VAGELOS SCHOLARS

  • Jun. 19th, 2009 at 1:50 PM
Is this program worth doing? Are the vagelos specific seminars harder to get good grades in? Is it really worth it in the end to graduate with a Masters, or is it a lot of unnecessary work and not much flexibility in picking classes you want?

bike

  • May. 16th, 2009 at 3:07 PM
Hey all, anyone (seniors come to mind) getting rid of a bike? Mine got hit by a car the other day (parked — I wasn't on it), so I need a new one.

I'm looking for something used that'll get me around for a year or so — preferably under $100, but I can go a little over that for the right bike. It'll need to fit a 5'6", average-sized chick, and it doesn't need to be pretty, just functional. I'm heading over to the Bike Church in a bit, and watching Craigslist, but I thought I'd see if anyone here might have any leads.

Thanks!

The Anvil Experience is coming to Philly on Friday at the Trocadero. For those of you who don't know, the Anvil Experience is where you get to see that new rock-doc called Anvil! The Story of Anvil (which has been called the real life This Is Spinal Tap) and then the band performs a short set immediately following. My friends saw this in NYC and said it was the best thing ever.

tickets are still available here.

Come see What You Will at Bristol Riverside Theatre!

Life is one big soap opera in Illyria - a country where everyone is very much in earnest, but also a little insane.  The social center of Illyria, Club 12th Night, marks the boundary between games and masquerades and the business of the workaday world, a place where pranks and disguises, playful games and folly rule.

A shipwrecked woman enters the fantastic Club 12th Night, beginning a chain of events that lead to an astonishing conclusion.  Mistaken identities, intrigue, music, a beautiful heiress, merry drunken revelers, and a spiteful servant merge with a hip–hop rhythm in Shakespeare’s enchanting tale of revelry and love. Hopeless romantics will be captivated and pranksters will discover the ultimate joke.

Directed by BRT's Artistic Director, Keith Baker and Donald Byrd, acclaimed Broadway choreographer (The Color Purple) and Artistic Director of Seattle's Spectrum Dance Theater.  Original hip-hop score by Justin Ellington.  Set and Costumes designed by Hiroshi Iwasaki, Lighting designed by Ryan O'Gara

Join the Impact

  • Nov. 10th, 2008 at 11:37 AM
Dear UPenn LJers,

I'm a Wharton undergraduate alumni (Class of 2006) living in Los Angeles, California. As you may have heard, California Proposition 8 narrowly passed in the recent general election, banning same-sex marriage in the state after a California Supreme Court decision legalized them some six months ago. Protests have sprung up around the state and have started springing up around the country.

A group called Join the Impact has begun organizing a NATIONAL protest to take place this Saturday, November 15th, at 1:30pm Eastern / 10:30am Pacific.

There is a list of cities that have started organizing protests on the website and I was pretty disappointed to see that, thus far, there is no protest being organized in Philadelphia.

Jackson, Mississippi has a protest being organized.

UPenn has an amazing LGBT-Allies community and, unless things have changed in the 2.5 years since I graduated, it's a liberal place (I fondly remember mass protests of the War in Iraq in the spring of my freshman year). In addition, Philadelphia at large has a great gay community to call on.

I'm calling on someone to get something started. I've been to protests every day since Wednesday night in Los Angeles. This is the civil rights issue of our generation, and these protests have collectively been the singularly most transformative experience of my life.

To paraphrase Martin Luther King, Jr, the ultimate tragedy is not the oppression and cruelty by the bad people but the silence over that by the good people.

Please don't be silent.

Thanks.

$815 - 1BR Apartment Close to Penn's Campus

  • Oct. 26th, 2008 at 7:26 PM
I currently live in a medium-sized apartment building on the edge of Penn's and USIP's campuses. It's a nice sized 1BR apartment, separate kitchen, and bedroom. Hardwood floors throughout and high ceilings. Hot water included in rent. I am moving out of the city, and looking to find someone who will fill out the rest of my lease (07/31/09). THIS IS NOT A SUBLET.

The 34 trolley stops right in the front of the building, and the building is easily accessible to Penn's and USIP's campuses, a few blocks from Clark Park and the Green Line Cafe, as well as the shops and restaurants on 40th Street. Most in the building are grad or med/vet students, and there is a laundry room in the basement, as well as a parking lot you can rent a space in (separate cost). Many closets and wall space for a long desk. This is a second-floor apartment with west-facing windows, but there is an elevator at the top of the entry stairs in case you have something heavy you are carrying.

The leasing company is great, and responds quickly to issues. The office is also across the street.

