Students Beware: Vector Marketing/Cutco Knife Selling Scam
In case any of you didn't already know, this company advertises vague "Customer Service and sales" work in "housewares and sporting goods" with "no door-to-door or telemarketing" for over "$12/base-appt" all over the nation and it's main recruiting website is www.workforstudents.com

It turns out to be a kitchen knife selling scheme: after you pay about $150 for a demo set (that may be refundable) you are turned loose to sell these knife sets to your friends and family costing anywhere from $200-$2000 with a starting commission rate of 10%. Then you're supposed to ask them for the contact info of their friends and family and do the same. As reps are often misled about their job, they are also often misled abot the quality of the knives. You are hired as an independent contractor instead of an employee and that basically allows them to withhold pay for training, phone time, etc. There is a base pay per appt you don't sell at, as long as it is qualified by their standards (one-on-one done fully to someone over 25 with a job). They've admitted to fraud in settlements with the Australian Consumer and Competition Commission (1999), Wisconsin Consumer Protection Dept (1994), and Arizona Attorney General (1992). Wisconsin surveyed 940 Vector Marketing recruits in 1992 and found that almost half either earned nothing or lost money working for Vector and they earned less than $3 a day on average selling cutlery for Vector

Many sites and newspaper articles have have called Vector out for their scam:

Interesting... I knew someone who worked for them but he didn't seem to have a problem with it. Then again this was two to three years ago so eh.

i am actually a receptionist for this company and for those who feel they have been cheated, vector offers a full money back refund for the knives you must purchase for your demo. set if you decide to quit. also the reason training is not paid is because how many people do you think will attend this training and decide that it isn't the job for them? lots do. the trainings we run usually have 40-60 people in them. if the company paid every person for coming then they would have gone bankrupt a long time ago. it really isn't a scam and i am saying this as a receptionist. i don't sell nor do i plan to because i like what i do a lot. but i know a lot of info on this company and the product. don't hate just because it didn't work for you. i have witnessed people who come here broke and now make a lot of money. our top sales rep pulls in about 900 a week but she is extremely dedicated. you get out of it what you put into it.

You go thru 17hours and 30min. of training and don't get paid. in the interview they make it seem like you do. they say you get paid for the appointment training. not the first training you do. 10 people walked in for the interview and all 10 got the job. hmmm..... a little odd don't you think.

I was a receptionist at Vector for about a month or so. At first i thought it would be cool just answering phones and "receptionist things" like that. Well i was told i had to watch a training video. It was a 6 hour long video that pretty much taught me how to read of a screen. They trained me to obligate people to come in... like asking them to miss class or whatever just to make it in like its the most important thing ever. So i started and it was more or less telemarketing. My manager was some young guy... and a total ass hole (yes I'm talking about you CHRIS WIRSING!) We used to have to go through these long meetings where we would discuss the same shit every time. The internet apps. were never read... infact all that came up was the name, phone, address. If you missed an interview or missed our call for whatever reason we would have to keep calling until you answered. Some people had over 25 messages from us. We werent allowed to tell people anything about the job either. This place is totally pathetic. Those who say its great are probably people like my old manager chris wirsing who still hasnt given me my last check... fucking bastard!

Any company that has to beg for workers is a scam. If this job were so great and you could easily make a ton of money there would be students lining up out the door. Plus why be so vague about what the job is?

I totally agree, Vector is a scam. I was a high school senior(graduated last month on May 22, 2006)...I came across Vector on the classified ads and it promoted itself well. I called them, and immediately I was called down for an interview...they're that desperate for workers. I hated it, the manager kept pressuring me to make appointments. And we would have little competition to see who can get the most appointment by listing phone numbers of all the people we know. The thing is they called all my friends and offered them a job. Pathetic, they lure students into this trap by offering great pay, and my check was only $94.00 having sold $800 worth of knives within a week of their training. $94.00 is not so good considering the price of gas now a days. I mom wanted wanted me to quit within 4 days of the training, I should've have taken her advice.

Well it also makes sense to think of it this way. When your not doing door to door sales, or telemarketing, how in the heck are you going to sell anything? I know i just got a job offer from them today and I thought it seemed kind of strange. With a reputation as bad as theirs, now i have to try and convince my friend to work somewhere shall we say a little...safer.

