| MN ID problem |
[18 Jul 2009|02:31pm] |
I discovered last night that Lone Tree Bar and Grill in downtown Minneapolis refuses to accept a MN State ID as a legitimate form of ID for a drink and will only take a MN Driver's license. They even have that posted in their entryway- it wasn't just some server making a dumb mistake. I have no idea how they handle out-of-town or international IDs, or what happens if someone has a disability that prevents them driving but not from wanting a god damn beer. The servers we talked to (no manager could be found) could give us a very good explanation for why they do this.
Can I get some advice on where to go with this to see if this policy is even legal (it's rather discriminatory), or what can be done to change it?
We all went next door and dropped a shit ton of money at Gluek's instead, so Lone Tree's loss I guess.

Here's a couple of questions for all of you hep cats out there in intertube land.
1. Where's the best place in the cities to purchase a shisha and supplies (tobacco, coal, etc)?
2. Do you need tickets to the Autumn Brew Review? We ended up purchasing 2 more tickets than needed. $60 bucks for the pair. Yes you save $3.48 versus purchasing them online! What a deal.
3. Well this isn't really a question, just a recommendation. We usually swear up and down that Origami is the best sushi in the cities but damn if we haven't been impressed with the rolls over at Mt. Fuji in Uptown. The prices are average for sushi around here and the staff have always been great. Do yourself a favor and order the Uptown roll. It's one of the best rolls I've ever eaten. Bonus, they deliver! (Also try Jade Asian Restaurant in the Midtown Global Market, not a huge selection but good sushi at a very reasonable price, especially during their happy hours.)

Pixies: "Debaser" |
] |
In a strange twist of fate, I now find myself facing many days with time to kill in that other city, Saint Paul. Where can I find a good coffee shop in which to whittle away my days reading and writing in peace? It need not actually be a very quiet location. Music is a plus, and in downtown is a double-plus.
TIA.

| good cobblers? |
[14 Jul 2009|08:10am] |
I have a pair of pretty cute pumps, and the actual heels are still intact on both, one of the "soles" (that little traction pad) has disappeared, so now there's just a metal nub. Is there a (preferably cheap) place that you guys know about where I can get replacement heel-bottoms?
I'm near the Mac-Groveland area, so nearby would be great, but anywhere in the cities is fine. =) Thanks!

| Used Book Stores? |
[14 Jul 2009|12:10am] |
I would like to expand my library so I'm looking for recommendations for used book stores that have good quality books, reasonable prices, and some sort of organizational system - I hate browsing through books that are just piled every which way. I'm mostly looking for fiction, but I might be going with a friend that is very into math and loves math books, so a selection of those would also be welcome.
Oh, and anything downtown or in the north suburbs would be great.
Thanks!

Where can I get a key copied in Uptown? Is the Ace on Nicollet the closest one? I have had some bad luck with keys there in the past.
Thanks

What dance instructors in Minneapolis or nearish would the fine folks of twin_cities recommend for a 4-left-footed lesbian couple who recently realized their first dance next month might look middle schoolish? Price is a big factor, as well as an ability to keep it simple. More general dance stuff, not so much ballroom.

| Twins Games |
[07 Jul 2009|06:24pm] |
Does anyone know of a bar with drink or food specials during the entire twins game? If so what are the specials?
Thanks for your information!
Edit: Looking for a something like a Summit or a Surly beer. I'd take a mixed drink if that is what you have.

| luxury hotel/resort within a few hours? |
[07 Jul 2009|09:33am] |
I'm looking for a luxury vacation spot within a few hours from here.
Requirements are:
1. really nice 2. outdoor pool 3. not overrun with kids 4. not in the twin cities or nearby, but within 2-3 hours.
Up north, I've been to the Grand Superior Lodge, and Blue Fin Bay, and neither have the kind of luxury hotel type vibe I'm looking for. They are more kind of north-woods-ish. I love knotty pine but I want like really nice beds and linens etc. Like you might find at like a W hotel or the like.
B&Bs would be an option but I want an outdoor pool too.
Thanks in advance.

| Sexuality and Socialism |
[06 Jul 2009|09:43pm] |
Hi everyone! I'm going to be giving this talk on Thursday at 7pm at May Day books over by Cedar Riverside. I've been active in the women's and LGBT rights movement most my life on Long Island NY and Oberlin OH and now Minneapolis. It's part of a larger campaign Socialist Alternative is doing in a coalition to get busses to the Washington DC protest in October as well as plan something locally. If you're more interested in that, there's a coalition planning meeting tomorrow night at 7pm! Thanks for reading.
While the capitalist system has led to the most severe economic crisis since the Great Depression and a series of devastating wars worldwide, those are not its only legacy. Homophobia, sexism and racism are a part of everyday reality for millions of people worldwide. Economic inequality feeds off of the social inequalities that capitalism deepens, and corporate politicians are all too often willing to sacrifice our rights for their narrow electoral interests.
Is there an alternative to the capitalist system? What would socialism mean for the lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender community?
Come to a discussion on how we can most effectively build the struggle for LGBT liberation, and the links between sexuality and socialism.

| Vegan Find - The Wienery |
[06 Jul 2009|04:32pm] |
A few months ago the girlfriend and me took a trip to Chicago and made an effort to find a Vegan hot dog that was Chicago style. We never found a place that was open, but when I was near the Cabooze I walked by the The Wienery and noticed that they have Vegan dogs and more for those that are unprepared to eat whatever they might put in those casings or even if you are they have plenty of meat options for you. I tried it out with my girlfriend a few weeks ago and we both gave it a thumbs up. As the city pages has done, I would put this on the best of list for a Twin Cities find.

| Traveling to/from Canada with a dog |
[06 Jul 2009|04:05pm] |
I hope this post doesn't violate the rules of this group.
In a couple of weeks I am driving from Minneapolis to outside Winnipeg with my dog. I found information about bringing the dog into Canada (proof of Rabies vaccine) but I'm curious about people's actual experiences at the border and also about coming back in to the US with a US-based dog.
Thanks in advance!

| Hoop-making workshop + beginning hoopclass open! |
[06 Jul 2009|11:42am] |
Hi. :) I love that some of you have come up to say hi to me out and about in the Twin Cities.
I'm having a collapsible-hoop-making workshop this upcoming Sunday, followed by a beginning hoopclass. Hooping has gotten so popular that I can hardly keep up with hoop-making! It's a fantastic deal, and space is limited, so don't delay if you are interested. Details here: http://harmonyhoops.com/classes.htm
Hooping makes me feel good. That's why I do it. And I'd like to make my city a happier, more positive place. That's why I share it. <3

| Help paying COBRA premiums |
[06 Jul 2009|10:18am] |
Did you know that if you've lost your job and are eligible for COBRA coverage the federal and state governments may help you pay for it? It's true! As part of the stimulus bill passed earlier this year, the feds agreed to pay 65% of COBRA premiums for certain laid off workers. Subsequently, the MN legislature passed a bill saying we'd pay for the other 35% for people who qualify! Why? Because it would be more expensive for us to enroll these people in our public health care programs, so all in all it's a cost savings.
Want to find out if you qualify? Go to the Minnesota COBRA Premium Subsidy information page on the Minnesota Department of Human Services website.
Brought to you by your friendly neighborhood public servant :)
