I guess he figures that since our futures as English grads will be filled with people scorning us and spitting upon our very existences anyways, he'd get us prepared for that and start a bit early, while we're still young and hopeful.

i cannot begin to imagine why he still has a job if the department knows he sucks too. well i guess because students (me included) don't complain to the right places? hmmm why don't we all go and complain to the dean of the english department (in contrast, a really nice dude)??

SERIOUSLY. We should complain. But you never know - he could pretend to be a real sweet guy in front of the "right" people. I can't quite understand it myself - the english department is on the whole made up of really wonderful folks. And then you have Mr. Mahru. Can't believe he has a band. Maybe he should quit his day job for our sake. But as far as educational institutions go, in person he is by far the coldest jerk I have ever come across.

feverdream - ken mahru is the english department advisor and at some point in your years at cal, you will probably have to deal with him in some capacity if you choose to be an english major, and if he is not fired soon. when you do, get in and get out and don't say a word!

There is no rhyme or reason why he should be the first face that cal students should have to deal with when deciding their major.

The first time I went to see him, he was super rude and impatient with me--until someone slammed the door to the office, and then his anger was redirected and we became united against a common enemy. The next time I went to see him, I just made sure I was extremely prepared for all contingencies, which precluded any eye-rolling and heavy sighs and got me out of there a lot quicker.

and the DMV. Thats why he sucks, its in his nature. His music sucks, that would make anyone sad. For a real gem listen to his song condescending prick. Or don't.

I can't stand him. He's rude in person and emails and his concept of advising is "Refer to the General Catalog."
The English dept would do well to save itself some money by firing him and replacing him with a copy of the GC.

Even other advisors have a problem with him and complain about what an ass he is.