Everyone gets hired....period...the only ones they don't hire are idiots or repulsive looking people and even then...they still hire you...Interview process, ha-ha....it is a brainwashing/make the interviewee feel good processing set up for the young college student who doesn't have the background and experience to know better...they tell you how great you will be and how much you can make because you are such a great person....in fact I bet you are manager material, come to this conference or meeting and you will be a manager next year, they become your best friend because you have not time for anything outside of the hours you have to to do or report in for....shame on them...but shame on anyone who can get on the internet and read what this marketing company does for Cutco and they still go to an "interview"....I agree Vector's Cutco product is excellent but their sales techniques are abusive to the young people they hire, they are after you to do their work and they will reap the benefits of your time, your gas money, your life that you can't live because you have to give up everything to make any money.....you spend your life doing for them and they make the money and you get pennies. They suck the life out of you, they encourage you to spend money to have greater potential....The fact is IT IS A PYRAMID!, it is like all of the other pyramid setups, Nikken, Herbalife, Amway Avon, MaryKay,Tupperware etc....doing this for a couple of months can work but when you run out of family and friends it is hit the phones and you might get 1 in 10 to say sure come by and show me your wares.....it comes down to that if you really like this type of work you can do it, you can make some money, but you have to commit to hours and months and you will get very little until you get enough people under you, that is the pyramid, you need many underneath you until you get to the level that the percentage paid to you is worth it ....(I know someone who did over 120 hours, yes 7a - 11p basically everyday, and ended up with an average pay of $2.00/hour after the few sales were made, not sure what her superiors made but that was her "huge amount of money for that many hours)
Why do they go after college kids...well the college kids are looking for quick jobs and quick money and guess what...... it.....doesnt happen that way...don't waste your time...if you can't find a hourly paying job, maybe you should volunteer with a non profit group...it doesn't give you money but it looks better on your resume and you will feel better.

Oh yes, be aware they will stroke your ego, you are the best, you have such great potential, you are ready to be a manager...help us out and you will advance.....also be aware that there are no benefits to being a "independent contractor for Vector as in no health insurance, no ability to submit expenses for car, gas, mileage, nada....so remember if you put in fulltime work for other companies they pay that....but not vector because you are an independent contractor for them.... it is all on you, the only money or benefits you will see is the percentage not given to the people who are above you on the pyramid who are sitting there watching you rack up the time and hours...sound like fun? Then go for it but remember there is not get rich quick out there, it comes down to good education and good work ethics...don't waste you time.

Let me find out ALL the NEGATIVE things about every company that I apply to first and believe EVERYthing that ANYone puts down on a blog. Yeah, Vector isn't for everyone, and not everyone succeeds, but that's no reason to rip on the company. I'm sorry for those who's had bad managers... But, some of you seriously need to move on instead of whinning about how you didn't make enough money. From: William L. Carsey III President/CEO WC3 Enterprise LLC and WC3 Computer & Repair Inc.

First of all your either one or the other you’re a branch manager for Vector Marketing and defending them or you are a Key Staff member ; So I don't want to hear this BS about how you are doing great because really you just trying to stop other people like us from reading this and applying it. Secondly I did work for Vector Marketing for 2 weeks and BS that it is easy to sell a $200 set of knifes to your family or friends. Listen knifes are not the only thing a person needs in life HELLO (FOOD, GAS MONEY, PAY RENT, CAR, KIDS TO SUPPORT, ECT) So drop that BS about it is easy yea I would really rather buy a set of knifes then pay rent this month my landlord will accept that as why I can’t afford rent this money BS I doubt that and if you think that then you have some real problems. Thirdly I own my own company did before I worked for Vector Marketing (and I told them that....) and still own my own company and I do a hell of a lot better selling computers to people then knifes, Because people will buy a computer and get millions of uses out of them including reading my message about you guys . (Now Cutco knifes are great but not that great to pay MAX. $899 for a set fuck that shit) now finally just do us all a favor and just shut the fuck up about how great this company is. P.S I offer paid training most company requires it by law you guys are the biggest scam since and before ENRON.
P.S.S I revised your grammar error

grammar errors and places (‘) in the wrong place, and you can’t spell basic words

Yes, I agree! It makes so much sense to not give students a heads up on what the job is. While we're at it, get students with no experience! They could be slackers, they could be anything. What does it matter? No experience? No problem! Promise the world and decieve along the way! Great business tactics! I wish I would have thought of it sooner!

I find it disappointing that a few bad eggs can give a bad name to a multi-million dollar company. Did anyone else notice it was the same few reporters articles that kept getting cited and only a handful of representatives are creating a fuss. I'm a District Manager in the Detroit area and I take great pride in the company I work for as well as the representatives I manage. I starting working with Vector back in 2001 when I was still a college student. I never was misled with anything. In fact every representative that is brought into the company first sits in a interview that takes 70-90 minutes explaining everything from the base pay to the sample kit security deposit to why the product is the best selling cutlery in the United States. I have personally sold around $116,000 worth of cutco myself, I made a great deal of money, built my resume, met amazing people, and experienced powerful personal growth.

