looking for a good car mechanic
I'm looking for a decent car mechanic in the area (we live in the Seward neighborhood in Mpls) that won't charge me my firstborn child to fix my very newly wrecked car. looks like it's mostly the headlight and radiator that is completely destroyed, but i haven't crawled under yet.

Suggestions? I do NOT want to go to the dealership. screw that.

I would not recommend Len's Certicare on Riverside (might be called something else...it's like Riverside and 28th or so, past the ghetto Perkins). They really gouge people.

Sage's in Columbia Hts

It's a bit far but saves us so much $$ that it is worth it

My friends all swear by Sage's in Columbia Heights -- a little inconvenient, but apparently worth it. One caveat -- the shop (the office and waiting room) are heavy on the cigarette smoke. Or were, I don't know how the ban has affected the reality.

Saved me $500 when my serpentine chain broke

Saved me $400 on a complete tune-up

Saved me $500+ when the cooling fan melted to my radiator

Saved me $200 when the electric window controller thingy broke

All of those saved me more than the cost of a tow from S. MPLS to Columbia Heights

You could try Hawkin's at 4500 Nicollet. A little out of your way, but they are good and very honest. But if they say something needs to be fixed, do it. Once, they said I needed a new tire, and I thought I could wait. I had a blowout a couple of weeks later, and had to pay more for the tire elsewhere.
