The powers that be at Hasbro are redesigning the Monopoly board. That's an annoyance in and of itself, but there's greater shame afoot. They're conducting a vote for the great landmarks of selected US cities to use on the new board. Minneapolis is one of the cities.

The Mall of America is winning by a landslide. The other two candidates are The Stone Arch Bridge and Summit Avenue (actual landmarks).
Please go, vote early, vote often, and keep the Mall of America off the new Monopoly board.

Who are the ad wizards who came up with these pathetic landmarks?

My favorite Minneapolis landmarks are bars.

First Ave.
Matt's.
Lyle's.

Hell, the first avenue bathrooms alone should qualify.

"The powers that be at Hasbro are redesigning the Monopoly board."

You either didn't read the page carefully or you like playing the alarmist game.

They're creating a "Here and Now Edition", not redesigning the board. The new board is just going to be one of a multitude of the themed versions of the game.

I'm not trying to play any game. I thought it was pretty clear that my point was to urge people to go tip the vote in the direction of a landmark other than the Mall of America.

the only thing i can ever think of with the spoon bridge is that they have a camera trained on it to kick people off when they try to get it on atop it.

FASCISTS.

I agree. I think it's pretty petty to get worked up over this, anyway - they've made versions of this in the past. Considering millions of people visit the Mall of America every year, and they're planning a $1 billion expansion, I don't see why it's not important enough to Minnesota not to include it on some stupid square of a board game. Oh right, you (bohyne) don't like it.

I personally would prefer something else, but get serious; they're totally going to use the Mall. Besides, it's not like it's permenant, it's just a different version. If you're wedded to Park Place and Marvin Gardens, you can still buy the original one, too.

Could really care less about the game, but do you really consider the Mall of America to be of importance to Minnesota? The only important thing I can think of about the mall is that it does a great job of demonstrating just how skewed peoples' priorities can be. A Shopping Mall as a travel destination? At least in its early years it had some kind of out there stores, but these days really how many Claire's Boutiques to do you need in one building?

(Reply to this)(Parent)(Thread)

[info]so_long_apollo

Whether you think people's priorities are skewed or not does not change the fact that the Mall of America is a huge travel destination visited by millions of people every year and takes in millions (billions?) of dollars. From a strict financial standpoint, it is certainly much, much more important to the state of Minnesota than the Stone Arch Bridge AND Summit Avenue combined. How much tax revenue have those other two landmarks brought in, anyway?

That said, the game of Monopoly is all about capitalism anyway, so it seems to fit perfectly in my mind. I'm not defending the mall or mainstream America's priorities, but to write it off as irrelevent from a cultural or capitalist viewpoint seems pretty stupid. Ask anyone in the U.S. what they think of when they think of Minnesota, and I bet you the Mall of America is one of the top answers.

Just because you don't agree with that doesn't make it untrue.

I think you forget that the Stone Arch Bridge played an extremely important role in the economy of MN. My guess is that, adjusted for inflation, it's had a much larger impact that the MoA.

I think we can make this a Minneapolis vs. St. Paul debate by making sure NOT to vote for the Mall (in Bloomington) and voting for our respective city landmarks. ^_^

Heck, I'd rather vote for the Chain of Lakes myself, but as I'm from Minneapolis and there are only a few options....Stone Arch Bridge baby!

I love how poor, huge Alaska is hovering shamefully off to the left, and yet they didn't give it any landmarks to vote for.

Nyah, nyah Alaska: nobody loves you. Now you just stand there in your little pointy party hat outside the screen door and watch while everyone else (Phoenix!) gets to have cake.

If Minneapolis is the city they're talking about, then it's the Stone Arch Bridge by default. I'm willing to accept St. Paul as a suburb (no, it's a lovely city), but if aliens took Bloomington, I would cheer.
