So, since the mods decided (understandably) to cancel anoncon this year, we're stuck without it over here. However, some of us miss it. For this reason, I created an unofficial anoncon post over at calblather. Here it is: Anoncon!

Mods, please lemme know if this isn't cool and I'll delete it.

EDIT: Due to the unmodded issues with the calblather post, there is now a new community, [info]ucb_anoncon. The calblather post will be friendslocked to prevent further anonymous posting there, but membership is open, so you can join if you want to read it!

This is the AnonCon post

Add to Memories Tell a Friend
The pettiness, meanness, and bitterness we've seen in the last few incarnations has just been escalating and it's turning (turned) into a festering slime pool of suck that's doing more to disenfranchise students than to make them feel a part of a wider community. This may be due to a vocal minority, but they're the ones dominating the experience.

By consensus, we (the moderators) have decided that we won't be doing it this semester. I'm sure this decision will be controversial - lauded by some, condemned by others - but it's ultimately what we believe is best for this humble little livejournal community. Right or wrong, popular or unpopular, there won't be an 'official' AnonCon this term.

Feel free to browse the previous AnonCon entries, feel free to reach down and grab your pair and talk to that cutie you've had goo-goo eyes for, feel free to do those things you wished you had done, and feel free to prepare for finals. Get off the computer and go live.

RIP ANONCON

Add to Memories Tell a Friend
2046
Anoncon used to be about confessions, sincere confessions. Now its just meanspirited attacks on fellow LJers and racist remarks about Blacks and Asians. And of course there are the million posts about Ragnus.

Let's call the new thread Anonyawn since there are only three confessions for every thirty random pointless posts. There is too much stuff to wade through. Now I see why the mods wanted to do something to regulate it. There is nothing worthwhile there anymore. Anyone here from the 2005 year? Remember how awesome those confessions were? Sure you might think "I miss my ex-boyfriend" and "I'm crying cause I'm going to fail Physics" wasn't as exciting as "RAGNUS RAGNUS RAGNUS I HATE NI66ARS AND LASTQUESTION IS A QUEERZ," but I actually thought it expressed a common experience all of us 22,000 undergrads at Berkeley were going through, which made me feel closer to UC Berkeley than anything else the campus has offered. Now Anoncon just makes me feel like I go to school with a bunch of high school assholes.

What once seemed like a great tradition that brought many UC Berk students together has now turned into a meanspirited flame war with fake confessions, trolling, attacks on ethnic groups and LJers, and pointless posts about Ragnus. Thanks to the few people who have turned an awesome Berkeley version of Group Hug into something that demonstrates how ugly people can get once anonymity is conferred.

Seriously, stop calling it Anoncon cause there aren't any confessions on there anymore.

Edit: I see the mods have put up the official Anoncon. My rant above was about lastquestion's anoncon community. Hopefully the official Anoncon will be different.

An Anoncon Song

Add to Memories Tell a Friend
So the main anoncon thread is pretty dead... I couldn't get this idea out of my head so I wrote it down as a commemoration of this year's anoncon (with links where appropriate and easily findable).

To the tune of The Major-General's Song, by Gilbert and Sullivan

And so we see the end of yet another year's Anon-O-Con
(a corruption of [info]risingdragon's phrase which is quite frowned upon)
Where we find a way through finals in which we procrastinate
And cookie girl teaches all of us how we can Rasterbate

And cookie girl teaches all of us how we can Rasterbate
And cookie girl teaches all of us how we can Rasterbate
And cookie girl teaches all of us how we can Raster-rasterbate!

You can have a crush on GSIs or on [info]vivalarevalex
Or post on all the naughty things you wish you could do to your ex
It's at this time that trolls can post with rules that are the freest
As long as you are not one of those dirty dirty atheists

As long as you are not one of those dirty dirty atheists
As long as you are not one of those dirty dirty atheists
As long as you are not one of those dirty dirty dirty atheists

You can look for love or just a fuck or maybe friends with benefits
Or expound on how much you like your (or others') set of tits.
Drunk driving's bad (mmkay?) and those with bad roommates get sympathy
Just hope the mods crack down on [info]ragnus and the troll community!

Just hope the mods crack down on [info]ragnus and the troll community!
Just hope the mods crack down on [info]ragnus and the troll community!
Just hope the mods crack down on [info]ragnus and the troll communi-munity!

Anonconcon is where we meet and talk about our normal lives
With laptops on hand to post back to LJ and search the archives
As people leave remaining geeks seek warmth and food quite happily
And [info]krypticnight lets everyone play Katamari Damacy!

