Question about OS Boot Menu and Linux
I dual boot between xp and ubuntu, so when I start up the computer, I select which OS I want and press enter. Easy enough. Problem is, every time I update ubuntu, it adds the new build to the OS boot menu without deleting the old ones, so now I have a long list of ubuntu builds on the thing, and have to scroll all the way down it to boot into xp. It's annoying. And, I must be an idiot or something, because I have no idea how to delete the old builds from the boot menu. Help? | | Monday, January 12th, 2009 | 11:56 pm [mkaneko] |
Problems turning on wireless card
I just downloaded ubuntu on HP zv5255us and am trying to figure it out. I can't log on to any wireless networks because the card won't turn on. It seems like it turns on as window is loading and turns off when I shut down. Any Ideas or comments would be very appreciated. I will post the specs later | | Thursday, December 18th, 2008 | 8:49 am [ftmichael]

Installation Woes
WinXP did its regularly scheduled crap-out and i decided to use Ubuntu. I d/l Ubuntu 8.04 LTS 64bit version (since i have an AMD Athlon XP 64) and started installation. Ran find off the Live-CD, but after installation onto the hard drive and booting up, it'd freeze. I installed in the recovery mode, and I was able to see where it'd freeze. It happened on the hardware abstraction layer initializing. Nothing online or anywhere directed me where to go, but something about 64-bit being finicky. So, format and d/l and install 32-bit Ubuntu, and installation went fine, got passed the HALD layer issue, froze a bit on the Gnome Display issue, and when i tried to reboot again, went all the way through, but amber on the monitor, nothing responding. I installed XP again, and its running fine. I'll probably do a dual-boot, but want to know what to try to get Ubuntu working right. | 8:24 pm [mrguillo]

Wireless Interwebz
Hello everyone, I installed Ubuntu on my machine a few days ago. I got mine from http://www.ubuntu.com/getubuntu/download ( Ubuntu 8.04 LTS Desktop Edition - Supported to 2011 ) Installation went perfect. The only problem I am having, is no internet connectivity. I have a Wireless Card. So I can only use Wireless connectivity. I searched online and I found this link Click here to see the webspageMy Wireless Card's Model # is WMP54G v. 1.1 - Linksys Card with SpeedBooster. I believe its the first option on that website above. Ver 1.0/2.0/3.0) Broadcom BCM4306 bcm43xx/b43 "Works with bcm43xx (may be flaky), but not b43 (Bug #182716). Also works with ndiswrapper. (all this for Ver 03)" I can't find anything that would help me out. I did a Hardware Test with Ubuntu and the system finds the Wireless Card. It's not connecting to anything. I'm not able to search for Wireless networks. Any help would be much appreciated. Thanks Guillo | 8:06 am [ftmichael]

iTunes for Linux but with Parental control
So, I have bought an Mp4 player for my son. He's 9. He wanted and MP3 player, but I wanted to get him something that was so much more, and might expand his horizons, his computer has Edubuntu 7.10 as the OS. Here's a link to the MP4 player I bought: Portable 6 in 1 Multimedia ConsoleNow, I'm familiar with the specs of this thing. It can play mp3, wmv, and does video mp4 and 3GP. apt question
How do you install a package with alternate dependencies? For instance, I want to install MediaWiki but don't want to use the default MySQL database as I already have PostgreSQL installed and running. If you # aptitude show mediwiki1.10 Package: mediawiki1.10 State: not installed Version: 1.10.2-1 Priority: optional Section: universe/web Maintainer: Ubuntu MOTU Developers <ubuntu-motu@lists.ubuntu.com> Uncompressed Size: 17.3M Depends: apache2 | httpd, php5, php5-mysql | php5-pgsql, php5-cli, mime-support, debconf (>= 0.5) | debconf-2.0 Recommends: mysql-server | postgresql-8.1
How do I get it installed with postgresql support instead of mysql? x-posted to ubuntu_users and ubuntulinux | | Wednesday, March 19th, 2008 | 9:52 pm [paintitmatt]