I would like a knife expert to comment on the product because news reporters who claim the product is not up to par are not a credible source. I have seen customers that have had 40+ years who told me their knives were still sharp. The steel Cutco uses is the same steel used in surgical instruments, and the handles are made of thermo resin which can be found in bowling balls and motorcycle helmets. On top of everything the company backs the product with a FOREVER guarantee which states, in short, if anything dulls, rusts, breaks, melts, or needs sharpening the company with fix or replace the product FOR FREE.

Personally, I graduated college in 2004 and became a high school teacher. I did not feel I was supported properly by my colleagues, did not feel I was being properly compensated, and it caused many health issues. Chris Heigel, Michigan's Division Manager, let me know the door was still open and I chose to give up my "secure" teaching position and benefits to work again for Vector.

Any representatives I have trained would tell you they were more than compensated for the work efforts, they also would tell you that the meetings, training, and conferences we offer are voluntary, yet everyone would attend due to the amount of personal and professional growth as well as fun that took place. We give away college scholarships (I won one in the Summer of 2001) and help students earn internship credits. I am proud to share the Vector Opportunity with as many people as I can. It changed my life and I believe with every fiber of my being, it will change theirs!

In closing, there was a lot of negativity I could dig up on Vector, but you can find the same amount of bashing of tv shows like 'The Simpsons', musicians like Soulja Boy, and even that all Catholics, Jews, and Muslims are murderers. People will believe what they believe, I just hope their beliefs come from true knowledge and not the overreactions of a few bad eggs.

=] I totally agree with you! He's right, vector is amazing. I absolutely LOVE MY JOB!!!

I started in June 2007 right out of high school, and yes I will admit I was skeptical about it...But going to the interview and training was one of the best decisions I've ever made.

I'm 18 years old and in about 10 weeks of actual work I made, not sold, made, profit, money in my pocket even after taxes, $16,000. yes that's 5 digits!

And that is not to boast, but just to prove to you that the company is legit, and NOT a scam by any means. The ONLY reason why someone doesn't do well is because they don't follow the program they are taught.

And the company does not take your money, you have to put a security deposit down to use the knives, how else do you expect to sell them, plus they pay for themselves in your first weekend of work if you decide to keep them, by just following the program, honestly the best investment I've ever made.

Vector changed my life. I have grown professionally and personally in such a short time, plus I've met some of the most amazing genuine people.

And every business is going to have a bad egg or two, I just don't think its right to judge an entire company that gives opportunities to so many people, based on the FEW people that may not have done things properly. And to answer some of your questions, if vector was a scam that was screwing a bunch of young kids and is so public about it how would it still be in business? It wouldn't. So think about it..

You are, without a doubt, one of the branch managers and you're trying to save Vector's reputation; but sorry, it's already ruined. VECTOR IS NOT AMAZING!
I, too, filled out an application to work at Vector not knowing what it was because I needed a job. When I received a phone call from them literally a day later, I have to admit I was pretty excited.....(well, bad idea!)
....I went to the interview and like many people said already, almost everybody got hired. That should've triggered something in me but it didn't. I continued with the 3 day training (which by the way was HELL..TH 10 to 4/ Fri 10 to 4/ Sat 9 to 4) and it wasn't until the last day, when he gave us the "Sales Rep Agreement" to pay for the sample kit that I realize this was indeed a scam. (An advise to you all, always read the fine prints!) It was by reading the fine prints that realize that there was a base pay period; which means after a certain time, we'd be paid solely on commission (which he NEVER mentioned) I said Hell NO! then I made a decision to not pay the $144 he asked for, took a few people down with me and left.
I once lost $129 on one of those messes and i was not about to make the same mistake.
LISTEN PEOPLE...DO NOT i mean DO NOT work for these people.

Cutco crooks!

I worked for Vector selling cutco knives. I worked for them for 4 months, sold to my family and friends. I made only $400.00 in that time. I sold over $4000.00 in product. I am very upset with this company. They use people and exploit them for thier own gain. STAY AWAY FROM THEM. They would call me every morning very early and nag, who have you called yet. I wasn't even out of bed yet. They expect you to start calling at 7 am in the morning. The reason that the managers ride thier "staff" so hard is that they don't have to sell anymore because they can lay back and make money off of your sales.

You have to beg your family and friends for contact names and build your client base from that. Then build off people you don't know, that's where you run into even more problems. People you don't know really don't like giving out names and numbers of people they know. They are such a ripe off. I sold a knife that was dull in 3 days of recieving it. And when I called them to thave them send in a new knife they would not. They said that I must be mistaken. There is no way that could have happened. Oh no really that knife magically got dull in the box. PLEASE. So much for thier lifetime guartantee. Stay away from these people. They are crooks!

