellow UCDLJers and I decided to dine at Woodstocks, only to be surprised that it was karaoke night. After eating, I decide to do a song and then split. However, the karaoke DJ, who was pretty much just the chick who stuck the damn CD in the player was pretty partial to what she played--allowing those who tipped her and her friends who sat at her table an earlier place in the roster despite it actually being a "first-come, first served" type of deal. After way too fucking long (around 9 people), I finally get to sing, though I'm sure that there was only two other people ahead of me when I signed up.

Thoughts?

Transfer students are called transfers. UCD likes to shorten everything because we can't be bothered to say or write out everything in full.

So we can call transfers Trannies right?

Or can we abbreviate them into TS

Transfer Orientation??! [Jun. 17th, 2009|11:07 am]

hdehal
So I'm supposed to go to the transfer orientation next week. The schedule looks daunting.

I've already consulted: http://orientation.ucdavis.edu/transfers/itemstobringtransfers.html
  1. Any secrets so I can go in, kick ass, and get out?
  2. Anything else I should know like useful advice/secrets/past experiences?
  3. Do I need to pick my classes? I don't know what I want!

Thanks in advance!

Hello everyone [Jun. 13th, 2009|04:49 pm]
zinema
I'll be attending Davis this fall, and just got an email from "Davis Honors Challenge 2009-2010." Anyway, the email says that the "Davis Honors Challenge (DHC) is a campus-wide honors program for highly-motivated students. DHC enhances the experience of undergraduate students through special courses, closer contact with faculty, and dynamic interaction with similarly motivated peers."

What I'm wondering is, is there anyone here who is in the Honors program? Is it a lot more work (on top of your regular classes)? The reason I ask is because I'm a single mom, so I won't have much time for extracurricular activities.

However, I don't want to miss any opportunities, because I've done that in the past, and will always regret that.