32 bit vs. 64 bit? I'm getting a new computer in a few days... It's a Dell XPS 420 Mini-Tower: Intel Core 2 Q6600 Quad-Core (8MB L2 cache,2.4GHz,1066FSB), 3 GB DDR2 SDRAM 667MHz I mostly use my computer for email, web surfing, minor photo editing, and listening to music, though I plan to start watching movies, and maybe even ripping a few DVDs. I regularly rip CDs that I own. I'm also learning Perl and plan to do a little bit of programming. I'm not a hardcore gamer, I don't do 3D modeling, etc... I've done a little reading about 64 bit and it's lack of some key plug-ins for the web (Flash and Java). It seems there are ways to get them working, though some have varying results, especially with sound. I really like my computer to "just work" without a lot of hassle, one of the reasons I like Ubuntu so much. What I'm wondering is, are there any advantages to installing 64 bit Ubuntu? Will there be any performance hit by going with 32 bit vs. 64 bit? Is there anything else I should know? | | Saturday, March 15th, 2008 | 6:21 pm [ftmichael]

New mobo = no sound in Gutsy

nVidia Geforce (7 series) on Gutsy - constant low graphics mode
From searching the Ubuntu forums, it seems that a lot of other people are having this same problem. I bought my new motherboard (with onboard graphics) because several people told me that nVidia is excellent with Ubuntu, but this whole experience has seriously soured me on nVidia. My motherboard is an nforce 630i from XFX, and the onboard graphics card is an nVidia geforce 7100. I have nvidia-glx-new installed, after nvidia-glx didn't work - switching to nvidia-glx-new hasn't changed a thing, but it's what's still installed. As seems to be the case with so many folks, X keeps starting in low graphics mode. It informs me that it couldn't properly detect my graphics card or screen, and gives me the option of manually configuring them. I do so, telling it to use the nvidia driver and that my monitor is 1024x768, and I click OK; it immediately decides to ignore what I've just told it and boots into 800x600, which it had started to do anyway. Going to System->Preferences->Screen Resolution shows me that it won't allow me to choose any resolution above 800x600; going to System->Administration->Screens and Graphics shows me that it's back using the vesa driver (which is the default in low graphics mode) and thinks I'm using a Plug n' Play monitor that only supports 800x600 resolution. I have run dpkg-configure xserver-xorg more times than I can count and am sure everything is as it should be; no joy. My xorg.conf, Xorg.0.log, and results from lsmod (remember I was in low graphics mode when I ran these - I don't know if that makes a difference) are available at http://ubuntuforums.org/showpost.php?p=4521613&postcount=10 . I tried running dmesg and it scrolled so far that I couldn't see the beginning anymore. Should I post just as much as is left in my terminal? Also, my sound isn't working either. Is that a function of low graphics mode for some reason, or am I going to have to troubleshoot that separately? At the moment I'm more concerned with sorting out the graphics, but the missing sound is an annoyance as well. Going to System->Preferences->Sound, selecting the Devices tab, and clicking any of the Test buttons gets me this error message: audiotestsrc wave=sine freq=512 ! audioconvert ! audioresample ! gconfaudiosink: Could not open source for writing. ETA: I tried Envy, and it told me that my video card is not compatible with any version of the driver. wtf? ETA2: I found the appropriate driver version on nVidia's website and used Envy to manually install it. I've rebooted and all seems well now! Now to deal with the sound issue. Any help on that? Thanks in advance for any help! | | Thursday, February 14th, 2008 | 12:13 am [vocalstud69]

Linux on a HP Pavilion zv5255us
I have recently decided that I am sick of fucking around with Windows at all. So, I installed Ubuntu. Surprisingly, it actually worked better than Windows XP and many times better than Vista. My only problem is that I could not get my headphone jack to work. My speakers worked under the ALSA drivers that Ubuntu 7.10 installs, but the headphone jack gives me nothing, and I use that every day while I'm at work. No one at my job would enjoy listening to Baroque era opera. I think they would rather have a root canal. I have a HP Pavilion zv5000, with the actual serial number being zv5255us. That all being said, I am a newbie on Linux and Ubuntu. When I say 'newbie', I mean I've used it for two days. Before that, barely heard of it. Everything works on my laptop except for my headphone jack. Below is the specs of my laptop from hp.com. Any help would be appreciated. And if anything is posted, please try to keep my ignorance in mind? Please? I know nothing of Linux, except for the fact that it's free and I somehow got everything working except the headphone jack. That doesn't really bother me at all, except that the headphone jack doesn't work. Please help me and forgive my ignorance. | | Monday, January 14th, 2008 | 4:40 am [adminbear]