I was on craigsliat one night and stumbled upon Vector. The job description said customer service/sales no experience necessary $18.50/hour. It was vague but the 18.50/hour part really intregued me so i filled out an application online. 12 hours later I get a call from them offering me an interview that same day. I told the woman on the phone that my day was packed and i wouldnt have time to do it that day; specially since their office was an hour away from my house. But she wouldnt give up, telling me that positions are filling fast and so i had to cancel what i was doing that day to go to this interview at 6 pm (thinking about it now, who schedules interviews at 6 in the afternoon??)When I asked her what the job was about, all she would tell me is that is was marketing.
When I got there, there were about 15 people sitting down with clipboards waiting. about 10 more people walked in after i got there. So i waited about 15 to get my interview which lasted less than five, than she congratulated me for being "qualified" for part two of the interview. She told me it would be a few munites long. A few minutes?? I sat there (along with the other 30 or so people) for 90 minutes listening to her amazing stories about cutco and cutting pennies. After she finally shut up she told us to wait around so she could tell each one of us in private if we got the job. After another 20 minutes, she called me into her office and told me i got the job and training start tomorrow at 10 am.Then thats when she decided to tell me that its not by the hour, its by appointment. Thats when i started to get aggravated.
The training is 3 days long, 16 hours. They told us we didnt get paid for training but we were lucky that we didnt have to pay them (?!) We also didnt get a lunch break. Everything they told us was rediculous i didnt buy any of it. Make $3000 in a weekend??Yea, ok.They also said that after the 3rd day of trainnig there were was more training we had to go to. "Adcanved training" they call it. They never mentioned it before!
After my second day of training i was very uncomfortable and skeptic about this place, so i did some research and 80% of it was negative, so i never went back for my third day of training. They keep calling and emailing me asking me to go for my third training. Its so annoying. After reading all the articles and opinions i found online, Im glad i never gave them my money or any more of my time. STAY AWAY FROM VECTOR!!!

everyone here is so friggin right. i was training for 4 days and so were some of my friends. in my training there was a girl whose older brother supposedly worked for the company and he had paid for college and owned his own appartment and was only a month away from a paid off car, all at the age of 22. i brought her up to some of my friends who were doubting the whole opperation and while i was using her story to defend vector when they all said she was in their classes too!!! i have spoken to a lot of ppl and found out that vector is a complete scam from the $150 "refundable" payment for the samples of which i haven't heard of anyone getting back to the ppl they hire to make it look like it's an awsome company! this place wasted four days in which i could have been working and $150 of mine! if you or someone you know is about to pay them $150 and begin work STOP THEM NOW!!!!!!!!!

i worked for vector last summer 2007 and i was a receptionist in a ny office. and besides what everyone else has said about the general scams that cutco and vector marketing run i have an interesting tidbit for anyone who believes the good reviews about cutco/vector marketing. besides my training to become the most dishonest and naggy person possible over the phone i was taught to find online blogs and write amazing reviews about the company!!! i ended up leaving because they wanted me to start doing sales and when i said no they fired me! in-other-words and to quote my "ex"manager "if you're not dedicated enough to the company to invest a small amount of funds we dont need you that badly! but if thats so howcome i get calls from the office almost 12 times a day about how i need to come back in or how they can pay me more if i just give them 150 dollars. phat chance stay away from cutco they are a buch of chicken hawks who prey on kids who don't even know they are walking into an ambush

i totally agree that it is a scam. i hate all the pressure and calling them everytime to see if i made appt. and stuff. im tired of all the meetings we're supposed to attend then make all appt. on our own and do everything on our own. it sucks. im happy for people that succeeded over ther but i dont think its for me anymore. i was supposed to go to my adv. training 3 but i think i'll skip. i spend more money on gas driving to these trainings/meetings than actually making money

I heard about Cutco on Craigslist and I thought it was strange that nothing was listed about what I would be doing if hired. I went to the interview and felt skeptical but was so eager for a job that I pushed my intuition away. When I got home I realized that this job sounded too fishy. I looked this up online and was repulsed. I cannot believe that some people could honestly make a living ripping off young, niave college students off.

All I know is that something has to be done. There must be some loop holes making this scam legal but somehow we need to make a stand about this. This should be illegal.

There is actually a petion to be signed to stop the Vector/Cutco company on this website http://www.petitiononline.com/vector/petition.html. I encourage everyone that is concerned about this company to sign it.