Since I am hoping to move out as soon as possible, please be in touch, and we can schedule a visit. My e-mail is my username at hotmail dot com . Thanks!

Last semester!

  • Oct. 22nd, 2008 at 4:22 PM
Hi everyone!

Seeing as how next semester will be my last one at Penn, I thought I'd ask---do people have recommendations for amazing classes/professors? I have a bunch of free electives left, so I'm trying to make the best of it.

Thanks in advance!

Katha Pollitt's speaking at Penn tomorrow.

  • Oct. 15th, 2008 at 12:42 PM
I've got dinner plans, so there's no guarantee I can get to see this, but maybe I can talk my friend into coming along:

This Thursday at Penn: "Gender, the Election, and Learning to Drive"
From the University of Pennsylvania's events calendar:
Gender and Politics: An Evening with Katha Pollitt
"Gender, the Election, and Learning to Drive." Katha Pollitt will be discussing her book "Learning to Drive," and issues regarding gender in the upcoming presidential election.
Date: Thursday, October 16, 2008, 5 p.m. to 6:30 p.m.
Location: Houston Hall 230-CL of 49 Aud

Okay, Pollitt's one of my favorite writers. She's one of the sharpest and most acute essayists going. Even when discussing a subject I know pretty well, she'll have something I hadn't thought of... and it'll be even better than what I'd thought of. She's witty, sharp, and grounded, and if you've got Thursday evening open you might want to attend.

Rooms to be available in my house

  • Sep. 18th, 2008 at 9:40 PM
Okay, during October, I'll have two rooms available in my house for rent. It's a shared house in Wewst Philadelphia/University City, with a shared first floor, laundry, kitchen, living room, etc. Cable TV (living room only), TiVo, and DSL is included in the deal, and utilities are included in the rent. You'd share a bathroom with one other person.

There's a fairly big room on the second floor, and a smaller room on the third floor. I'm asking $550 per month for the third floor room (available end of October), or $650 for the second floor room (available end of September). I'm also looking for a female for the third floor room, as the current housemate up there's a woman, and she'd feel more comfortable sharing the floor with a female.

Location is half a block from the Green Line on Baltimore Ave. Clark Park is a block away, it's real close to the trolley lines.

So, any restrictions? No pets, no smoking. That's basically it.

Mentoring Program

  • Sep. 16th, 2008 at 8:53 PM
HEY UNDERGRADS!

Apparently there is a lack of undergraduates participating for the Graduate/Undergraduate Mentoring program. I really encourage all you undergraduates out there to participate! The program pairs graduate students with undergraduates so that undergrads can learn about preparing for graduate school from someone who has already been through the system. There's probably a few things you guys can learn from us seeing as how we have already gone through the process of GREs, letters of recommendations, research experience, etc.

Currently, there are more graduate students than undergrads - you guys should take advantage of the program! It might be extremely beneficial for the seniors out there who are thinking about going to grad school next year. Of course it's also helpful for non-seniors who want to get a head start on what they should be doing to prepare for grad school.

So go and apply: http://www.gsc.upenn.edu/zurich/mentoring/tips.php

As a plus, you'll even be able to meet your grad student in the Graduate Student Center which has FREE COFFEE (or tea for you tea lovers out there). I'm posting because I'm a grad mentor but have no mentee. :( Or feel free to ask me any questions. My email is gchao at seas dot upenn dot edu.

Airport Transportation

  • Sep. 12th, 2008 at 12:33 AM
I'm coming back to school (after winter break of course) in January and my flight's ETA is 11:35PM. Is there any shuttle service (e.g. like Lady Liberty) that will pick you up from the airport and drop you off at your door that late? Other than a taxi of course. Something within the range of Lady Liberty (~$10).

I know Lady Liberty runs until 12-midnight. The problem is I have a layover flight which might get delayed and thus arriving later than expected at PHL when Lady Liberty isn't running. Any advice?

Hemming

  • Aug. 31st, 2008 at 11:14 PM
I need to hem one of my pants and I was wondering if anyone could recommend a good tailor shop or dry cleaning shop to go to. I looked some up through Google but the shops either had no reviews or really, really bad reviews. Any suggestions?

I'll be a freshman this fall and I just got my schedule... does anybody have any advice for these classes?

Math 104 with VanErp
Econ 001 with Stein
Spanish 140
and a writing seminar called Spectators, Voyeurs, and Witnesses with Baumli

Is Math 104 as bad as everybody makes it seem? I'm under the impression that it has a huge workload and is really difficult to pass.