Dell Wireless
Ok... I've got a Dell XPS M1210. It dual boots Windows Vista (as installed by Dell) and Ubuntu 7.10, kernel 2.6.22-14. Under Windows, both the wired and wireless connections work fine. Under Linux I've had NO problem with the wired connection, but I have yet to ever get the wireless connection to work. I would REALLY appreciate any suggestions or help. Tweaking TCP/IP settings It took me much of yesterday to determine that Gutsy seems set by default to be optimized for broadband users. That's a bit sucky for someone who is doomed to dial up use such as myself. So I spent a goodly portion of the evening trying to figure out how to set various tidbits such as MTU and RWIN to suitable levels for dial up use. Thankfully, RWIN seems to change automatically (dynamically) as needed. MTU was easy as pie to set. Yet I'm still only getting about half the bandwidth my ISP so lovingly provides. This same thing occurred when I was using Windows. Fortunately, I ran into one tcpoptimizer.exe and that fixed that problem. Sadly, however, there is no similar program for Linux as tcpoptimizer.exe - at least not that I could find. If you happen to know of such a program, please let me know. In the meanwhile, does anyone have any ideas as to how to optimize the TCP/IP stack for dial up use? I'm willing to get down and ugly with the bits if necessary but all the documentation I've seen is tailored to broadband use - that isn't an option where I live though. My thanks in advance for any tips, pointers and whatnot you can provide. Current Mood: tired | | Tuesday, December 4th, 2007 | 12:32 pm [ftmichael]

Overheard at work
In the fencing waiting room last night, a teenager came out of his lesson and chatted to his mother while waiting for her to finish what she was doing on her laptop. Son: We should buy Microsoft Office for [someone]. He doesn't have it. Mother [slightly disbelieving]: He doesn't have Microsoft Office? Son: No. We should get it for him. Mother: Well you're the big programming genius ... Son: Yeah, I know ... I'm not entirely sure with how that's relevant unless she expects him to pirate Office for this person or write all new Office-esque software or something, but I'm thinking about here that no 'programming genius' - I think she meant computer genius, really - would get Microsoft Office for anyone. They'd get an alternative. Mother: What about Open Office? You know ... [Son is not responding; I am getting a distinct 'I don't know what that is, which means my mother knows more about this than I do, but she just called me a programming genius and I do not want to look like an idiot so I'm going to keep my mouth shut' vibe from him] It's like Microsoft Office, but it's ... free? You know? [Still no response. Vibe from the mother says, 'I think I know what I'm talking about, but I'm not entirely sure, and my son is not responding, so maybe I'm making an idiot of myself here, but he's not being derisive or contradicting me, and I think I know what I'm talking about, so I shall plough on.'] Or Google Documents. We use that at work sometimes now ... you know? Son: [coming to a bit, with a distinct 'Thank god, I can contribute something I know, however small' vibe] Google Documents is good 'cause you can access it anywhere. Mother: Yeah. But maybe something like that? They packed up and left about then. I was so blown away and pleased to hear this middle-aged woman talking about Open Office to her son. I'm glad her workplace has a clue, even if her 'programming genius' kid doesn't. Yet. I hope he figures things out. My new machine is on its way to me. It has a 64-bit CPU, my first. The machine will serve as my run-of-the-mill, daily driver computer. Do I install 32-bit or 64-bit Ubuntu? That is, am I still looking for trouble if I install 64-bit? | | Friday, August 3rd, 2007 | 2:25 pm [adminbear]

OpenOffice and Thunderbird
I'm using Ubuntu 7.04 and Gnome. When Thunderbird is closed and I click the "document as email" button in OpenOffice, a compose message window opens in focus with the document attached. Yay! however when Thunderbird is already open the behavior is different. When Thunderbird id open and I click the "document as email" button, nothing appears happen. I leave Thunderbird open all day. This is my work computer. Is there any way to have a focused compose window open with the document attached when I click Open Office's"document as email" button if Thunderbird is already open? | 10:12 am [paintitmatt]

Thunderbird window not getting focus
This is nitpicky behavior, probably on Metacity's part, but I want a fix. I'm running Ubuntu 7.04 with Gnome. When I have Thunderbird open and click a mailto: link in Firefox, a copmose window opens behind the open Firefox window. That make no sense to me... When Thunderbird is closed, mailto: links open a focused compose window in front of Firefox, where I think they should be. I leave Thunderbird open all day, as I am constantly checking my email and want mailto: links to open a compose window in focus if Thunderbird is open. Is there an easy way to do this? X-posted, alot. |
