Daily Cal
What is the general consensus on the paper?  I've somewhat read it for the last 2 years and have come to the conclusion that is it complete biased garbage.  How is it possible for Berkeley's premier paper to be so bad?

It's only good for the crossword - they get me through my early classes with a minimum of boredom.

Yup. I thought that's all the newspaper was good for?
Oh. And sudoku i guess.

But the crosswords are terrible! (I still do them, but wince at the repetitiveness of the clues, the misspellings of answers, and the omission of clues)

My favorite for the year was "Chinese Province: Taiwan"

Omission of clues is just one of those things that increases the difficulty. The answers you can come up without them are better, anyway.

Once when they left out a whole slew of clues, we took the next day's paper with solutions and had someone make up clues.

Most school's papers are sponsored by the journalism department. We don't have an undergraduate journalism department. So they're left to their own crappy devices.

It's also independent, so even if there was such a department, it couldn't sponsor it.

my guess: we have a really amazing english department and all the good writers spend their time, well, doing homework and writing theses for the amazing english department.

Just out of curiosity, what do you find "biased" about it?

i wonder if this bashing will make the clog, or will the daily cal just pretend to ignore the facts once again

Maybe if you write them. And write them something with a topic. Like "your reporting on ---- was poor because it lacked insight into ----."

I hate Sonja Sharp's columns. They are so incoherent and juvenile.

The addition of sudoku was welcome, and I enjoy the crossword (except for some of its overly vague clues eg. "five letter word for a greek letter," etc.). The spelling errors and blatant omission of some clues is bothersome, though.

They need to work on space management, though. It's irritating not having a single article that fits on only one page. Maybe they want more headlines on the cover in order to attract attention to more stories, but it makes reading stories a chore.

i think the problem is more that there is not a strong bias in the news section, than there being a bias. the news is often undeveloped, misreported, or under-covered.

i admit to having only read a few issues. for the issues i read though, they seemed fine. plus all the people ive ever met from the daily cal have been nothing but insanely awesome people. its hard for me to believe something non-awesome could come from such awesome people.

seriously though, i worked in indie print publishing for almost five years before coming to college. if any of you guys think you could rustle up an organization that puts out a newspaper daily, let alone do a better job than the daily cal, i'd be really impressed. sure its not the new york times, but give it some slack. its a daily publication that is independently operated. its insane to run a daily newspaper operation. for what it is, i think they do fine.

I second this plus would like to point out that the daily cal is a student run newspaper, that means that the people that work there are going to school just like the rest of us, they have classes, papers and finals, and at the same time work almost full time hours at the newspaper.

The daily cal also wins numerous awards for its content. So yeah, if your comparing it to professional dailys it falls short, but for a student newspaper is pretty damn good.

and daily cal people are awesome.

Anyone else have trouble believing that the girl who writes the "Sex on Tuesdays" column has ever had sex?

Sports section is decent though.

i agree with this.... her sex jokes are so contrived, she can't know what she is talking about. For example: did anyone believe she has a bend over boyfriend??? aka a boyfriend who likes to get it in the butt with her using a strap-on???

Daily Cal could be better if they stuck to their guns. Every now and then someone has the guts to write about a thorny issue, and the next day when an angry crowd shows up with torches and pitchforks, Daily Cal goes on a tour of public ass kissing and apologies.

Ugh. Nothing worse than a paper run by flip-flops.

Honestly, for a daily student publication, its not bad at all
Things that I hate:
1) None of the articles ever fit on 1 page
2) Sex on Tuesday is terrible, it feels like the way its written is like, "OMG WE ARE OPENLY TALKING ABOUT SEX, WE ARE HARDCOREEEEE.....but we don't have anything to say :(
lets wiki every possible term for vagina and use them all!!1"

the best column _title_ was a few years back when the wednesday guy pulled this:

(don't remember what the actual column was about -- and didn't bother re-reading it now either -- but that title was awesome)

yeah.. the columns this year weren't particularly interesting.. i wish they would run a full opinion page everyday instead of just the random columns..

but as far as overall quality goes, the daily cal isn't terrible, but it's not good either.
