Flowers

Today a coworker of mine had a thought to send flowers to a random couple waiting in line at SF city hall.

He called a florist and they agreed to do it. He told them to deliver to any couple -- it didn't matter who -- standing in line to get married, with his blessing. The card will read simply "With love, from Minneapolis, Minnesota."

Once they understood, they were very touched and thought it was a great idea.

He told another co-worker who did the same thing. And now we want to start a movement. Wouldn't that be cool if people from all over the country, gay, straight and otherwise, started sending flowers to the people waiting in line to get married.

Call it The Big Gay Bouquet call it Flowers from the Heartland. Call it whatever you want, but help us get this off the ground.

Call Flowers on the Bay at 888-217-9119 and order a bouquet to be delivered tomorrow at noon.

And Tell all of your friends to do it.

Because straight or gay, we believe and we know many people who believe, support and celebrate the right to marriage. And we'd like to show it. We'd like to see all of the people standing in line with flowers of support from all over the country.

PS. Flowers on the Bay seems like a small shop and might get overwhelmed if this really did catch on. I have a feeling that any Bay-Area flower shop, perhaps even doing FTD through your local florist, could work.

EDIT!! Feb 20,2004: I wish I could personally take responsibility for this wonderful idea! You guys are all amazing. As it is, I got this msg from my friend ([info]gloein) who got it from her friend, Ben (who works with the original author of this msg--I believe). We decided that it would reach more people if we posted it in the communities that we belonged to. So, that's what we did. And, thanks to you guys, this has really taken off! Flowers by Al and Don have received more than $2000 for flowers--in the past day or so! This is a wonderful show of support!

Also to everyone who wanted to know if there would be media coverage: this will be in an upcomming issue of WIRED magazine!

What a great way to show our support. Thank you to everyone for sending flowers, posting the link/msg, and your kind words. What a wonderful thing this is! Let's keep it up! As long as they are in line, we should send flowers of support!

Feb 21: It made the media! The Minneapolis Star-Tribune: (Nothing says support like flowers from Minneapolis) and The San Fran Gate (The flowering of love Strangers from Midwest send bouquets).

Also, if you are looking for the website that is accepting paypal donations (for those of us who can't afford to send a $20-$50 bouquet), it's here: Flowers for Al and Don.

Feb 25: Here is another newspaper article about someone who received flowers in San Fran! Thanks to [info]kaela for pointing it out!

I found this through boing-boing, and have to agree that it is a fine thing to do...so I did. :) I tried a few other shops before calling Flowers on the Bay, and they weren't willing to deliver to a random person. *shrug*

Here's hoping the flowers get to someone that needs them.

Cheers from San Diego.

I just did it and passed this link around (thanks, Boing Boing); what a great idea!

When I called (12:30 PST), Flowers on the Bay said they had about 30 orders so far today. Their minimum is $35 with an $8.50 delivery fee, for a total of something like $47, which is a bit steep. If anyone knows of a shop that could do a single rose or something (especially since the delivery will be one-stop for many orders), it might be a good idea to post it here...

FYI from someone in/near SF:

"Elizabeth's Flowers (415-956-7430) will do it for about $30.

There's a guy right near City Hall (on Market and 9th) whose number I cannot find for the life of me, but if any savvy internet searcher manages to dig it up, I'm sure that would probably be the cheapest bet."

i live in San Francisco, and i think as soon as i can i'll go purchase a bouquet and hand-deliver it myself. i would urge other San Franciscans to do the same, and if we can work out the details, i would be happy to deliver flowers for other non-locals for just the price of the bouquet. :)

thank you for this excellent idea!

I was finally able to place my order today. I called and talked to one of the owners. He seems a little frazzled, but said that it's a wonderful idea. Additionally, he's had quite a few reporters calling to get information about all of this from him! Yay! It might just make it on the news!

Also, he said that the couples were absolutely thrilled to be getting bouquets from across the nation showing their support!

I live in SF near the Flowers by the Bay shop and was delighted to see you are using them. It's a small local shop. They do a wonderful job with even the simplest arrangement. And they have fresh flowers that last a long time.

I stopped by today and they told me they've had about 30 orders so far. They include a card with the order number and any info you wish to provide. You can also just offer to pay for part of an order.

The couples have been deeply touched by your generosity. Happy to share with all of you.

You can also try their website

Take a look at Derek Powzek's photos from this weekend

and consider sending a note to Mayor Gavin Newsom. I didn't even vote for the guy, but he made this all possible.
