Curious Error
Earlier this evening, I went to open a folder, and had it abruptly disappear as I clicked on it. I was literally doing nothing more than double clicking on a folder in the file browser - and the only other program running was Firefox. I then went looking for it, and the folder did not go to the trash, the files that were in it can not be found through search, and the file I had just downloaded to that folder does not give me the ability to open it in Firefox's download window.

It was a personal folder and it'd been recently backed up, so restoring it isn't crucial. But I've been playing with a test folder and can't seem to reproduce the error, no matter what combination of buttons of I press on my mouse combined with any option I "accidentally" hit in the context menu. So I'm just wondering if anyone has any idea at all what might've happened, or how I can avoid it happening again.

No idea. Shift delete does that, but it's tricky to hit it accidentally. I hate to classify anything a fluke because those almost never happen in computers. But if you can't duplicate it, then it might have to be called that for now.

Aside: I know that firefox crashes a lot. Maybe it somehow got tied up in your folder? I don't think that's even possible normally, but you never know.

if you click at the same time with both mouse buttons on a folder, will that do it?

That button combination is usually set to close tabs in browsers and stuff of that nature, so maybe it's set in ubuntu to delete objects. I'm at work on a windoze machine, so I can't test right now, so hopefully this works for you.

it's a paste in ubuntu. At least it's supposed to be. it duplicates the center button. but i never thought about specially programmed mice options.

I've had that and couldn't replicate it - I had to restore the folder from a backup, because it genuinely had disappeared.