And [info]krypticnight lets everyone play Katamari Damacy!
And [info]krypticnight lets everyone play Katamari Damacy!
And [info]krypticnight lets everyone play Katamari Dama-damashiii!

Anoncon Progress

Add to Memories Tell a Friend
Hacking around...
So I'm procrastinating a bunch... You can watch the anoncon thread grow on a pretty graph. Should update roughly every 10 minutes.
This is really a hack, but should be pretty stable for now.

Brought to you by perl, awk, sed, bash, wget, gnuplot, cron, ImageMagick, yours truly, the letter B, the number 6 and the CSUA.

Now with a 10-minute updated derivative chart! (With a rolling average over an hour)

And the 0 - minute is about 2:20 AM on 12/12.  For reference, 600 is then about 12:20 PM on Tuesday and 1200 is about 10:20 PM on Tuesday.

**UPDATE: 12/18 -- I've shut it down. This is the final graph -- there's been no appreciable activity to watch.

ANON-O-CON 2K6, the Sequel

(VOLUME TWO)!

Let the tumultuous mess of human catharsis begin continue!!

"Post anything you want here. Be it a confession, story, phobias, secrets, whatever. But post anonymously and honestly. Be respectful." Play nicely with others.

If you're not going to be respectful, have the 'nads not to be anonymous (though, nonymity, provides no intrinsic defense from moderator smiting deletion)

  • Take a chance and share something about yourself (as in, don't air someone else's dirty laundry).
  • Do you do something so weird, so strange, so deviant that nobody else could possibly relate (are you sure? you might be surprised!)
  • Maybe share an update to your confession from a previous semester (so did you hook up with the cutie/hawtie you were crushing on???).
  • Got something you've always wanted to say, but have been too embarrassed to say in public?

  • Don't berate, insult, attack, or disparage other people (especially by name). It's mean and often ill deserved. It also sours the entire thread and experience for everyone else, and mods smite those types of posts.
  • Rules sometimes sux. So do assholes. Smite buttons gravitate towards assholes. We don't know understand how that works, but simply recognize that it happens.

þe Olde Semi Annual Anonymous Confessions Thread

ANON-O-CON 2K6, the Sequel!

Hear ye, hear ye,

Let the tumultuous mess of human catharsis begin!

"Post anything you want here. Be it a confession, story, phobias, secrets, whatever. But post anonymously and honestly. And be respectful." [sic]

This time around, though, perhaps focus a bit more on the positive... or, at least, saucy confessions. Did you make a confession in the past? Tell us what you posted and give us an update on how things have worked out. Did you hook up with your dorm mate, after all? Or end up really jumping off of Evans? And did those naked pictures of your mom you put on the internet help support your drug habit throughout the term, like you thought they would? Share something new! Be nice! Give love!

Happy holidays

Also, just to keep things all happy and nice and pertinent, the moderators request the following:

  • Try to keep the confessions, well, personal. Something about you and your life. Not just "CaL RuLeS StanFURD dR00ls!" or "I hate ________".
  • Don't berate, insult, attack, or disparage other people (especially by name). It's mean and often ill deserved. It also sours the entire thread and experience for everyone else.
  • In general, try not to be offensive. We hate deleting posts, but we hate even more when people are dicks. It makes baby jesus cry. Don't make baby jesus cry.

Thanks [info]mypaganpoetry, oh benevolent father and provider of all that is ucberkeleyish, for the suggested additions.

ZOMG, the official Facebook group! If it's not on Facebook, it didn't really happen!

Spring 2k6 AnonCon

Fall 2k5 AnonCon

Spring 2k5 AnonCon

this is a blatant attempt at psychological priming

P.S. Some posters are of the opinion that the Freshmen here won't possibly be able to figure out what this post is about. Personally, I give you lovable bunch of little sea urchins a lot more credit than that. But if you've got a picture of Corky from Life Goes On stapled to your wall - the hero you aspire to someday be, let me spell it out: THIS IS A THREAD WHERE YOU CAN POST ... GET THIS ... ANONYMOUS CONFESSIONS. Ya. I know, the title above was pretty hard to figure out, but there ya go. What's an anonymous confession, you might ask? Well. It's a sort of confession - our friends at Merriam Webster would say 'a written or oral acknowledgment of guilt by a party of an offense', but we can be more casual about it and just say that it's something that you've been dwelling on and you want to get off of your chest. And, here's the clincher, it's anonymous. As in, we won't have any idea who you are. (Unless you're like me and have a recognizable writing style where everyone seems to get some sort of visceral glee out of pointing out my posts to me.) Two words. Deep meaning. Anonymous Confession. On your marks, get set... GO!
